Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.

@pvonhellermannn Things are going the same way they have been, and I doubt they will change. The tropics and subtropics are trending less and less habitable, although in the main, the biological productivity (rice, and other arrangements for multiple-per-year cropping) required to sustain the highest population densities in the world remains (although that is also under threat). Temperate and warm-temperate cropping systems are going completely haywire due to unpredictable moisture and temperature régimes.

It’s bleak and getting bleaker. Even among the wreckage, someone is going to scrape together an existence, but that itself will be bleak.

melanie,

@Tallish_Tom @simon_brooke I don’t think farms should be that large unless you’re in a desert and using the excess land to harvest rain. Not even in BC, where spaces are, relatively speaking, wide-open.

This morning our gardening group gave away a lot of cuttings to a family nearby. We had been nurturing the plants over summer. We also gave away plants that my mother no longer wants.

Gardening can be an incredibly cheap hobby if you know a bit about plants. Many gardeners have piles of black plastic pots they no longer want and some plants like pelargoniums (geraniums) are easy to grow from cuttings. I pick up cheap potting soil from a supermarket as the easy to grow plants don't really care about what they grow in.

@perkinsy Aye. It also requires some boldness to be able to keep alive what shouldn’t be

@bampot My understanding is that W’minster can still walk all over devolution if they’d like.

But I won’t belabour that point, except to say that it puts credence behind my theory of Scotland as an occupied country (although it doesn’t look like a military occupation because it has been fully institutionalized).

Scientist and animal/human health workers are worried, but the public is told ‘nothing to see, nothing to worry about, move on’.

The massive power of agribusiness is threatening the world we live in and also (for those who don't really care), our health by incubating new and dangerous illnesses.

This little video from the channel Primitive Technology, one of my favorites, is an amazing reminder of why we should not use too much ash on clay-dominant soil.

Clay plus ahs is the recipe for cement. It will compact your soil if you put too much of it.

Demonstration... I am so glad someone decided to make a video about this.

Unilaterally (from the W’minster side) put Scotland (as a kingdom), Wales (as a principality), Mann (as a lordship), insular Normandy (as a duchy) and Ulster (as a Free State) on an equal footing with 1932 Canada, except that they have the right to make constitutional legislation by means of referendum, including stripping Westminster’s right to legislate on constitutional matters. Referendums in the colonies (yes there still are some) must be used to dispose of them, according to the options of condominium with all the independent states, or subjection to just one, or secession (only Bermuda would realistically have a chance).

This way, England gets to have the national reckoning it really needs relating to resource availability and feeding itself, and the other countries (except Wales with Llyn Celyn - Liverpool could be annexed to Wales, instead) get to continue or break ties with England as needed.

An educated proletariat is a useful thing. It means that if all the leadership somehow gets snuffed, the society has backups.

When leadership hoards the means of leading, society doesn’t have backups.

Green Party representation in Holyrood relies heavily on list votes from, predominantly, SNP supporters who won't look kindly on them for, as they see it, sabotaging the BHA. This means there's little likelihood of a pro-independence majority at the next election.
