Alina Habba, prowling the well of the courtroom, said this case started before Tish James was elected, pointing at AG. Engoron reminds her to stick to the facts, which she says she is trying to do, but that James’s conduct is part of the factual record.

Governments need to stop handing big IT contracts to the likes of Fujitsu and Accenture.

Time and again, massive failures and cost to the public purse. And in the case of Fujitsu, hundreds of lives ruined.

Not to mention the cronyism and corruption working with these contractors leads to.

peteriskrisjanis,

@danjac they need strong IT stuff who can design, nurture and support systems long term. Outsourcing mostly does not work.

I had an "ah ha" moment when thinking about the angry responses to yesterday's blog post.

(This one, if you missed it.) https://terikanefield.com/section-3-and-the-spirit-of-liberty/

First, I'll share a positive response. (Screenshot #1)

(Screenshot #2 was typical of the angry responses.)

About 5 years ago, I took the tact of responding to "there are never any consequences" by listing the consequences.

I figured, you know, facts. For example, see #3

@Teri_Kanefield interesting thoughts, thank you.
Said that, in Europe there are quite few cases where democracy has laws that does not allow anti-democratic parties to take power, and freedom of speech is also limited.
I know Americans see it all of nothing, but there are much more nuanced takes. In general, system has to be able to withstand attacks like in America. There is no guarantee America system can do that.

@Teri_Kanefield I know, I just point out how it is addressed in other countries with democracy systems.

tomi, to repair

As I wrote in my previous post I was so happy when I finally discovered what’s wrong with my 20yr old . A faulty microswitch. Except that it wasn’t. The joy was over after a day and the symptoms returned:

  • When the heater was turned on or off, the dishwasher stopped.
  • If I opened or closed the door or hit it, it started washing again.
  • The symptoms were not repeatable – sometimes it was enough to hit the door one time, sometimes 5 times.

I disassembled the dishwasher for the 23rd time. Added a bolt to a microswitch to keep it in place (it was a bit wobbly). Nothing. Still random disconnects.

I almost went crazy.

Lastly, I disassembled the control board.

There are a bunch of relays (4) and one transformer soldered on the board.

https://blog.rozman.info/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/20240104_123200-1024x576.jpgI’ve run some advanced diagnostics (hit every relay with a screwdriver while washing).

Sometimes the left relay switched on/off, and sometimes it didn’t. So definitely, the vibration caused the switch. But which one is faulty? Again, there was no real pattern.

Lastly, I pushed the screwdriver between the transformer on the left and the relay (the one with the title NAiS 10A…).

Finally, a pattern! Whenever I slightly turned the screwdriver, which moved both elements, the relay switched the power off/on. Heureka! One of the contacts is bad, but which one?

I turned the board around and (still while running) I budged the relay and the transformer pins. On a second try, I found the loose one:

https://blog.rozman.info/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/20240104_175511-1.jpg
The solder break wasn’t visible at all (and I used a magnifying glass). It was the size of a hair. Only when I touched the pin with a screwdriver and moved it a bit, it disconnected the electric circuit.

I resoldered it and now the dishwasher runs as it should.

So it wasn’t a microswitch. And also it wasn’t a relay.

It.was.a.pin. When the big(ger) current flew through it (8A), it randomly disconnected.
Damn.

P. S.: Wife knew the whole time. The first thing she said when the dishwasher started acting weird was: it is a ‘programator’ (a logic board).

Some idiot on here claiming that Russia and China don't sponsor genocides.

I mean I suppose they don't need to, they can just do the genocides all by themselves.

peteriskrisjanis,

@danjac what is this obsession with choosing teams? USA has very morally questionable foreign politics. However, Russia has directly killed hundreds of thousands via very direct expansionist wars. Yes, they both bad, but they are not even in same ballpark.

peteriskrisjanis,
@peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

@danjac I know it breaks their brain that they have to choose your support strategically and idealism takes a second seat, but that is how the real world works. If they want to see left more victorious, supporting war mongers like putin is not the way to go.
Said that, I understand left leaning people who want war just to be gone and to focus on social issues. Not that we can choose the state of the world, but I understand their desire.

    I’m so sick of explaining to people why they can’t Nazi whisper.

    Nazis being Nazis is a choice driven entirely by emotions and the wrong actions they take when feeling them.

    You absolutely cannot talk those emotions away with logical arguments about their politics.

    You have to create different emotions in them, for example by shunning them or punching them.

    @thomasfuchs esentially they have been shaken out of it, or they will go on to murder to everyone else and themselves.

    Companies do job postings for one reason only - it's a legal requirement. They will fill the position through their network or recruiters. It's a lot of make-work for people who make an effort in writing resumes and cover letters and HR who have to go through the motions of pretending to read them.

    That's why the lists of requirements have become sillier over time, it's just to cut down on the make work by reducing the pool of potential candidates that won't be looked at anyway.

    peteriskrisjanis,
    @peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

    @danjac we do actually have job postings on our website. Recruiters handle mostly things you described actually, after someone applies. While recruiters will find people trough other means, I actually got through the normal process.
    However I have heard about the practice you described, or various different forms of it, like this is the way they apply for market / legal requirements, but they have no intention to hire at all. That IS cruel.

    It really shouldn't surprise anyone that the Supreme Court didn't take up Jack Smith on an expedited path (bypassing the appeals court) on presidential immunity. It was a big ask and a big departure from normal procedure, and for such a politically charged issue jumping in now would look very political. Since the appeal courts is already on a fast track for this (Jack Smith very wisely filed for expedited consideration in both courts to cover exactly this eventuality), new delays should not be extreme.

    Also, you may hear some commentators talking about the unwritten DOJ rule about not bringing charges too close to an election (60 or 90 days). However, in this case the issue isn't new charges, but proceedings already in progress. So these are really very different situations.

    peteriskrisjanis,
    @peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

    @lauren how long delay we talk about?

    peteriskrisjanis,
    @peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

    @lauren "for such a politically charged issue jumping in now would look very political" in the end it is very clear question with huge political implications, no? Or we talking "politics is the way GOP will take over and never gonna have elections ever" here.

    Threads, to British viewers of a certain age, was not a social media app but a documentary about major improvements being made to Sheffield city centre thanks to the Soviet Strategic Rocket Forces.

    (Apparently they nuked Sheffield to knock out the steel industry, which was puzzling as I thought they could have just let Thatcher do it for them).

    peteriskrisjanis,
    @peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

    @danjac reading about cold war reasoning why to nuke this or other places gets very bizarre as things move on. I guess you need some type of algorithm to select targets but dear lord. Also no one fuck knows what would be current selection. As far as I have heard, USA forces prefer to use regular missiles if they can get away with it, as they would be more effective other than, you know, utterly devastating human race in the process.

    peteriskrisjanis,
    @peteriskrisjanis@toot.lv avatar

    @danjac I have also strong belief that no way nuclear exchange would happen the way it is described - it is mostly MAD show piece only. People quote that people are trained to fire those missiles no matter what, ecetera, but it is just not how things are happening.
    Comparing to real existential threat of global climate change, this is just exercise of human vanity, hey, we can almost destroy ourselves.
