I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... PC Revolutions, C compilers clacking huge Floppy Disks , Lisp Machine Nirvana, Unix Wars, building an early ISP, Metro Wireless, #Startups that went down, Hardware Image Processing, Objective C training from Brad Cox, first C++ Conference, unreadable Perl, lots of Python, Ruby, #Clojure and now back to #Python, #DevOps, #AWSCommunityBuilder, #Serverless, #Sourdough Software System and Cloud Architectures. Not time to die!

As The Economist has noted, “the arsenal of deceit is highly effective at keeping malign leaders in power, which is perhaps why global democracy has been in retreat for the past decade.” That’s why the media needs to call a lie a lie, and not worry if doing so appears partisan, while making clear that Trump’s authoritarian agenda would mark a radical break from America as we know it. This isn’t just another normal presidential race.

I know this is really obvious to most of us but as someone who witnessed the rampant racism, sexism, anti-gayness etc of even the 80s and 90s, it’s pretty clear that the current culture war is just a response to us emerging from those patterns! watch any movie from 1990 or around there and it will blow your mind what was common & totally acceptable. We are waking up from a very deep sleep, and some folks can’t handle it

rberger,
@rberger@hachyderm.io avatar

@asbestos @seachanger Yeah, I recently had a flashback to being in like 4th or 5th grade (which is a very long time ago) and some kid calling me a “homo”. I think I said something like, “well yes I’m a Homo Sapien” having no idea what he meant and I don’t think he really knew what it meant other than an attempt to be an insult.

We really need to stop the MAGAnuts and finish off the transition to a mature and welcoming society.

This video from Corridor Crew is pretty amazing. They re-create the nearly perfect compositing from the penguin dance sequence in Mary Poppins, which was achieved using high intensity sodium vapor lights and a very custom beam splitter, instead of a blue or green screen. It truly feels like a lost art rediscovered. When the matted footage just perfectly drops in I gasped haha https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=UQuIVsNzqDk

rberger,
@rberger@hachyderm.io avatar

@ja2ke That was fascinating. I had no idea about the Mary Poppins technique. I wonder if you can make single frequency LEDs instead of Sodium lamps? Seems like that should be easy. I thought that they effectively are and they use phosphors or quantum dots to make them broader spectrum.

“We’ve added almost a million bee colonies in the past five years. We now have 3.8 million, the census shows. Since 2007, the first census after alarming bee die-offs began in 2006, the honeybee has been the fastest-growing livestock segment in the country! And that doesn’t count feral honeybees, which may outnumber their captive cousins several times over.”

It’s amazing that the US Medical / Insurance / Pharmacy complex still runs on Faxing stuff back and forth. And do I mean back and forth.

Whenever I get a new drug or its a new year or I switch Insurance companies, it can take scores of faxing between the pharmacy and the doctor with the Insurance company requiring both to jump thru hoops.

I commented on this with the Insurance mail order pharmacy and their response was this insane tidbit: (1/3)

Every few years, an article runs that reminds the world I helped stream the first feature film over the internet—“Party Girl” with Parker Posey, who I got to meet and who hit the button to start streaming. Today is one such day. https://collider.com/party-girl-movie-premiere/

@glennf I can’t remember, were you using InterNex as the ISP / hosting service then? We were doing a bunch of early hosting for people distributing video and software with International server farms back then.

rberger,

@glennf I remember CUSeeMe. I can’t remember if we had servers at the Westin. I remember going there to do something, but it probably wasn’t InterNex then.

Can someone please explain why, on a planet with 5 billion too many people and , declining birthrates are a problem?

I'm at a loss.

rberger,
@rberger@hachyderm.io avatar

@LeftistLawyer Educating the population (actually ensuring that women get an education and economic opportunity) automatically reduces population growth.

It’s a win-win! And besides avoiding ecological disaster, there will be much fewer assholes and live would be much nicer.

I hate 'reaction' videos. They're basically just two tropes: Black people have never heard Rush, or old people have never heard Rap. 🙄

rberger,
@rberger@hachyderm.io avatar

@patrickworld On the other hand, I’ve seen some where I really enjoy watching someone, for the first time, listen to a song I really loved and see how much they love it too. And sometimes their interpretation give me new insights into the song as well.

If the NY court doesn't order the sale of Trump properties to come up with the money for the bond he is REQUIRED to post during appeals, it will be simply the latest example of the criminal-in-chief's ability to evade accountability.

Need water heater alternative ideas! Our gas water heater just broke, YAY! (Also 🥶showers😭). My husband says its my fault because I am apparently manifesting things to break so they can be replaced with more environmentally friedly options. We had an electric tankless water heater at our old house, what other options do we have? We have solar panels that can handle adding more to the system.

rberger,
@rberger@hachyderm.io avatar

@adrianco @ai6yr @douglasvb @LittleYetFierce I just spent yesterday learning all I could about heat pump water heaters after I discovered that my current 14 year old electric water heater is what is adding $200/month to my electric bill. This video was a pretty good intro. He also has a good video comparing the top units https://youtu.be/YT0zTRD7N2s?si=_5CQ2Db4ek-chQ45

No, you didn't. Turning a thing off and on again never fixes a problem.

In many cases, it might work around a problem. But the problem isn't fixed until you don't have to turn it off and on again any more.

"Waiting for Mueller prevented us from talking to the American people about the facts we already knew about Trump’s rancid relationship with the Russian government. We should not repeat that consequential mistake again this year... We should take these trials from the legal domain and bring them into the political one." -Simon Rosenberg

Really smart advice! Sitting around with bated breath for courts to move on matters that the American public already know in their hearts is a sucker move.
