The trolley problem: your imagination versus the even sadder reality. (Just got this from a friend who also collects trolley problem variants.)

Let me (re)introduce myself! My name is Ionica. I am a professor of science communication in Leiden where I study and teach .

I moved from social to mathstodon, looking for a smaller local community (and you have the best t-shirt). I did my PhD on number theory and most of the science communication I do is still related to mathematics.

My posts will be mostly in Dutch, but work-related things will be in English (hope that is okay)!

This Thursday I will speak at a conference in this spectacular shark venue and I keep thinking this offers great possibilities for dealing with people who say 'This is more of a comment than a question'.

“There are two ways to do great mathematics. The first is to be smarter than everybody else. The second way is to be stupider than everybody else — but persistent.”

To celebrate being on this lovely server for a year, I set up a monthly support payment to Mathstodon. Slightly bummed out that I did not score number 1729, but let this be an encouragement to others!

And many thanks to @christianp and @ColinTheMathmo for all their work on running things smoothly here!

Did you notice that research is more prominent in the media than research on ? Why is this the case?

This question sparked the first publication of Aike Vonk's PhD project with her advisors Erik van Sebille and Mark Bos - and it was my pleasure to join their team.

Our study shows that research organisations communicate about ocean plastic research with more elaborate framing, compared to ocean climate change research. Press releases on ocean plastic research more often contextualized the research by addressing problems, identifying causes, proposing solutions, and providing moral evaluations.

In addition, we found that narratives were mainly employed to humanize science and portray scientists, rather than to emphasize the social dimensions of ocean issues.

The study appeared today in the Journal of Science Communication. If you are interested in this project or want to know more, you can always contact Aike by e-mail (a.n.vonk@uu.nl).

Next week the winner of the Abel Prize will be announced. As every year I organize an Abel Prize Toto where you can predict the winner and win a nice book. Replies are welcome below. If nobody picks a correct name, I will give the book to the entry that is closest to the winner

(and as every year, I get to decide the metric for 'closest' :qed: )
