If it was possible to live forever, would you want to?

puffer,
@puffer@esoteric.party avatar

@RickiTarr Nope. I want my consciousness to transcend the physical plane. As frightening as the unknown might be, all things die. Maybe I’ll be a tree on a beautiful lush planet; maybe my essence will evaporate into the cosmos. My only fear is I’ll be returned to this earth, this modern life. I’m tired of earthly concerns as it is, in 20 years I can only imagine, forget about 100, 200, 1000…

Name a movie or TV series where none of the characters are actually good people. Explain why you think that.

puffer,
@puffer@esoteric.party avatar

@billyjoebowers @RickiTarr hear hear. So sick of shows about shitty people, especially shitty rich people. I don’t even need aspirational. Just people who are fundamentally kind and decent, like so many people actually are. There’s plenty of drama and comedy and horror to be had in ordinary lives.

Album of the Day
David Bowie - Station to Station

I think it was @Robotron who was saying that the other day that this was their favorite Bowie album. I saw it was still in print so I ordered it as an early birthday present.

I can’t say I like it more than Low but not a bad cut on this.

puffer,
@puffer@esoteric.party avatar

@flockofnazguls @Robotron it’s top tier. I just really, really like Low.

Buy my old Technics 1200 Mk2 turntable. I’m willing to ship it in North America but I’d want to pay to have it packed by UPS. The anti-skating control is not working but these are very serviceable machines. Otherwise fully working, in great condition with a very new Olofon Red needle.

Over on the digital lo-fi blog @Robotron has written up an excellent primer on French musical phenomenon Jacno. This is the kind of thing you won't really find in the music press, deep examinations of overlooked, niche performers. It's in 3 parts so I'm dropping the 2nd one here. This is so good.

Back in 9th grade, 1980, I bought my first Runaways album from a cutout bin, Queens of Noise. I soon got the 2 other major label albums, the debut & Waiting for the Night. I didn’t love them like The Ramones, Hendrix but I spent a lot of time studying these records. In Toronto that summer found Live in Japan, sorta rare at the time. Sold them all about 6 years ago. I was done with The Runaways. However I’ve never seen this footage before. Looks like crap, but nostalgia.

Betty Davis - Is It Love or Desire

Shout out to @gnitro for hipping me to a Betty Davis album I wasn’t aware of. Fascinating story behind this “lost” record. Absolutely perfect discography, Ms Davis has

Reupping: On the anniversary of moving to Mastodon full time I’ve written a long blog post about my thoughts and experiences, the good, the not great. With some thoughts about Bluesky as well.

This platform is one best things that’s happened to the web in the past 20 years. It’s not without its problems and it’s probably not for everyone but for me this janky platform has been pretty great.

For the month of October I'm taking my swing at writing about some of my favorite, lesser known movies. The Introduction gives some idea of the what and why.

So I wrote a bunch of words about Romeo Void, the VH1 show Bands Reunited, and how sometimes it's not the hit that gets remembered.

(Shoutout to @Robotron and @Defiance for helping me pick the records I listened to for this)

This Pat Finnerty video has a joke that made me laugh as hard as I’ve ever laughed at a joke on YouTube.

    @etherdiver @Robotron it was probably around 2003/4 when I saw them. A small club in Providence RI. With The Russian Futurists and Junior Senior, two other early lofi electronic acts. I really wish I remembered more about the music. I was drinking a lot around this time so… I had fun. The two drummers and samples thing was cool. Dude is a great drummer.

    … also punk, rock, dance, and more! It’s all part of today’s 2023 Bubbling Under show on @WFMU, featuring 40 or so terrific ‘23 tunes that just didn’t fit into my countdown show last week. Tune in at noon ET (9am Pacific / 5pm UK)! And a happy new year to all!

    As much as people wish for the Quote Posts feature here on Mastodon, I kinda like there is no endless loops of quote memes here.

    Like "Quote this post and drop the most iconic photo of you".

    They go on and on forever. It gets tiring on other places.

    On the other hand here I could just mute the word "iconic" for 48 hours.

    puffer,
    @puffer@esoteric.party avatar

    @rolle If/when quote posts comes to Mastodon there needs to be a way to turn off people’s quote posts in the same way you can turn off seeing their boosts, but independent of that.
