Such moral cowards running New York University -- ordering student protestors to write phony apologies.

This is right out of the authoritarian playbook -- and it craps on every notion of freedom of expression.

https://www.nytimes.com/2024/05/17/nyregion/nyu-protests-apology-letters.html

You don't have to agree with the protestors' politics. But you should damn well understand that America is in wave of McCarthyism right now.

@dangillmor I apologize to the Authoritarians for being opposed to authoritarianism.

WhyNotZoidberg, (edited ) to microsoft
@WhyNotZoidberg@topspicy.social avatar

Having an AI ("Windows Recall" is enabled by default) that tracks every move you do on your computer and of course has no filter (Microsoft's own FAQ clearly states it will remember every password you type) is idiotic. But Tech bros are frothing at the mouth for anything AI so here we are.

pyperkub,
@pyperkub@mastodon.social avatar

@WhyNotZoidberg it has had plenty of useful applications outside of the chatbots. Breast cancer detection, wildfire detection, age many, many others. The trick is avoiding the GIGO issues and training it on known good data. Don't become a zealot here, it may be a problem but it can also help with the solution.

pyperkub,
@pyperkub@mastodon.social avatar

@WhyNotZoidberg one thing which irked me as a gamer over a decade ago was how power inefficient nVidia Graphics cards were. They NEVER focused on making them efficient, and then they became the favorite for crypto miners and now AI. smh

pyperkub,
@pyperkub@mastodon.social avatar

@WhyNotZoidberg actually, it's a great idea. AI can be really, really useful, even with it's flaws

The problem is that the AI is being used for surveillance more than assistance, and blabs about you to anyone. It doesn't serve you , but someone else

If it runs locally with no outbound traffic it's a fantastic thing - it's not the tech, it's the unethical people in charge

I took a new (to me) lens to San Francisco, the Canon FD 50mm/1.4, which I haven't had a chance to test before going (which I in hindsight realized was not very wise). I shot 4 rolls of film on the trip. Eagerly awaiting the scans to come back from the lab...

@Gargron hopefully the fog only made for great shots, instead of limiting them!

When Russians invaded Ukraine, we did not stop them.
When Russians tortured Ukrainian soldiers, we did not stop them.
When Russians raped Ukrainian women, we did not stop them.
When all the values that we so proudly claim to hold were violated, we did not stop them.
Because conveniently, Ukraine is not a member of NATO. And that is the comfortable blanket we pull over our eyes to fall asleep and forget our human responsibility.
Americans, Canadians, Europeans, Australians…
Wake the fuck up.

@randahl my first impression of this post is that it can be construed as an argument in favor of World War 3. I'm far more in favor of the current situation than such a dramatic escalation.

@arstechnica Yet another review which doesn't touch the 2 awful truths - 1) How does the car handle Privacy/how does it perform when opting out of data-sharing (f at all possible)? and 2) How is the Car with ZERO subscription services?

As a tech site, I expect better of Ars - please start including this information in ALL car reviews.

As is, when I see "Class leading Technology" I hear that it's great at spying on the "owner".
