Frustrating start to the day. The Lancet puts out a study saying one in three women are likely to experience long-term health problems caused by childbirth. MedicalXpress publishes a press release (https://medicalxpress.com/news/2023-12-women-health-problems-birth.html).

None of the wires cover it — not Reuters, not AFP, not AP, not Bloomberg.

One in three women is (roughly) one on six members of the human race. No news agency thinks long-term health issues affecting one in six people matter.

tokyo_0,

@kkarhan Yes, long covid hasn't been an issue for the same length of time but it's the same problem, the same mechanisms at play. At each level there are people making decisions about what audiences might want to read, and therefore what audiences get to read. There's nowhere near enough scrutiny on how those decisions are made and the structural issues that prevent improvements.

All basics are now luxuries. A home, rent, healthcare, a livable salary, vision care, dental care, basic human rights.

@StillIRise1963 Sooner or later folks need to learn they're going to keep getting what they keep putting up with.

Since Hachyderm is happy to federate with the host of Libs of TikTok, Gays Against Groomers and other wildly violent transphobic accounts, I need to move.

Recommendations for an instance where I can share my code projects, AWS stuff, photography, blog, etc with a real policy against federating hate speech?

tokyo_0,

@cariad Is tech.lgbt of interest? I think I saw a post in the last week or so recommending the instance and saying they would defederate Threads. It's the instance used by the person who put the fedipact together as well.

Registration for PyCon US 2024 is now open. I registered and will be there from Thursday to Sunday.

My trip this year will be shorter than normal because the ridiculous mask policy put in place by @ThePSF.

Still looking forward to seeing you all there. :)

tokyo_0,

@ThePSF Thank you for supporting masking. It's an important health protocol that protects vulnerable people during an ongoing pandemic the true harms of which have yet to be fully understood even in medicine, let alone the general public. It also makes your events accessible for people who themselves are vulnerable or who need to shield vulnerable family and friends. Criticising common-sense masking is selfish, dangerous and exclusionary.

“ 'We suddenly went from like three registrations per minute to 900 a minute,' Chaput said. 'There was nothing in the Mastodon software to detect that activity, and the protocol is not designed to handle this.' ”

That does indeed correspond to the lack of foresight I've seen myself from the Mastodon devs. Sure, what I've built recently is massively lacking in polish and even badly needed functionality, but if I'd been working on it full time for 6+ years... smh

Yes, this Is what the "embrace" part looks like. It will all be very impressive, very well- resourced, very stable. In fact, it'll be even better than Mastodon was to begin with.

Why is embrace, extend, extinguish used? Because it works. Because people fall for it over and over again. Because of human nature... because of how often self-interest wins.

You can see it right now. You're watching the next case study.

Meta really got their army of shills ready, didn't they. And their army of useful idiots, too.

Surely the reckoning — for those who exploit their position and privilege, for those who profit and feather their nests at such great cost to others, for those who think nothing of operating unreasonably — has to come soon.

Surely.

What I used to think of as success:

  • a nice car
  • nice clothes
  • a job people respect
  • a good degree/education from a reputable institution
  • a gym membership
  • a plush, well-furnished home
  • status
  • money
  • "lifestyle"
  • approval
  • things people can see
  • things that make it hard for anyone to say you are not successful

How can someone be well intentioned and genuinely horrified at the idea of hurting people around them, but at the same time oblivious to how social groups function and how their actions will be received?

How do those two things coexist in a person?

Oh my god I've seen more news coverage of this submersible in 24 hours than I have about drowning migrants in the past year.

Depressing thing I've noticed with hashtags is that certain outlets seem to think it's fine to set up automated posting and tag the hashtag in every post.

Soon it totally kills the hashtag. When I arrived last November, MastIndia was a particularly vibrant space with people posting introductions and sharing ideas. Now it seems to be filled with so much automated crap there's little hope of finding anyone.

Wonder what can be done about this community-destroying scourge 🤔

Every time I check the #India #election results, the #NDA seat projection keeps dropping. Now 286. Is it possible they don't get a majority?

tokyo_0,

@ncoca Have been wondering about that, too. Anything seems possible right now 🤔 That the BJP won't have one by themselves is already bad enough from their perspective.

customers are now expected to consent to retention and disclosure to partners of facial information for up to a year simply to continue using their accounts, and even when not required by local financial regulations.

Here's the U.S. notice: https://wise.com/us/legal/facial-scan-notice

tokyo_0,

@ncoca Glad it helped. I was just looking for an option to do that (the U.S. page I linked says there's a setting, but in my account I can't find one). I've written to their privacy team asking for details of the alternative method, and stating clearly that I do not consent to use or retention of biometric data.

tokyo_0,

@ncoca I recently signed up here with Sony Bank and that was quite smooth. I think anyone with 6 months left on their long-term visa can do that. Signup is all via an app, the usual documents, but you don't need to send a selfie. They don't do all the interbank transfer options you have with Wise but the VISA card seems to work fine for international transactions and you can hold funds in major currencies within the account.

Last few hours of weekend slipping away and am reminded of that girl who went viral recently on TikTok for saying she didn't know how people were supposed to work full time and live decently as well. You're not supposed to. The idea isn't for you to live well. It's for you to give all your energy to people who will use you for profit, spend all your money to make yourself feel better, and die quickly when you're no longer of use or value to commercial interests. The system isn't built for you.
