[serious, no joke replies or guesses / autotranslation please]

do I know anyone native or otherwise very fluent in Chinese who can tell me the correct term for a plated edge connector, like you might find on a PCIe card? specifically the "gold fingers" style connector feature you would find on the PCB side, not the plastic connector it slots into.

I've had an absolute nightmare trying to communicate this feature to a Shenzhen-based PCB vendor and I would like it to be easier in future.

@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@gsuberland I often look at the English Wikipedia and then select link to another language there to find often the right terminology. However, this assumes that one knows the target language at least a bit.

My annual plea for a thing: I want a type 1 hypervisor that just has a small isolated VM and then passes through the rest of the hardware to the main VM which runs Linux. The small VM is intended to be used to run small pieces of code that the main OS should not be able to interfere with. Does such a thing exist? (Think Xen, but with a Dom0 that can't see into DomUs)

Recently places like @SIDN (Dutch national operator of .NL) have been claiming that nobody in Europe can deliver their computer needs, and that they are therefore forced to outsource operations to American cloud providers. Meanwhile our own IT industry denies this. Here I delve into what's going on, and how Europe is being Cloud Naïve instead of Cloud Native.

https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/cloud-naive-europe-and-the-megascaler/

jornfranke,
@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@bert_hubert @SIDN Kubernetes is nowhere offered reliable and solid (also not in American cloud providers). Kubernetes is a poorly written and designed platform full of issues - they even say this on their on website (https://research.nccgroup.com/2023/04/17/public-report-kubernetes-1-24-security-audit/). It has only niche cases and for the majority of the use cases there are better, more lean and more cost-efficient (in terms of efforts and infrastructure) solutions. Kubernetes is also not cloud native (it does not even know AZs or regions!).

jornfranke,
@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@bert_hubert @SIDN Many people claim this - who would admit a fault that they use "fancy" technology that is not useful? I would ask for their KPIs. They will have higher personnel cost, more complexity, less security, less achieved, a lot of Kubernetes clusters are mostly idle and waste energy, a zoo of Kubernetes cluster as Kubernetes is not good in isolating things etc., it is the wrong abstraction for most problems.

@meneer @Tutanota I would use a pre-quantum (e.g. EC) and post-quantum (e.g. KYBER) at the same time. The math behind KYBER Is rather new and other algorithms in the NIST competition have been cracked (rather late in the process!) in a couple of hours on classical hardware.

Does anyone working in Germany as a normal employee take a little cash on the side (legally) for stuff like giving talks, reviewing books, writing articles or other comparable stuff?

I'm happy in my job and want to keep it, but some little opportunities may come up where I could earn something, currently I'm opting out or doing it for free because of the whole tax thing.

I'm trying to figure out whether I can do a Nebenjob freiberuflich, or something. The whole system terrifies me, haha! Help?

jornfranke,
@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@sarajw You should not be terrified. Generally you should inform your employer about it. Then you can ask for advise to a tax accountant (should not be expensive) and your insurance (I would not expect that you need to pay much / sth at all). It can be under certain circumstances tax and social cost free (e.g. Übungsleiterpauschale: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%9Cbungsleiterpauschale or Ehrenamtspauschale: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aufwandsentsch%C3%A4digung_(Deutschland)#Ehrenamtspauschale#Ehrenamtspauschale)). This is mostly if you do it for public universities/schools or non-profits (gemeinnützig).

jornfranke,
@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@sarajw Best to ask a tax accountant - you need to only ask once and it is not so super expensive.

Yes, it did. Around V4.x. And it was a wonderful time. (I was a certified Lotus Notes Admin and Dev at the time) All patents on their sync approach should have expired by now, maybe it's time to bring it back as Open Source?

@jwildeboer You may look at forgejo federation (for Git/Activity Pub): https://forgejo.org/2023-01-10-answering-forgejo-federation-questions/ , e.g. Codeberg.org will support soonish after its available. Gitlab will support it as well (https://gitlab.com/groups/gitlab-org/-/epics/11247 and https://docs.gitlab.com/ee/development/activitypub/).

Still looking for reasons to learn Docker?

Source: Github Blog

jornfranke,
@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@ramikrispin Unfortunately, the security of those is often bad (overly permissive, bad security configuration etc.) and the people using them have also no clue how to run them securely ( without privileges, https://rootlesscontaine.rs/ e.g. with ). Here from 2017 (and it got now MUCH worse): https://dl.acm.org/doi/abs/10.1145/3029806.3029832 . See also: https://computer.rip/2023-11-25-the-curse-of-docker.html

It is often better not to use it than to use it insecurely.

The Microsoft AI research division accidentally leaked dozens of terabytes of sensitive data while contributing open-source AI learning models to a public GitHub repository.

jornfranke,
@jornfranke@mastodon.online avatar

@BleepingComputer many people also published "just" their trained model on huggingface and alike - not knowing that you can easily recover training data (often confidential) from any ML model by just asking it a few prediction and by looking at the input/output layer mapping of a neural network (some of them make it even extra easy by using Python pickle - in those cases the training data including the pipeline can be simply unpickled)

Introducing Masto Reader. Like Thread Reader App, but for Mastodon.

How does it work? Mention @mastoreaderio(@mastodon.social) anywhere in a thread and say "unroll" and the little bot will do the rest.

Here's an example (that takes a bit to load for reasons)

https://mastoreader.io/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmastodon.gamedev.place%2F%40badlogic%2F111071396799790275

You can share those links with others.

Links to the crappy source code can be found in the bot's profile.

Everything runs in your browser. The server doesn't log anything either.

Enjoy and spread the word.
