Flashback to the time when I bumped into a hotel worker in a hallway and they asked me if I’d like some water and I said “sure!” and they handed me a CASE OF WATER for our two-night stay.

I am not open to your ahistorical take on Google Chat and XMPP.

Google didn't do anything wrong by using an open standard.

They didn't do anything wrong by building a good interface that people liked to use.

And they didn't do anything wrong by disconnecting from the network when the spam and harassment outweighed the benefit to their users.

We, the XMPP community, failed to capitalize on success by diversifying the network. It's our own fault not enough nodes were there.

@evan I appreciate this framing. Hard to know what makes sense with such strong opinions.

@dansup and Total users. I would love to add a chart to my bot @mastodon_daily_active_users to post an hourly graph of that. 🙏

I just assume bean dad rules over all of Threads.

stefan,
@stefan@gardenstate.social avatar

@jkohlmann lol. I was thinking who else could have launched Threads and Linkedin was totally who I thought of. They also own a social network of mine that does map to who I liked on twitter.

So we going to get boost with comment before meta launches threads in to federation?

Agree with this piece on IG’s Threads and why it can never truly replicate the magic Twitter once had https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/06/threads-wont-be-fun-but-it-will-give-brands-a-home-away-from-twitter/?guccounter=1

@taylorlorenz as a small user on threads I've gotten almost no interaction. It's wild to how hard I tried day one and how little reward from others. The algorithm ate everything from small users.

@taylorlorenz wow image 2 is brutal but does ring true.

atomicpoet, (edited ) to threads
@atomicpoet@atomicpoet.org avatar

From the start, I had a strong feeling that would experience instant success. I've been saying that it wouldn't be or that brings down . Instead, it was clear to me that would be the one to dismantle Twitter completely.

Why am I so confident about this? Well, it's because holds a monopoly over the social connections of billions of people. The specific features or user interface of Threads don't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Ultimately, it all comes down to the social connections, and knows exactly how to exploit that.

Now, what about privacy concerns? Surprisingly, the majority of people don't seem to care much about it. Even after being warned for 20 years about 's poor approach to privacy, most people continue to use their services without hesitation.

And what about 's problematic moderation policies? It's the same story. The majority of people are willing to endure various issues if it means they can stay connected with their loved ones.

But does this mean it's game over for the alternative non-Meta platforms like , , , , etc.?

Not at all. There's one thing that can't control: slip-ups. Just like other big tech companies, will inevitably make mistakes. Threads will have its fair share of critics, just as , , and do.

So where will those critics turn to? Well, if you've been keeping an eye on Twitter and , it's likely that they will flock to the Fediverse. The Fediverse offers something no other service can: it cannot be owned by anyone.

Now, some people believe that once you start using 's services, you'll never leave. But that's not necessarily true. People often realize they need something different when the time comes. And when people understand that they don't want their online lives to be owned as 's intellectual property, they will seek out a solution.

Spoiler alert: the only viable solution that truly ensures ownership over your online life is the -enabled Fediverse. This technology allows you to set up your own server within minutes, connecting you with millions of people, just like I did with atomicpoet.org.

Sure, billions of people might eventually join Threads. However, there will always be individuals who realize they'd rather not be under the control of Mark Zuckerberg. And for that reason, there will always be a demand for genuine online freedom on their own Fediverse server.

stefan,
@stefan@gardenstate.social avatar

@atomicpoet also makes sense to me even more why kids are the ones to crown new social networks... they have no legacy social network to cling to.

@paul the severance NDA could outline that. Unclear if a court would agree that is legal.

As a service to the fediverse let me know if no one has posted to your timeline line in the last 30 seconds and I will send you some MrBeast posts.

rolle, to mastodon
@rolle@mementomori.social avatar

I was looking for a reply in a post earlier this year but then found it's gone. This is kinda a downside, I wish old replies could be re-fetched, never thought it's "impossible to undo".

It could work in a way it would backfill the replies once the post is accessed, but tech-wise I understand if it's not possible.

Question for admins: Are you doing something to circumvent this?

stefan,
@stefan@gardenstate.social avatar

@rolle Would love to hear more folks talk about this and what different best case scenarios could be.

stefan,
@stefan@gardenstate.social avatar

@rolle totally. Refetch is hard because you would have to ask every mastodon server. Maybe a soft delete would remove the contents but point to where to get it.

stefan,
@stefan@gardenstate.social avatar

@rolle that sounds weird indeed
