This article by Gary Stevenson is so good, please read every word of it.

“Whatever Jeremy Hunt says, traders know the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. And they’re paid millions to bet on it.”

This is what the world is - it is run by a minute elite for a minute elite and the rest of us, the masses, the natural world, we just don’t count. It is a (will reshare my own piece on this below 1/n)

"they curtly informed my sister and me that our names weren't on the voter list so we couldn't cast our votes.
We insisted this couldn't be right since we had double-checked the Election Commission of India (ECI) website... After adamantly demanding to see the voter lists ourselves, they begrudgingly showed us one, seemingly concealing the other... we didn't back down and persisted until they finally revealed the second list. Our names were right there"

What is your dream road trip? Where would you start? Where would you end up? What stops would you make along the way? It can be short or long, whatever interests you!

melanie,
@melanie@bv.umbrellix.org avatar

@RickiTarr Not really a dream road trip, but a template I think would be interesting: The patch of dust described thus: all of Cascadia all the way inland to the BC-Alberta border/Intermountain West, with the eastern extent being extended into the US using the mountain range that bounds BC to the East, from 54° 40min N to the southern extent of Oregon (line extended east as required). Within that, stopping at every settled place with a population over 100. Unless it’s over 5000, I won’t be stopping for any longer than to take a self-portrait, unless that’s where the campsite nearest the 5k town is.

Start point: I already live in the start point town, which is Prince George, BC, just under 54° North and 122° West.

melanie,
@melanie@bv.umbrellix.org avatar

@RickiTarr Really? The greater PNW is actually mostly a dour place. Even when it’s dry and cold, it’s somehow drab and dreary like England.

Anyone else struggling to see any prospects for turning things around? I will keep on trying to do what I can. Of course. But 2024 is challenging.

Last year did a post about how I wasn’t motivated by hope but by . I now realise i got that wrong. Hope isn’t just fluffy “things will be alright”. Hope is some flicker of belief that you and others can change things; I did, actually, have “hope”. Less now, but will keep going.

melanie,

@pvonhellermannn Things are going the same way they have been, and I doubt they will change. The tropics and subtropics are trending less and less habitable, although in the main, the biological productivity (rice, and other arrangements for multiple-per-year cropping) required to sustain the highest population densities in the world remains (although that is also under threat). Temperate and warm-temperate cropping systems are going completely haywire due to unpredictable moisture and temperature régimes.

It’s bleak and getting bleaker. Even among the wreckage, someone is going to scrape together an existence, but that itself will be bleak.

@Tallish_Tom @simon_brooke I don’t think farms should be that large unless you’re in a desert and using the excess land to harvest rain. Not even in BC, where spaces are, relatively speaking, wide-open.
