The most useful invention I've ever run across... Corsi-Rosenthal box.

I have used this so far for:

  1. Wildfire smoke
  2. COVID-19
  3. Bacon smoke (on Saturdays, LOL)
  4. General improvement of AQI
  5. Pet related allergies (hay and dander)
  6. Ragweed/pollen heavy days
  7. Dust from Santa Ana winds
  8. Dust from construction/remodeling
  9. Paint fumes (only partially useful, doesn't absorb gases, but helps somewhat) -- plus it sucks all the dust from the air, so it doesn't stick to your paint

(probably other uses, too...)

@suuuuconk@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr the subdivision I live in built in 1965, all had these pipes. They collapsed or roots grew through them. Always having plumbing blockage problems. I think everyone has replaced them by now, usually before redoing their front landscape

Oh look, I've been ignoring a plentiful, edible food source in my garden! 🤔 "Land Shrimp!"

As I suspected, we're stalled out (now one week delay, unclear how much longer) in our disaster remodeling because the contractor failed to order the carpet early enough. In chess, we would call them a one-move-ahead player (ie only able to look at the move they are on), versus a 3-4 move ahead player (anticipating possible issues/problems ahead of time).

I made another attempt to get out on my motorcycle yesterday. I pulled out my leather jacket and helmet, when I realized I needed to change my license plate. I had just gotten a new Veteran's plate a couple of months ago. It was one of those things that I didn't bother with while I was working. Well ... I've looked everywhere and the darn thing just vanished along with the new and old registrations ... poof. I finally went down to the DNV to get a new one and they didn't have any of that kind of plate left and were just placing an order.

When I was a kid, I used to call the Leaning Tower of Pisa: The Leaning Tower of Pizza. I know I'm not the only one. My wife and I went there once and I probably have some old photos somewhere, but they are 35mm and I'd have to scan them to make them digital, but first I'd have to find them. I do have a miniature Leaning Tower that we bought as a souvenir. It sits on the top shelf of my desk, and glancing at it started this train of thought. That was a long time ago. I don't know if we really realized at the time that we were creating memories that would be with us the rest of our lives.

When I was a teenager in the 60s, I would sometimes hitchhike, which was incredibly reckless when I think back on those days. Now days, I occasionally see somebody else doing the same thing. It seems riskier than ever to hitchhike or pickup somebody who is hitchhiking. Granted we all take risks from time to time to get things done, but why take unnecessary risks. There is a reason we tell our children not to talk to strangers.

Hmmm ... more coffee.

Now I know why I was hearing complaints every winter about the cost of heating this house where I am staying. They expanded a kitchen and family room area some years back "it looks fabulous!" and it appears there is no insulation in the entire addition. Not an easy fix, IMHO -- would require drilling holes in every wall and blowing in cellulose. Would be better to do it from the outside, but the walls are stucco, so would have to be from inside (which would be messy, but then only require drywall patching and paint).

suuuuconk,
@suuuuconk@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr @dougfir DO NOT DO THIS!! we had hundreds of holes drilled in our stucco and paneling - NO insulation in the 1965 yr old house - to blow in shredded newspaper insulation. They plugged the holes with cork which looked good for a LITTLE while until they all started popping out. Had to restucco and repanel our whole house

Huh, BBC says 64F (18C) is the "recommended minimum" healthy indoor temperature?!? We usually set things to 62F here (and wear more clothing)--and often let it drift down to 58F or colder overnight. I'd be wearing a t-shirt and shorts in a British household, I think!!! https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240115-low-cost-heating-hacks-how-to-make-your-home-stay-warmer-for-longer

The coffee is on the weak side this morning. 😴

I went outside a while ago looking for the moon, but it's not there ... well it's there ... I just couldn't see it because clouds covered the sky. It is supposed to rain today.

Do you remember retread tires? I think you can still get recaps, though I don't buy them anymore. Back in the day though, it was all I could afford and there were times when I would buy one tire. Now days, except for special circumstances when I replace tires, I replace all of them. An area where recaps are still very prevalent, is commercial trucking, because truck tires are so expensive. That is why you see truck treads all over the highways.

Personal plumbing disaster (busted pipe on the second floor) blessings and lessons (so far, send tips):

  1. Blessing/lesson: the pipe broke in the second floor, but did NOT get all the computers below (amazingly). Except a couple of Toughbooks got wet, but they should be fine, lol. Could have been bad. Need to make sure to put equipment off the ground and (probably) with some kind of cover on top or in a cabinet.
  2. Pull the pictures off the wall before they start peeling themselves off by themselves.
  3. Need a secondary ad blocker/pihole installed elsewhere, was out of commission because I had to run the machine out of the dripping room.
  4. Sleeping with blowers/dehydrators, impossible.
