If any other is looking to enable , I recommend one of the many great write-ups from @milosz - especially since the main masto site has very little mention of it. I had completely overlooked the git commit.

https://sleeplessbeastie.eu/2022/11/17/how-to-use-libretranslate-with-mastodon/

raineer,

My only addition to the blog post is, when it's time to install a bunch of languages, instead of installing each one "install translate-jp_en", just do "install translate" and you will get them all.

It was 60 language packs as of tonight.

This full install took 14GB of space.

raineer,

@milosz yes, that will install the full list, I think I found the syntax in the libretranslate docs.

I couldn’t find a syntax to let me install more than one per call, otherwise.

Thank you for the guide, it worked perfectly!

Even after Trump bragged about committing treason.

I have fancier than this TWSBI Vac700R, but since I'm clumsy and it holds a bunch of ink, it's my daily driver. I have dropped and needed to repair two of my other pens, so until I get a rug under my desk, they're staying tucked away. I'd have said "until I become more careful" but experience tells me that's not going to happen.

    raineer,

@binsk I am in same boat! I have so many fancy pens and my daily drivers are a TWSBI ECO (holds a ton of ink and super easy to fill and clean) and a Lamy 2000.

Defaults in a distro are underrated.

Sure, you can install vanilla Arch or Debian and then replicate every other from there, but most people (even more tech-y ones!) don't want to spend their time on that, and just have everything set up as they want it out of the box.

    raineer,

@gregorni I feel like the defaults are the distro.

You’re right we’re can create anything from anything, but it’s how those choices come together which create a package useful enough to market as its own thing

I am seriously tired of books and blogs and TED talks telling me how to grow a business. I want to know how to sustain one at a comfortable level. My dentist isn't looking to 10X his practice; neither is my accountant or my lawyer, and they're all (a) happy and (b) not regarded as weird or as failures. Where are the best-sellers on how to maintain a business until you're ready to pass it on to the next person?

    raineer,

@gvwilson We have been well-conditioned to know that all things must grow forever. Money is useless unless it's infinite.

It bums me out that this has trickled-down from wall street to main street. I'd love to have a comfortable business doing what I love; the need to infinitely grow is not healthy.

Question: Is there a website/app which will let you search a person's name to see which primary they voted in?

    raineer,

@BlackAzizAnansi in my county, party registration is publicly searchable if you also know their zip and birthday.

And then you can edit their party registration if you know last 4 SSN or their DL. You are shown a warning not to do this. I’m not sure that’s really all that secure heh.

@b0rk Great article today on single-person instances.

My instance has a pretty-small user base. I just wanted to second the advice about using fedi.buzz as a relay. It’s fantastic for both hashtags and instances.

Over about six months I ramped up to relaying larger and larger instances, keeping an eye on the bandwidth. This past month I extended to .social. It wasn’t too crazy on transfer but it really did wonders for content.

Well, I tried setting up @wallabag via docker-compose using a Tailscale MagicDNS address as the TLD and it didn't go particularly well, but no harm no foul there, I knew it was a long shot.

I'll try again using the old school by-hand install instructions that are the default and use Cloudflare to actually tunnel out to a real honest to god internet accessible TLD and things should go better.

    fun with #wallabag and #selfhosting

    raineer,

@feoh I never have luck with docker installs, it always seems to go better the old fashioned way.

Maybe I should actually learn how to docker someday

    raineer, to music

Don’t know if this will work but I want to ask the #music lovers here…

Anyone have good alternatives for #roon ?

I’ve had a subscription with them for 6 years now. Kinda getting tired of the cost:benefit ratio.

What I do like: Metadata, organization of the library contents, decent UI, mobile app support (Roon more than ARC, but ARC is ok)

What I don’t really need or like: Remote playing (controlling other speakers in the house), paying Tidal if I want good recommendations, kinda bloated and slow app

    I’ve used plenty of #vlc , #foobar, #clementine / #strawberry, even #amarok back in the day

I’m really looking for any music solution that’s a little bit of a media manager w/metadata, especially if it can manage all that on a server.

I don’t mind paying for services, I’m just tired of the Roon bills on top of streaming services too.

Like - I want less than Roon but more than VLC.

    Any recommendations?

    #musicdon #audiophile
