despite the last 500 years or so of european history being presented to us as some kind of renaissance, we're actually living within the ideas and constructs created by 500+ years of white men who used systems of violence to make servants out of everyone else while they invented things and thought about stuff.

yes other types of humans have managed to contribute essential ideas and inventions despite all this, but understand that we are barely breaking out of this intellectual man desert

    mastodon definitely has rapid boosting culture, which is also an easy way for mistakes or rumors to spread quickly. good to keep fact-checking in mind when we boost eachother

    a really wild thing right now is that Bluesky has no clear moderation policy in practice, is under no pressure to make one, and does not have a reliable mechanism for users to report things to admins.

    even wilder is that a great deal of bluesky's power users are so biased against fedi that they will plug their ears and start yelling if you try to mention that millions of us enjoy functional moderation over here

    its such a lesson to me in the need to always be challenging our own assumptions

    one thing that might help is some current & fact-based journalism about racism across the post-twitter diaspora, what we're all learning about moderation by having to figure it out ourselves, and how things are changing (or not) as various platforms/ servers evolve.

    people forget that we're exploring extremely dynamic systems right now. and in rapidly changing systems, the stories we tell & amplify have a lot of power to break new ground, or sadly, to keep us spinning in negative feedback loops

    what I really want to keep telling bluesky is you guys could just start a fediverse server, pay someone to develop quote tweet capacity and set your own moderation how you like it and be up and running in like a week 😆

    no need to keep begging Jack’s crypto devs to create moderation they seem to be opaquely but firmly opposed to

    One of mastodon’s core challenges is its track record and reputation on racism and anti-Black behavior. And if we as a new community here are not part of the solution I’m afraid we’ll be part of the problem. So I’m hoping we can show some solidarity with Black leaders on here, and also work on mutual aid for Alaska Native and BIPOC in AK as we grow 💞

    imo the emphasis right now should be on building a durable and resilient nonprofit network for essential global communications at the popular level.

    our weakness is that as servers grow they become expensive and time consuming to manage and people burn out.

    we should be making small server management easier, and recruiting existing nonprofit orgs with resources to join and run servers. we can solve our problems without working with evil corporations, but we have to make that choice

    @Danielmorgan it’s interesting because there is a path to maintaining our autonomy and continuing to solve our problems, we just have to decide to take that path. websites like Craigslist and Wikipedia and others have maintained relevance and function for decades now without selling out, it is possible

    Obviously if every admin of a larger mastodon server refused to sign an NDA or meet under terms of secrecy, we’d know a lot more and/or have more leverage over terms. let’s not confuse the likeability of corporate staff with the track record and pattern of the corporation itself, which has been by all accounts rapacious, Republican, coercive, too big to regulate, unethical, unaccountable, and responsible for propagating major acts of death and destruction

    i am sub tooting a bizarre phone call i just had with someone i serve on a public board with. they wanted to let me know that my mild and diplomatic input on our agenda was a sign of my overall bad character and that no one likes me. ugh. even when you know someone is 100% full of shit it is still no fun to get random unsolicited psychological feedback on your public persona
