90% of the people thrown off the voter rolls in FLA are Democrats.

Voter suppression in Florida. Nearly 1 million registered voters have been dropped from Florida’s active voter rolls since last year, with Democrats & voters w/ no party affiliation (NPA) accounting for 90% of the departed.

lori,

@skykiss 'Election integrity or voter suppression?' in the headline sounds suspiciously equivocal.

A bit of a radical concept has been kicking around in my mind. Create an app that is both a light single user instance and a client. Relays then become brokers of the information stream. Relays can then, in turn, offer filtering services and perhaps even curated streams.

lori,

@mike Yes pls.

I think we're at the point in history where evil wins if the good people do nothing.

By the time you hit a bully, he's already won. We use words, not violence.

Here's a great instructional video of how to win with words; outnumbered and on hostile territory. About 20 minutes, and Jon literally killed the show. It was gone in a month or two.

Use words now so we don't have to use bullets to put the nazis back in their box.

Americans’ sense that their personal economy remains unwell may stem from what they pay for groceries. Great economic data is abstract. Six-dollar boxes of breakfast cereal are not. Nor five dollars for a dozen eggs.
    https://digbysblog.net/2023/12/21/the-price-of-muffins/

    lori,

@TomSullivan You document enough "spread" in the price of English muffins to indicate that the Law of One Price is not in force. This is said to be a symptom of markets that are not entirely competitive.

My own grocery shopping is split between Meijer's and Kroger's. (In Michigan, names of retailers always end in 's.) In my mental shopping list there are "Meijer's items" and "Kroger's items". For someone with less patience, long-term memory, guile, transportation privilege, whatever, I suppose there is a sort of one-stop-shopping tax. But this was the case before the "inflation."

I would really like there to be a more ethical newsletter platform that also has network effects.

But we can make the network effects ourselves, as a community. And that might be a useful thing to build tooling for.

    lori,

@ben I felt that the blogosphere had a good amount of network effect before all the bloggers either lost interest or "went professional" with medium substack and the like. The tooling of the blogosphere hasn't been lost, mainly we've just got to repopularize feeds. If monetization is why you would prefer "newsletters" over blogs, I'm not sure what the options would be. I for one am -very- hesitant to enter anything structured as a "subscription".

This is my council member, and I REALLY dislike this kind of framing. Your "social contract" is pricing out real people who are looking for homes. It's a repugnant position for someone who's housing-secure to take.

    lori,

@dgouldin Everybody's always quick to point out that nobody's entitled to a return on their education investment. Time to get assertive about the fact that nobody's entitled to a return on their real estate investment. Those "neighborhood character" ghouls can cry me a river.

The evening news on the three legacy TV networks, in particular, seems to be single-handedly sponsored by the Pharma industry. And of course every medication ad features at least one dog, even though they're not veterinary medications. Local TV news in the Detroit market (all 5 channels that do news) seems to be jointly sponsored (>50%) by only two advertisers, Gardner White furniture stores and Wallside Windows, both of which produce incredibly aggressive and noisy commercials with "carnival barker" voice-overs, and visual effects that turn my TV into a strobe light.

    "And the surger—"

"—uses four different spools of thread all at the same time, so it can weave together a much more complex and self-reinforcing stitch."
