Well, we ended up making an offer on a flat. It’s a duplex on the top floors of an 18 story building, with a parking spot, the main bedroom and bathroom on the top floor, 2 more rooms on the bottom floor, and a nice big sundeck with an amazing view.

In the end, we’d rather have a really cool flat than a « meh » house! It’s on the higher range of our budget, but by the end of the week, we should have confirmation it’s ours, meaning you might see a new studio in 4 months or so!

Just moved some files from one drive to another at 2,400X speed!

@mrpablington for our shared game the BF and I are continuing - since I beat the the original im not sure what my next solo game should be. If I continue with Zelda I might skip Link's Adventure. If I'm being smart, I'd pick up where I left off in but I'm also tempted to dig my backlog hole a bit deeper and order

It took a few decades but I finally beat the original ! I used a guide & the save state feature of the which I don't regret at all. Every failed attempt in the past has been the same, I'd get to a point where I can't find anything to do next. Having beat it with a guide I can say I would have NEVER been able to beat it blind & honestly don't know how anyone does.

Video coming soon, but I wasn’t expecting it to be this usable already!

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@thelinuxEXP thanks for making the video. It’s encouraging to see that this is possible despite zero help from apple, but it’s also discouraging to think that we are still so limited in choices for desktop arm outside of Mac OS. I have a Samsung Galaxy Go & Linux is even less of an option there than on my arm Macs. Windows is so disappointing on Arm that I’d say arm chromebooks are the second best to Mac OS. In my Galaxy Book chrome or even android would be so much more usable.

Doh! I grew up in and somebody just pointed out to me (today) that "Deseret" means "honeybee" (from the Book of Mormon -- the religious book, not the Broadway play). 🤷

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@ai6yr Utah has its share of reused names from New York (boy did ppl like naming places after places), a city or two named to gain favor in DC (see Utah’s struggle for statehood) and TONS of conlang stuff like Deseret, Kolob etc. Sometimes it feels like living in a sparsely populated religious theme park.

So, I just made some fudge from a recipe that says to chill it once poured into a greased pan.

Given feedback on the fridge video... do y'all just never ever do that in Europe? Because, yeah, the little red fridge would not handle that well at all but I got a lot of folks being like "well, duh, you just don't put warm things in the fridge, everybody knows that" in the comments.

We don't know that because - get this - our fridges can usually just handle it!

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@TechConnectify I put warm things in my fridge frequently and without any really obvious problems. From my food handlers permit I recall ice baths as the step before putting warm things like soup in the fridge to minimize their time in the “danger zone”. Perhaps an ice bath would be a good idea for a fridge that can’t handle a large warm item?

Leaving for a long overdue early tomorrow so any posting will likely be images over 9 days in southern .

We’ve been married for nearly 15 years but never took a honeymoon, so this is sorta it now that we’re empty nesters. The schedule is relatively fluid, taking it day by day, with St. George as our “base camp”. The entire trip is inspired by this amazing video as we enjoy hiking & haven’t been to Utah yet.

Be well and live each day to to its fullest! ✌🏼

@kevinctofel I’ve made this drive about 14 times so far this year. I always appreciate the beauty and can say it’s worth revisiting since each season, each type of weather and each time of day shows it in very different ways. I’m told the drive to St George “the back way” north of Mesquite is also very beautiful and I look forward to trying that out soon.

If nothing else, Mastodon seems to be pretty convincing evidence that an edit button can work. I'm not seeing many cases of it being abused the way many worried it would be.

Bad actors are the problem, not the tools. Get rid of the bad faith people, and we can have nice things.

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@mattblaze and edit feature with git style history / diff seems pretty low risk to me. Especially if masto clients made it very clear when a post has been edited

This week, we have more details about @system76 Cosmic desktop, with a lot of customization for their panels, we have going full FOSS for their firmware, and some interesting changes in the defaults for @kde Plasma 6!

Hear me out:
Imagine you work on software projects that are often measured in years. Imagine that your developers rarely get to re-visit apps once they’ve launched. Imagine your large fleet of apps have all been written in Framework. Now, imagine you are evaluating the possibility of moving from framework to .net7 or the upcoming 8 and your managers ask about support. 7? 18 months from release so support ends 1 year from now. 8? 3 years. Framework 4.x? For the foreseeable future. 1/2

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

Your managers response:
If we start a project today & it takes a year to finish - if we go 7 we’d launch without support, if the timing somehow worked out perfectly & we start on dotnet 8 launch day we’d launch w/just 2 yrs of support but if we stick with framework (which we already know & already have to support) we get support for the foreseeable future? Support alone seems like a deciding factor to stick with what we already do.
I can’t honestly blame this “imaginary” manager. 2/2

👋 Hey folks. Do you feel like there are any gaps in the ecosystem when it comes to solving your issues and developing solutions? If so, what are they?

Please boost for reach :)

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh working somewhere with a HUGE library of .net FRAMEWORK apps and just starting what is likely to be a very long transition- it would be immensely useful if .net core apps could easily consume configuration info from machine.config. Right now I can’t even deploy anything that requires connection strings in .net core because on our servers they only live one place - the encrypted machine.config.

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh something along these lines is what I had assumed I’d need to do. Like in .net core apps have a setting that’s a list of settings that come from machine.config - use an adapter or proxy pattern around the settings classes then talk to a .netFramrwork lib (somehow) when a legacy setting is requested. Once a setting lives in a natively accessible place (json file/environment variable) remove it from the legacy list. It’s the somehow part I don’t want to deal with.

Question for any devs: Is a viable desktop solution on ?

I would really like to use it to create cross-platform desktop apps, but everything seems to mention windows/mac/mobile and Linux is generally missing, despite being .NET core based.

It seems a great solution but I just need a suitable resource to bring it together. C#, .NET core and is already a great experience on Linux, and I just need UI now.

@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh Very nice!

lewgrant,
@lewgrant@ohai.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh I like yous a lot better, the OSKB I built is buggy (if using an actual KB it's hard to get it to submit, tapping on the OSKB in iOS can cause screen to flicker/jump). In mine there are two word lists, 1st is for all valid words (to validate guesses) 2nd is common words used to pick the 'answers' from. ('zouks' is never the answer but allowed as a guess)
