I mean, congrats to Apple for creating quite the buzz-worthy ad.

People can't shut up about it.

(It's absolutely going to be on a few resumes, I guarantee.)

@jrconlin The team worked flat out on it for weeks.

@stux Very impressive, but it does make me a little sad.

We are capable of making amazing and clever machines (like a CT scanner) to assist doctors and the medical profession, but spend the money and effort on horrible machines (tanks, missiles, guns) that mean that doctors and surgeons are required.

Did you know FireFox has its own proccess manager?
I just discovered it by accident, trying to open Windows' one with ctrl+shift+esc,
but actually pressed shift+esc and opened firefox's one

@kohelet Typing about:processes in the address bar should also get you there.

Having previously set one to be a mini web server providing approximate room temperature available in , spent some time this evening working with my second Pico W.

Again it is a web server accessible through NextCloud, but this one is a password generator.

Pleased with how it has turned out - a good result.

As a guy I have to say that really is a neat distro. Very easy to get running, many things included and of course being very solid.

@Edent I now have a great track by Terrorvision in my head. Thank you!

Are you using a copy of Firefox from Mozilla, or a version packaged by your Linux distro?

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@Edent I do not know what Pop_OS ships with but you might want to try a tarball from Mozilla directly looking at this support question - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1412073

(The app armour option is another possibility.)

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@Edent Ah, my mistake, apologies.

I have had a look and have found this open bug - https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1669870

Please feel free to add any additional commentary to it if you think it might help.

Dear @mozilla
Please, please, please put the RSS indicator back in Firefox.

People need to know about this technology which empowers users over greedy, controlling corporations.

Update: As many have pointed out, you can use @thunderbird as an RSS feed reader, and there are many #firefox add-ons to restore the RSS indicator (one of which I'm already using). But my point is that Firefox needs to lean into RSS as an answer to all the crap that is the modern web, and help educate users about it

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@RL_Dane @mozilla Hello! The best place to head to for this is the Mozilla feedback platform at:

https://connect.mozilla.org/

Feedback provided there gets collected by a team of people who read it and gather data about the most common issues.

I am catching up a bit having been at in Brussels last weekend. It was a really busy and positive event, with lots of people at both the and stands, the Mozilla and Web Performance devrooms, and the cookie van.

I have a massive amount of appreciation for the volunteers behind FOSDEM. Your hard work and ingenuity was very awesome. It was very good to see a few of the volunteer jackets on the journey home being worn with well-deserved pride.

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

Work on this should never stop, but it felt like there was more diversity at than a few years ago. Open source is software by the people for the people, so I am very glad that more people felt comfortable attending.

I spoke to so many people at the Mozilla stand and across FOSDEM - people who just want to thank Mozillians for the work we are doing and people I have very much wanted to meet in person for a long time. There was some really good feedback gathered that I hope we can use.

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@melroy I am sorry to hear that, but I hope you still had a great FOSDEM weekend and managed to make it home safely with lots of new project ideas and things to learn more about.

I want to open any link that comes from another application (IRC, Discord, Steam, games, etc.) in a Private window, not a regular one.

And I don't want a plugin for this; I want it to be default behavior.

I've submitted this at https://connect.mozilla.org/t5/ideas/open-links-from-other-applications-in-private-window/idi-p/51181, so if you have comments or kudos, please have a look and join the official discussion.

@LinuxAndYarn Hi Rachel. I recommend that you head over to https://connect.mozilla.org/. It is the community feedback site for Firefox and is the best place to raise this idea.

The same pathway through the university. In the foreground a placard reads "Not all rods lead to Chrome" (a Firefox advert).

hey @mozilla, there's many issues with the .deb install instructions from https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/install-firefox-linux#w_install-firefox-deb-package-for-debian-based-distributions - where do i report this?

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@Anarcat @mozilla Thank you for your feedback. I have corrected the article to rectify the small formatting issue around the guidance to install wget (if needed).

To confirm, actual Debian maintainers who have been involved in packaging Firefox have been involved in this. Thank you.

To make extra cash while Iโ€™m unemployed, I will be launching a new bespoke UUID service that hand-crafts vanity UUIDs for USD $1,000 each.

Surely thereโ€™s a market for this, right?

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@ramsey Definitely. You could also offer your ultra high net worth customers the possibility of UUID in a range of premium fonts.

Sure, it may not be unexpected, but it was a very healthy user population in that space.

What I'd like to see is a TV show like Grand Designs, but posh people who decide to build their own web app.

Kevin McCloud appears halfway through the show in his hard hat, shaking his head sadly.

"Unfortunately their decision to use Kubernetes has led to a very problematic deployment. Meanwhile, their offshore React contractor has left for another job, leaving Jocasta and Tarquin trying to write the JSX themselves..."

Saw my first Tesla Cybertruck in the wild a few days ago. Longer than I expected, but the hood height was lower than I expected โ€” much lower than on big new SUVs & pickups. But worse pedestrian/cyclist visibility than smaller cars, and sure wouldn't want one to hit me.

Related: a look at SUV bloat: https://slate.com/business/2023/12/cars-trucks-suv-sales-electric-safety-risk.html

@stshank It took me a little while you see it (and maybe it is because of the text in the door in your photos), but it reminds me of the type of vehicle you see in a Judge Dredd film.

AVFTCN 030 โ€“ Book: โ€œMaking A Metaverse That Mattersโ€

I have always been intrigued by โ€œwhat comes after the web browserโ€ for how we interact with information online. After all, the web browser has been our primary way of interacting with information since the early 1990s. Even when we are using โ€œappsโ€ on our phones today, in many cases they are effectively web browsers wrapped in a customized layer.

http://crowsnest.danyork.com/2023/12/30/avftcn-030-book-making-a-metaverse-that-matters/

plwt,
@plwt@mstdn.social avatar

@danyork I think that the "metaverse" concept has been too tightly linked to VR headsets.

The idea of a digital overlay on the real world optionally accessible through a mobile device camera or through special glasses is an interesting one that would be good to see explored further.

    @stux Space is awesome and space science brings people together to solve big problems and make the world a better place.

    The engineering of today's launch was impressive but unfortunately did not end well. I would much rather have seen a documentary about a global group of students launching a high altitude balloon with their own home built instrument package (for example).

    It would not have been so big, but the goal and the achievement would have been far greater.

    So, as part of re-doing our bathroom, I bought a slightly nicer than average toilet and I... am suspecting they accidentally sent me a different, much-more-expensive-than-expected model.

    It has a remote control.

    It is, for some reason, illuminated. From the inside.
