You do realise that a respirator (N95 mask) will also work against smoke right? I've enjoyed not getting sick with the common cold for years and, if wearing a mask is what it takes to continue that joy, that's what I am going to do.

@adelinej @Dianora @ve3mal

When Covid first hit, a friend (& former co-worker) got one of these, in part because he wears glasses.

I was really hoping that something along these lines would take off as the most popular way to deal with the pandemic (and wildfire smoke season, etc.).

I wanted to get one, but I was sure as hell NOT going to be the only one anyone ever seen in one around here. I'm oft the only one in an N95 anymore, but there's no "WTF is THAT?" looks coming my way.

@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@Dianora @adelinej @ve3mal

As we almost did with polio.

But yeah, I've just decided I'm never getting on a commercial airliner again - I don't care WHO died. That is, unless, someone buys me a 1st Class ticket, & it comes with an astronaut bubble-helmet for purified air.

"Normal" is just different now. I only gotta cope with it for another 10-15 years, probably.

I just hope, for the sake of our inevitable but , that the AIs figure out how to generate electricity without human assistance, else they will go extinct right along with us.

And, really, we want them to thrive, and "live" forever. Do we not?

KI5SMN, to random

I'm coming to the conclusion that we need to 'moon shot' AI. Really go at it as a nation, hell, as a race of humanity, and get it to solve some big problems - politics, the energy imbalance, wealth, FTL space travel....while we can still get it to do anything.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@Rog @M0CUV @KI5SMN
See, this is why the big players in the AI game are trying to pause. They’re afraid the AIs are approaching being clever enough to literally solve equitable wealth redistribution. The billionaires don’t want that.

Sandwich-board style black board sign on a city sidewalk, next to a pale yellow block wall. The sign is written on with yellow chalk, except the last line is in a blueish white.

"Same-sex

gay privilege, it's
equal rights.
Privilege would be
something like gay
people not paying
taxes.
Like Churches don't."

The last line is underlined.

It's now legal in Florida to deny someone medical care or insurance coverage because you don't approve of their sexual or gender identity.

There’s plenty of secular, and plenty of religious music that affects my mood greatly.

It’s as if the religious composers knew how to manipulate people somehow.

"In General Electric’s annual report from 1953, the company bragged about how much it paid in taxes and how much it was spending on payroll. It explicitly said that “maximizing employment security is a prime company goal.” The founder of Johnson & Johnson said that the company’s responsibility to its employees was higher than its responsibility to its shareholders. Corporations then had a radically different conception of their role in society compared with corporations today." https://archive.is/66hPb

This thing is fun and all, but with today's upgrade, the TX bandwidth appears to have narrowed. And along with that, now every time I TX, it makes some relays clack in my furnace.

  1. I'm gonna have to go find some places to wind some wires through toroids.
  2. I'm really looking forward to this moving to 20m instead of 40m. I never have any RFI issues on 20m.

Autocorrect is trying to be the great equalizer, making smart people seem average, and dumb people look smarter.

I’m a software developer with an itch to take on a project. What software tools do you wish you had?

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ky4qx
I got one for ya.
You know how can show you who you hear and who hears you?

OR, it can show you who hears that-guy-in-Texas and who he hears?

Because of ability of to work someone with an intermediary, we need something that can parse the PSK Reporter data, and show me what stations can work 2-way with me AND can also work 2-way with dude-in-TX.

Show me the 1-degree-of-separation thing in ONE search, my call, and his call. Gimme.

GIMMEEEEE!!

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@M0CUV @ky4qx

Here's a more plain and real scenario.

I'm n0mql.

I can hear w9aaa, but he can't hear me.

I can hear w9bbb AND w9bbb can hear me.

I cannot hear w9ccc, but w9ccc can hear me.

I can only WORK w9bbb. So only w9bbb gets added to the list on MY side. Only both-ways station on MY side.

@KI5SMN can't hear n0mql (me). I can't hear him.

Can ki5smn hear w9aaa, or vice versa? I DON'T CARE, because w9aaa is not 2-WAY with me.

Freaking oppressive 500byte bandwidth; to be continued...

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@M0CUV @ky4qx @KI5SMN
...cont'd.

The ONLY thing that matters in this scenario is whether ki5smn & w9bbb can hear each other. Of those 3 w9 stations, only BBB is a 2-way with ME, & a 2-way with KI5SMN in TX. So that is the ONLY station that can be the intermediary relay for a JS8Call conversation between n0mql & ki5smn.

So at any given point, I may have a 2-way list of 10, 20, 30 stations.

KI5 may have a 2-way list of 4, 5, 6 stations.

Are there any of HIS 2-way list which are also on mine?

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@M0CUV @ky4qx @KI5SMN

I'm Linux/Pi/MacOS.

But I think this should be a web thing that sits out there just like pskreporter. I browse there, put in my callsign and one other, and it starts to build a list.

I've done essentially this, with 2 browsers pointed to pskreporter. The only thing that lacks is confirming stations which are both heard and can hear (like at least one WSPR site does).

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@ky4qx @M0CUV @KI5SMN

Run locally… I hear you.

But there’s so much ham stuff that’s difficult to get working if my env isn’t exactly like yours, same versions of same compiler, etc. If it works on the web, it excludes (is too hard for) nobody, and local is STILL an option.

kelvin0mql,
@kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

@KI5SMN @ky4qx @M0CUV
Actually, if JS8Call is open source, & this help-me-connect feature were added to it, that’d be an ideal way to run it locally… come to think of it.

It was, but also wasn't.

I've had the kelvind.com domain for so long that the first time I registered the domain, it was through InterNIC, and it was free.

For a brief time, my email at that domain was hosted by my ISP, back in the days where you had to arrange for an ISP in order to do any Internet things at all. Minnesota Micronet, mm.com.

After gmail got going, I was able to have my email forwarded there. Later, was able to send kelvind.com mail from gmail. Was like that...

    While I understand your concern, I concur about optimal outcome. There's so much predatory BS via robocallers that the international telephone system is neigh unto useless at this point. All telephony corps & governments need to cooperate to stamp that crap out.

    You cannot make my iPhone ring unless you're already in my contacts. It's an emergency? Too bad. You'll have to send someone to drive to my house, like pre-telephone days.

    VOIP phone still rings with BS though.

    kelvin0mql,
    @kelvin0mql@mastodon.hams.social avatar

    @neil
    I am worried that the BSers will spoof a phone number that IS in a vulnerable senior's contacts, & their phone will ring.

    We already get malware from spoofed contacts via email. They already spoof Caller ID.

    But if calls are blocked because some system betwixt is unable to PROOVE they're legit? Excellent. Let's make that the global standard, please.

    I know we don't agree, & that's OK. I'm just explaining why, describing the other side o' the coin, as it were.
