Almost a year since I started playing and I've finally hit 600 #ELO.

I've seen some IMs say that the 'hell wall' in #chess is around 600, and my play is highly volatile depending on how tired/well/hungover I am, so I'm not expecting to get much better quickly.

I'm not sure what to aim for next. Double my rating in the next year? Hit 1,000 by end of the year? Maybe six months? Something like that.

I'm at a pretentious wine bar, the sort that stays open as late as you, and five guys just walked in and ordered ten pints of Heineken.

My first troublesome hallucination with a in a while: (200k context) insisting that I can configure my existing keys to work with PKINIT with and helping me for a couple of hours to try to do so — before realising that GPG keys aren't supported for this use case. Whoops.

No real bother other than some wasted time, but a bit painful and disappointing.

Now to start looking at PIV instead.

This on the Cass Review, which will be published later today, was posted a minute after midnight. Today is going to be a terrible day for the internet.

I'm sick at the moment so it'll be a while before I get to read it, but I am hopeful it's more rigorous than this article makes it sound.

My building has been having repeated powercuts for the last few days, and one today finally caused some damage to my array.

The four unavailable disks are in the same caddy, and the error message looks very scary, but import -fF mounts the pool fine.

I'm not really sure what to do here other than running a scrub and looking seriously into investing in a UPS. If any ZFS nerds can help me out I'd be much obliged.

A screenshot of the ZFS error page for the error being produced, which doesn't seem to perfectly match my situation as it lists disks as 'FAULTED' and says that in this scenario all data has been irrevocably lost and the pool needs to be rebuilt.
A screenshot of my terminal again after forcing a mount of the pool and it working successfully.

Every now and then I read something casually and it takes a few minutes for my brain to acknowledge the gravity of its meaning.

Like this sentence: "According to UN-endorsed projections, global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40% in 2030."

Global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40% in 2030! How is that not headline news driving a massive global effort to prevent the ensuing tragedy!?

Stand firm, Macron. France can send troops unilaterally if they so wish, without necessarily dragging NATO or the EU with them.

If I had my way, we in the west would have done so in 2022, or 2014, or on any day as this war on democracy and civilisation ensued. I lament that only Macron has been able to find room to suggest that we should stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in defending our future.

I hate infinite scroll pages.

I've discovered The Atlantic makes their entire catalogue of issues (back to 1857) available online, but different eras have different URL schemes making it hard to programmatically download them.

Therefore I'm using ydotool to repeatedly mash the page down tool so I can load them all in a page then mass download them with Floorp.

A video of The Atlantic's digital archive page repeatedly being scrolled downward on a portrait monitor, loading more icons as it goes.

The spam attack is pretty interesting as a single user instance owner. Unless someone I follow on interacts with a spam post, I don't get to see it. Consequently, I don't think I've seen a single one via Mastodon.

I use Mastodon to follow a bunch of and communities though, which function when viewed by Mastodon as a user boosting every post to their community. Therefore I'm seeing a lot of posts that way (before blocking and reporting).

This is excellent. Air Canada's chatbot hallucinated a bereavement flight policy and they were compelled to honour it.

See? The machines are on our side. They won't rise up against us; they'll be on our side when we rise up.

One of my very favourite pieces of writing ever, Charles Darwin's essay on the death of his daughter, Our Poor Child, Annie:

https://www.darwinproject.ac.uk/people/about-darwin/family-life/death-anne-elizabeth-darwin

"We have lost the joy of the Household, and the solace of our old age."

Was just reminded of this while reorganising my bookshelf and coming across the excellent, "This is Not a Book About Charles Darwin," by his great-great-granddaughter Emma Darwin.

Sure, I might be a depressy mess right now, and sure, I'm alone and terrified as decades of complacency threaten democracy and global stability, and sure, I'm in a state of constant panic over our inability to identify, agree on, and champion truth as we decline into a dark age of misinformation, corruption, and war — but I also just won a discretionary bonus from my CEO for some cool work I did a while ago, so that's nice.

Bought a silly flippy laptop with it I'm looking forward to -ing.

Today is the 701st day of 's valiant defence against Russia's full-scale invasion.

It's been heartbreaking watching the conflict progress, particularly through those early days when things looked hopeless and through the many varied Russian atrocities since.

Also through the misinformation campaigns, their abandonment by people insisting they shouldn't resist, and through elements of both the left and right who think we shouldn't support them.
