@GottaLaff That's interesting. Does that mean that the US can never renege on a treaty obligation?

That very much appeals to me after Tory disdain for our treaty obligations here in the wake of Brexit and the ECHR.

Every now and then I read something casually and it takes a few minutes for my brain to acknowledge the gravity of its meaning.

Like this sentence: "According to UN-endorsed projections, global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40% in 2030."

Global demand for fresh water will exceed supply by 40% in 2030! How is that not headline news driving a massive global effort to prevent the ensuing tragedy!?

Jimmy Wales of Wikipedia fame has been working on a reddit alternative called TrustCafe for a few years.

Strong focus on trust and accuracy rather than engagement and likes, with plans to support ActivityPub in the future.

My level of trust in non-fedi or -selfhosted solutions now is through the floor, but Jimmy Wales and the Wikimedia Foundation could appeal to me.

I've been avoiding this story for a few reasons, but yes, this is accurate and aligns to what I think.

The facing absurd attack from all sides because of the actions of one presenter that may not even be true, having been reported on in an extremely shady way by one of the worst rags in existence who everyone sane normally treats with extreme scepticism and hostility but suddenly is being treated uncritically.

Excellent! 🥳

Now all eyes on Orban the Terrible once again, as the last holdout — though he has said he wouldn't oppose Sweden's accession.

Stand firm, Macron. France can send troops unilaterally if they so wish, without necessarily dragging NATO or the EU with them.

If I had my way, we in the west would have done so in 2022, or 2014, or on any day as this war on democracy and civilisation ensued. I lament that only Macron has been able to find room to suggest that we should stand shoulder to shoulder with our Ukrainian brothers and sisters in defending our future.

Clip from the protest outside of the Bundeskanzleramt today in support of arming with Taurus cruise missiles.

The German response to the conflict has been weirdly mixed, but Scholz is on point lately — and I'm very glad to see the protest movement supporting Ukraine there hasn't died down.

Taurus is roughly equivalent to the Storm Shadows we supply, and Germany has a similarly-sized and similarly-aging stockpile to us — but so far none have been sent.

A video of protestors outside the Bundeskanzleramt in support of Ukraine. Many Ukrainian flags and supportive placards are present, and the crowd is chanting, "Taurus," referencing the German cruise missile that Germany has so far not supplied to Ukraine.

One of my very favourite pieces of writing ever, Charles Darwin's essay on the death of his daughter, Our Poor Child, Annie:

https://www.darwinproject.ac.uk/people/about-darwin/family-life/death-anne-elizabeth-darwin

"We have lost the joy of the Household, and the solace of our old age."

Was just reminded of this while reorganising my bookshelf and coming across the excellent, "This is Not a Book About Charles Darwin," by his great-great-granddaughter Emma Darwin.

This on the Cass Review, which will be published later today, was posted a minute after midnight. Today is going to be a terrible day for the internet.

I'm sick at the moment so it'll be a while before I get to read it, but I am hopeful it's more rigorous than this article makes it sound.

'The woman said the Cass report represented “an agenda from up on high that things need to be more difficult”. “It’s hard enough as a parent without having the entire society or media pointing at transgender people as if they’re some aberration or as if they threaten us.”'

Today is the 701st day of 's valiant defence against Russia's full-scale invasion.

It's been heartbreaking watching the conflict progress, particularly through those early days when things looked hopeless and through the many varied Russian atrocities since.

Also through the misinformation campaigns, their abandonment by people insisting they shouldn't resist, and through elements of both the left and right who think we shouldn't support them.

See? The machines are on our side. They won't rise up against us; they'll be on our side when we rise up.

Sure, I might be a depressy mess right now, and sure, I'm alone and terrified as decades of complacency threaten democracy and global stability, and sure, I'm in a state of constant panic over our inability to identify, agree on, and champion truth as we decline into a dark age of misinformation, corruption, and war — but I also just won a discretionary bonus from my CEO for some cool work I did a while ago, so that's nice.

Bought a silly flippy laptop with it I'm looking forward to -ing.

I ended up getting the Lenovo Yoga 7i.

supported everything out of the box. Had a lot of fun getting all the tablet rotation, gestures, and on-screen keyboard working with . Rot8 for rotation, lisgd for gestures, squeekboard as keyboard, nwggrid as a launcher, and some minor libinput config got me there.

Sway might seem an odd choice as a minimalist tiling window manager, but its tabbed and stacked modes really suit the tablet use case where you generally want your apps fullscreen.

Some of the stark examples where 'Zionist' is positioned in place of 'Jew' are barely believable.
