Reread A psalm for the wild-built - still lovely 😊 did anyone else get the vibe that mosscap (and the robots in general) could be read as neurodivergent?

Updated the articles on (in german and english) with this great picture by commando jugendstil (are they here?) and @alxd (CC-BY-SA) https://alxd.org/nudne-science-fiction-uratuje-swiat-pl.html#nudne-science-fiction-uratuje-swiat

Before, the articles mainly had skyscrapers with shrubs on them and pictures of the singapore gardens, which, you know, look solarpunk but don't quite carry the spirit as much as this one does.

Uraael, to StarTrek

Star Trek. Saw a comment somewhere else griping (sigh) about the 31st century ships all looking different from each other. Fair enough, you do you.

But that made me think. If it's the "United Federation of Planets", why are Starfleet ships all using that one basic human design template they've been using for hundeds of years? Can they not afford to paint their ships, even? No Vulcan designed ships in Starfleet? Disparate crews (kind of, a LOT of Tokenism going on) but they're built on Mars, at Starfleet headquarters, in Earth orbit etc. That feels...disproportionate.

@lex@floe.earth avatar

@Uraael

true! And it doesn't stop there.
Almost all the admirals and captains we get to see are human; both Starfleet Headquarters and the Academy are on Earth...

it's really just tokenism, as you said. It gets a bit better with discovery, though.

The most punk thing about is how people will hate anything in the genre that's successful in mainstream. 🙃

Is there any way to bulk-edit my home timeline in ?

For example, mute multiple people at once, or look at all the hashtags I follow?

I often find my home timeline overwhelming, but curating it feels really tedious...

still dominant, although I read quite a few novels I liked despite being rather dystopian lately.

Added the category -adjacent for stories that have elements, but don't quite fit the genre, and ditched the category realism because who am I to judge that.

Other than that, there's also , and and a generic category, including and general

Also, compiling this has raised a question for me: Do you think a story can be when the state of planet earth is still bad or unclear?

i.e. sustainable, posthierarchical communities in spaceships or colonies, with great ideas for tech, democracy tools, ways of life?

They do a lot for my optimism, but it still bothers me on a certain level 🤔

serious question: why do many (most?) people share 2 grammatical versions of their pronouns, like he/him, she/her, they/them?

Why choose these arbitrary ones, instead of only the first one, trusting people know how to decline them? Or use all declensions like he, his, him or they, their, them?

genuinely curious how this developed, since I was kind of late to the pronoun party.

Hypothesis: has four core ingredients (must-haves):

🔧A benign (yet critical) perspective on the helpfulness of technology.

✊A fierce egalitarianism, rejecting systems of oppression like (among others) capitalism, racism, sexism.

🕶A hopeful (but not naive!) outlook on the future of humanity.

🌍A strong determination to achieve a human lifestyle within planetary boundaries.

Would you agree?
Did I miss any?
Or would you argue that one of them is not essential for solarpunk?

Can we make a collection of images licensed as creative commons?

Search Engines don't come up with a whole lot, and I suspect that there are at least some out there I'm missing.

Topic aside, I like your openness in this question (in fact, it’s what I like about your podcast, too – it doesn’t shy away from difficult problems, the ones that can’t be solved while maintaining purity).

IMO is often misunderstood as (or reduced to) a rather individualistic exercise in utopian thought – e.g. I create my own ideal future, and then hope for it to happen.

lex,
@lex@floe.earth avatar

@alxd @billiglarper @42GB

Half of the posts here on mastodon boil down to „If you … [use AI, eat meat, don’t oppose nuclear energy, buy at the supermarket…], you are not solarpunk.“

(And I’m not saying solarpunk shouldn’t have values! I’m saying reality is often a lot messier than dogmatics).

lex,

@alxd @billiglarper @42GB

I think solarpunk could go at least two ways – I totally see its potential to reach and empower huge groups of people (specifically gardeners and tinkerers 😉) who don’t see themselves part of political and ecological struggles yet.

But it could also become another uninteresting leftist label, used to create an in-group that criticises the mainstream, yet ultimately stays powerless because it only reaches the same tiny minority. That’d be a shame.

🧵1/ Finished reading „Half-Earth Socialism“, and loved it! It's like a roof that could connect the various futures.
https://www.versobooks.com/en-gb/products/2650-half-earth-socialism

The name represents the core ideas - rewilding at least 50% of earth in order to bind carbon and slow down the ongoing mass extinction (→half-earth), and taking decision-making power back from markets and capital to consciously steer the economy and sustain the needs of the many (→socialism).

How old is the oldest still living organism in the world? (Don't google it, please! The Googlers may check their Google quality 😁 )

You can listen about it on https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/when-gardeners-run-wild-ii/id1630784381?i=1000643836080 (and in your favourite podcatcher). It is 100,000 yrs old. I mention also the 14,000 years old.
