"Those who have never seen Superior get an inadequate, even inaccurate idea, by hearing it spoken of as a 'lake,' and to those who have sailed over its vast extent the word sounds positively ludicrous. Though its waters are fresh and crystal, Superior is a sea. It breeds storms, and rain and fogs, like the sea. It is cold in mid-summer as the Atlantic. It is wild, masterful, and dreaded as the Black Sea." - Rev. George Grant, Ocean to Ocean, 1872

There's a few different camps on generative "AI":

  • "It's our lord and savior" (mostly AI companies pushing this)
  • "It will kill us all" doomerism (it won't, it has no intelligence or sentience or agenda)
  • "It has some use cases!" centrism (problematic because it enables the lord and savior types & it's also wrong as work products are highly unreliable, even for basic things like summaries and tabulation)
  • "It's a bullshit tech hype, paired with theft and environmental waste" (correct)
markwedel,
@markwedel@mastodon.online avatar

@thomasfuchs I admit to being a centrist only when it comes to my selfish reasons:As a journalist, I want working AI transcription. Plop an interview recording in it, out come words. Have been using Whisper Transcription for a couple of months. Bizarrely uneven results. Sometimes 90% swell, sometimes a string of unpunctuated words. And, I interviewed pianists for a piano festival, and twice it changed "pianist" for "penis." Amusing the first time, problematic the second. AI is very, very, stupid

@augieray I have it for my first time. Fully vaccinated, so it feels like a bad cold. I’d started to relax about it, didn’t want to be that guy in the mask at the Ohio turnpike reststop before Christmas. So I got a little present from a stranger.

@markwedel@mastodon.online avatar

@StillIRise1963 Your original post was more of the type of hot take, as I used to see on Twitter, than an actual discussion. And "journalists fucking over America" is pretty close to trumpers calling journalists "enemies of the people."

markwedel,
@markwedel@mastodon.online avatar

@StillIRise1963 I mean, do you have a specific instance of bad journalism from the Washington Post?

markwedel,
@markwedel@mastodon.online avatar

@StillIRise1963 I am addressing what you said. You said journalists, specifically Washington Post ones, are "fucking over America." This is just wankery.

@electrek Random question: Are there any solar products in the US for those who aren't ready to put panels on the roof, but generate more power than say, a camping panel? Like the story says, I don't need a table, but something like this would be cool to get some nice free sun power.

This article on e-bikes really resonated with me, including the experience of going from “biking isn’t for me” to my bike becoming part of my daily life.

markwedel,

@kimu So many people probably think "biking isn't for me." The image put out there is of the cyclist -- nothing wrong at all with being that super serious road rider. But you don't have to be that. I got into riding in 2011, taking a cruiser type bike, an Electra Townie, on 300 mile tours. I wore cargo shorts, t-shirts. Now have a big Surly Troll and a new Globe Haul electric. It's just too much fun. The only problem: rotten drivers.

markwedel,
@markwedel@mastodon.online avatar

@LabSpokane @kimu I've been riding for a while, but my Globe Haul allowed me to discover something new -- I can, and want to, crank up the crazy steep hills to explore the other side of town! Got the e-bike to replace that second car, determined to only ride it for practical reasons, but I've got the urge to blow off work right now...

markwedel,
@markwedel@mastodon.online avatar

@kimu @CelloMomOnCars @LabSpokane After this post I decided, I'm gonna ride my two-wheeled truck to lunch.

"Reeling from the rise of remote work and the ongoing effects of the Covid pandemic, business groups are embracing policies and practices they long shunned.

In New York City — which has 76 BIDS, the most of any US city — the effort to trim traffic lanes and make Park Avenue look like a linear park has been led by the business group there... Downtown Brooklyn’s pedestrian-priority plan came from a BID. And some of the most popular Open Streets..."

@enobacon I'm not sure if there is a BID here, but the downtown business community and city government have been moving forward on bike lanes and traffic calming for the past few years. And it's all about improving the business environment. It's "green," both environmentally and financially.

@IzabelaKaramia This is Gustavo Van Peanuts. We adopted him from Kalamazoo Animal Rescue. His story is he was purchased at a Detroit reptile show as a kitten, his people decided they didn't want him because he was pooping everywhere. Was found to be infested with parasites. He has his health issues, and an issue with me not going to bed in time (I always brush him as part of my going to bed routine).
