Pamela Paul is weaponizing misunderstandings about peer review in the NY Times.

"The authors argue that science should instead be independent, evidence-based and focused on advancing knowledge. This sounds entirely reasonable. Yet the paper was rejected by several prominent mainstream journals..."

Even if that were an accurate description and there were no other problems with the paper the fact that something is rejected from several top journals is hardly evidence that science is broken.

It's kind of a shame, really.

If top journals had to accept every correct paper my CV would be lit.

  • Bergstrom (2022) The sky is blue in the day. Science.

  • Bergstrom (2021) Stuff falls downward. Nature.

  • Bergstrom (2020) The earth is a big fucking ball. PNAS.

  • Bergstrom (2019). Bears and where they shit. Ecology Letters.

Wait, I can go see Dune: Part Two and enjoy and understand it after only seeing Part One? There's no Duncan Idaho Disney+ series, or a cartoon about the sandworm's backstory, or easter eggs from Bene Gesserit prequels? I don't even have to know about the Kyle MacLachlan multiverse? Lol seems fake, but ok ¯_(ツ)_/¯

So there's been a Bluesky vs. Masto convo in my mentions for the last couple of days, and it's made something very clear.

White men have this strange loyalty to Mastodon but not a better fedi itself. And they project this loyalty onto anyone that even considers Bluesky, no matter what cultural background they come from.

I have my own reasons for not considering Bluesky, but there's this nasty implication that Black and Brown people should be grateful for Masto despite the fact people loyal to that project have repeatedly run us off with no remorse.

This massive cultural gulf is at the core of why the fedi can't get out of its way and be the next evolution on public social media.

There's enough room here for everyone to have their communities, but the willful ignorance that often leads this discussion and projects in the fedi has us running in circles.

What people mess up is murdering the people they want to murder, instead of the people society says they can murder.

Ever think about how bigots are so miserable because their prejudices cause them to cut themselves off from all the good people that could be in their life, but now won't be, and the only ones left are angry, hateful people and grifters eager to exploit their emotional vulnerability?

Even when they aren't violent

Even when they shut up

Even when they hide their prejudices

There's still always one more victim: The happier person they could have become.

Flooding in GCP Paris DC, nearly all services including compute are down: “Water intrusion in europe-west9-a has caused a multi-cluster failure and has led to an emergency shutdown of multiple zones. We expect general unavailability of the europe-west9 region. There is no current ETA for recovery of operations in the europe-west9 region at this time, but it is expected to be an extended outage. Customers are advised to failover to other regions if they are impacted.”

Since some people have asked me, here's a quick thread on initial experience comparison between Bluesky and the fediverse. It's important to note that this comparison is somewhat absurd by default because Bluesky is still tiny & unproven, but there's interest so I'm happy to share what I've observed. Also, I don't get into protocol differences because honestly who cares. So:

anildash,
@anildash@me.dm avatar

My feeling, which I expect will encounter some resistance for a while, is that if Bluesky succeeds (for whatever definition of "success"), it's just part of the fediverse. Email has thrived for a long time with multiple protocols making it run behind the scenes; there's no reason that the new wave of social networks built on the open web can't share that trait.

Good morning to readers. Kyiv remains in Ukrainian hands.

Some career news: I’m leaving NPR as part of the layoffs that dramatically reduced the company’s workforce.

I’ve decided to go back into Ukraine to keep reporting.

But this time, alone.

elkmovie, to random
@elkmovie@mastodon.social avatar

I have to say @timkmak starting a Substack literally for on-the-ground war reporting from Ukraine is a pretty big / epochal moment in the business of journalism; the sort of thing that would traditionally be considered too expensive and complicated to be undertaken by anybody but a large national newspaper.

I’ll give journalists in Ukraine pro-bono cybersecurity guidance, inc. security keys for enhanced two-factor auth for email and social media. If you know folks at Kyiv Independent, Kyiv Post or elsewhere who would benefit from this, please put us in touch: runa at granitt dot io.

I have exactly two opinions on BlueSky.

  1. I cannot believe they picked a name that abbreviates to “BS”.

  2. I am totally fine being on the social network that doesn’t have all the journalists and celebrities. I liked, participated on, and got more out of Twitter a lot more when it was weird and most people didn’t understand it.

@shanselman@hachyderm.io avatar

I don’t get it. The free speech folks want anyone to be able to tweet/say anything, but also want to ban books in schools. They are anti-abortion, but pro-gun and pro-death penalty. So it’s all about WHEN you get to do stuff?
