ai6yr,

The most useful invention I've ever run across... Corsi-Rosenthal box.

I have used this so far for:

  1. Wildfire smoke
  2. COVID-19
  3. Bacon smoke (on Saturdays, LOL)
  4. General improvement of AQI
  5. Pet related allergies (hay and dander)
  6. Ragweed/pollen heavy days
  7. Dust from Santa Ana winds
  8. Dust from construction/remodeling
  9. Paint fumes (only partially useful, doesn't absorb gases, but helps somewhat) -- plus it sucks all the dust from the air, so it doesn't stick to your paint

(probably other uses, too...)

@ai6yr

Alternate idea on tape.

I use 2" painters. Cheaper in bulk, unless you are using really crappy duct/duck tape.

Bonus: when time to change filters - peels off cleanly.

--
I know that I will always have at least 1 unit now... so I've been musing about how to set up something without using the tape... say a framework to put the filters into - that supports the fan and maintains a seal.

Someway to make it look like furniture would be kind of cool.

@JohnJBurnsIII @ai6yr Great idea about the tape. And what about a frame made from 2” corner molding, at least for the sides. Not sure about the top but use something to make a tray the fan could sit on. Now I’m looking at my wood scraps…

ai6yr,

@suuuuconk @JohnJBurnsIII Mine either ended up being painter's tape or packing tape. We usually have a lot of packing tape around, and it's fairly easy to disassemble with a pocketknife.

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@ai6yr @suuuuconk

Multiple layers of "leave-beind" tape on fan.

Even with painter tape I could do the same. But I leave each end folded over on itself... so grab tab and pull.

Only issue area is bottom having to work around power cord.

@JohnJBurnsIII @ai6yr

velcro strips?
if you do all 4 sides alternate the hook/loop sides

JohnJBurnsIII,
@JohnJBurnsIII@kzoo.to avatar

@MsMerope @ai6yr

You lose half the velcro at filter replacement.

Also velcro is not sealed... soi it would allow air transfer.

@ai6yr Good for sucking up fumes from 3D printers too :blobfoxwink:

They rock! For all those reasons!

And especially with
season predicted to be worse than ever this summer.

@ai6yr
I used the directions you posted to live through a Santa Ana wind driven wildfire. We had to keep the windows closed. It helped a lot.

ai6yr,

@EugestShirley Glad it's been useful, I love those things!

@ai6yr
Yes. My mother had had a heart attack, was recovering at home, but kept telling caretakers to open the windows. 🔥 💨
She hated stifling still air, and was under medication where she could not understand why we couldn't open windows or turn on the heat-exchange.
I turned her box fan into a Corsi-Rosenthal filter, and everybody lived.

@ai6yr "bacon smoke" 🤣

@ai6yr Saturday bacon smoke 🤣🤣🤣

ai6yr,

@rolandelli AQI exceeds that of nearby wildfires, LOL (really! Smells good but not good for your lungs)

@ai6yr I used mine when I decided to try using the self-cleaning function on the "new" stove that had been sitting in my landlord's garage for an unknown amount of time.

@ai6yr I wonder if I could make a miniature one to help deal with CA glue fumes, but I’ll prob open a window and use a table fan

kateiacy,

@swart @ai6yr Yes! I have made several configurations of different sizes. 10x10x2 filters work with 9-inch fans or a pair of PC fans. https://www.texairfilters.com/corsi-rosenthal-box-modular-mini-small-quiet-and-effective/ For an even smaller one, you can use a single PC fan and 5x5 inch filters. https://www.texairfilters.com/enjoy-clean-air-while-you-drive-with-the-mini-mini-corsi-rosenthal-box/ You'd need to add a sheet of carbon filter over each filter for fumes.

ClimateJenny,
@ClimateJenny@mastodon.social avatar

@kateiacy @swart @ai6yr FWIW, as of two weeks ago, Costco had four-packs of nice-quality 20x20 filters at a good price.

ai6yr,

@ClimateJenny @kateiacy @swart Great to know! The local big box stores here sell MERV13 equivalents cheap in bulk, and for awhile they were clearing them out (should have purchased more.... back when the "pandemic was over" but not really in 2021 -- got four 3M MERV13 for only $8 each)

ai6yr,

@swart For sure. For glue fumes I'd also add carbon filters. I have considered building a small one to help with solder smoke...

swart,
@swart@mastodon.cloud avatar

@ai6yr oh yeah my son is (still) annoyed that I still use lead-based solder (it’s fine)

ai6yr,

@swart The lead based solder is a lot easier to deal with, I agree. The non-leaded stuff drives me crazy, but that's probably because I don't have the technique down or the right flux....

moira, (edited )
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@ai6yr @swart S'funny, having literally always used lead-free, I find the leaded solder kind of annoying.

(In part because of the inconsistency with more modern soldiers, but also in part because I have to fire up my filter kit and work close to it. As a solder it's fine I guess, but not better.)

colo_lee,
@colo_lee@zirk.us avatar

@ai6yr We've built and used them in the spaces we rent for tai chi classes. Have to renew the filters each year when we come back inside in the fall. The new normal....

ai6yr,

@colo_lee They are wonderful. Wouldn't be necessary with better air exchange rates in buildings, which SOME folks were working on -- but unclear and non-obvious to me what buildings are and aren't up to spec.

USelaine,
@USelaine@mastodon.online avatar

@ai6yr
I remember you saying the contractors used something called an air scrubber, months ago. Does that get the gasses?

ai6yr,

@USelaine With a carbon filter, it does.

@ai6yr Endless irony in this being hosted on UC Davis' site and part-invented by a UC Davis prof/admin...given how UC Davis has handled this ongoing pandemic.
