Apple Replay has been updated for the week. I’ve listened to 1000 separate artists as of this week. No surprise as to which of them is still in the number 1 slot. I’ll be surprised if they are overtaken by anyone else this year. Someone or something remarkable will need to come along in the remaining six months of 2023.

Screenshot from Apple Music Replay showing The Beaches as my top played artist on 3923 minutes.

@ianRobinson Well, we’ve got two tracks “The Cats of Laredo” (July) and “Later Train” (August) that might tickle your fancy.

(But, truly, we don’t want to be everyone’s number one, but if we could have a 1000 of you have us as your number 75 for a bit, that’d be cool.)

Feels trite to be saying this, but if the general position was "move fast and break things", then the only way to compete might have been seen to be “try to move even faster and break things”, by which point you have a competition for as many as people as possible to break as many things as possible.

And again, trite to put it this way, but, um. That was obviously a bad thing.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@danhon If I were in a “Move fast, break things” environment for real, I would add “Fix things quickly, and don’t break things that way again.”

I’m not and more apt things that guide me are “Real artists ship”, “Embrace the suckage”, “It may be released, but it still can be rewritten and rearranged”, and “What can we do different here”.

Once achieving the ability to grab the low-hanging fruit, I look for raising the machine to reach the next higher fruit.

And, don’t miss tax deadlines.

This week in Best of Wikipedia …

“Conversely, to English speakers who do not know Spanish, there is nothing redundant about ‘the La Brea tar pits’ because the name ‘La Brea’ is opaque: the speaker does not know that it is Spanish for ‘the tar’ and thus ‘the La Brea Tar Pits’ translates to ‘the the tar tar pits.’”

@adriancooke And the crazy part is the tar pits are closer to Fairfax Ave. than La Brea Ave.

There's no this month but don't let that stop you from supporting ! Bandcamp's fees are actually very reasonable, and musicians need the money even more when there aren't events reminding people to spend some money. So, hey! Spend some money at Bandcamp this month!

My usual request is you spend the same amount you usually spend on music streaming, which is a pittance for most of us! Match those funds!

Oh, and boost this message!

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@etherdiver It should be noted that on Juneteenth, Bandcamp will be donating their portion of sales to worthy groups.

To be honest, my druthers would be that the groups get that Bandcamp portion than me, as with a standard Bandcamp Friday.

@mcmullin @nigelharpur @composers I don’t know. I think the idea of chords truly kicked into gear with the piano-forte. Even that oversimplifies. While polyphony seems to be the basis of old folk and church music, as choirs, organs, and operas developed in Europe, the idea of multiple voices in three and four parts became a norm. I think there’s also something to be said about chords becoming more widespread because tuning got less artificial (tempering).

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@mcmullin @nigelharpur @composers Remembering the great pioneering works of Wendy Carlos, it was with compositions of Bach and Beethoven that were essentially polyphonic, though with a highly constrained set of harmonic rules. Now the Moog could only play one note at a time, so, the technology was not granting Carlos the choices we have.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@mcmullin @nigelharpur @composers @microtones Fair enough. I was using the wrong words in trying to make a distinction between modern understanding of note frequency as oppposed to the Ancient Greek system based on natural numbers.

I really am looking for work now, and I really am seeing all sorts of "required to come to this building for this amount of time every week and sit on zoom there instead", and all I can see is a management strata that really, really does not know what they bring to an organization if they can't look over people's shoulders or interrupt them at random times.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@mhoye I work for a place that wants 50% on-site attendance. With trivial commute, I’m in everyday. No manager is peering over my shoulder. There have been fortunate happenstances where something happened faster because we were under the same roof. But, here’s the thing, there’s also assembling and shipping onsite and those folks never had the remote option. From the point of view of more equal treatment, developers and assemblers sharing some of the same commute misery makes sense.

pomCountyIrregs,
@pomCountyIrregs@mstdn.social avatar

@mhoye Sometimes, that point of view curdles into “Sucks to be you.” No accusation, just something I’ve observed through my alleged career.

But more to what could be a better point, the desire to have employees on site is not always reducible to insecure, coercive middle managers. Sometimes yes, but it’s my fortune to not be at such a place, and I’m inclined to push back when knowledge workers complain because the world changed and employers did not instantly optimize.
