I’m hearing murmurs of YouTube blocking browsers that support ad blockers.
You know where you don’t have to worry about such things? Host your videos on a #PeerTube instance and use #Owncast for your live video streaming needs.
@owncast I would be very interested to see how well Peertube copes with the traffic of a reasonably popular YouTuber. I know webtorrent is meant to take the load off, but ...
is it able to do this effectively in practice?
at some point the static assets for the page would be significant bandwidth too?
@owncast fwiw, I’ve found the DDG browser for Mac to be fantastic for avoiding YT ads
There are very few videos that won’t work — I assume the kind you can’t embed — but it mostly just plays the embedded version with no ads
Unfortunately, there’s no way to link to the DDG Mac browser without initiating a download (I have several frustrations like that with DDG) but it’s worked well for me. no affiliation
@owncast are any open #Peertube instances LGBTQ-friendly? My first search showed a strong homophobic/anti-queer bias, which dissuaded me from looking for any more videos or streaming/hosting information.
@owncast I've been on Mastodon since late November last year, and am finally comfortable & confident enough to explore the rest of the #Fediverse. Are there any guides available on #Owncast & #PeerTube suitable for a complete rookie?
@owncast I will never allow ads. I would rather block an entire site than allow it to serve ads.
I normally keep everything owned by Google or Facebook blocked except for in Torbrowser or via ed party frontends.
If Youtube becomes something like Hulu or Netflix that depends on approved hardware or software, I will treat the entire site as having been entirely shut down. It is likely that a significant portion of Youtube's user base would abandon them as well in this case. Adblocking is used by almost half of desktop/laptop users.
You will NOT find my videos on Youtube unless reposted there by a 3ed party. I am generally unaware of such posts as I neither have nor want a Google account. I host them here directly and on archive.org which does not log IP addresses and does not support itself by ads at all.
Remember, they can hide their content behind adwalls or paywalls, but they cannot force you to consume it. I can live with a 100% shutdown (or block) of every single ad supported site on the net
@owncast Isn't that like all linux browsers then? Seriously, I didn't even remember youtube had ads until I tried to pull up a video on someone's Windows machine this week.
@owncast owncast is fun esp when you want extra quality to stream to your friends with enough bandwidth
also the passthrough stream option is really neat to use with obs because then I don't need a beefy server to reencode
