I was asked what the first movie that ever scared me was.

It's impossible for me to say. Go far enough back and memories of movies blur into a single thing.

I can say it was black and white and had Peter Cushing in it.

toychicken,

@selzero This. Bizarrely, this series of movies had Sherlock Holmes fighting Nazis (always a good choice) but this one in particular gave me the absolute creeping willies and I had nightmares for weeks. I was probably about 7 when I saw it (1980)

I’d vote for a hyena in an Aran jumper if it was running against Trump in the USA or the Tories in the UK.

Complaining about Biden or Starmer because they are not your ideal candidate given the alternatives, just baffles me.

Either will be better than Trump or the Tories for another 4 years.

toychicken,

@ianRobinson I understand the arguments for and against here, but what if you think that Labour are literally no different to the Tories? I struggle to see anything to distinguish them from one another. It's not Praxis if you just keep moving your chess piece backwards and forwards between two squares.

I used to run the dishwasher when I ran out of spoons. I finally bought 6 more spoons, and now I go days longer without running the dishwasher.

I'm saving time, energy, and water every week because I bought 6 spoons. I can't believe it took me years to think of it!

Look for your version of "spoons."

toychicken,

@grammargirl I used to get so angry with my daughter for not putting her lunch box in the dishwasher in time for the overnight wash, ready for the next day.

Reader, I bought another lunchbox.

Today’s ear worm is “Just Be Good To Me” by the SOS Band and for the life of me I can’t find a regular single or album version on Apple Music or Spotify

toychicken,

@machias is this not it? I have the same on cassette from (yikes) 40 years ago, and it sounds like same cut

You're right about missing stuff though 😁 I have a Nu Shooz track somewhere on vinyl that I can't find on Spotify... Possibly not the greatest loss 😂

What are your thoughts on blog posts published as threaded toots on Mastodon?

toychicken,

@Daojoan Mastodon handles threads really badly. I find it really frustrating to see the end, or part of a conversation when I'm scrolling through my timeline, only to find the OP further down my timeline.
For example, you post:

Not only does it suck with structured content, but it ruins jokes too.

toychicken,

@Daojoan I like the 12x system, where no one can earn more in a month than someone else's yearly salary. I've heard of it being implemented within businesses but could be interesting at a national scale. Watch the minimum wage go up sharpish!

All earnings over threshold is taxed at 100%

Does anyone have communities of practice at work with regular meetings? We have a (remote) monthly web dev catch up which I’d like to use for showcasing what’s going on in web around the company and also in the world of web more generally, but right now it feels a little too “Ms Koonin’s Compulsory Class Sharing Time”. Obvs people who don’t want to share/speak don’t have to, but any tips for things that have worked?

toychicken,

@sophie Some options I've tried, with varying success.

  • Reach out to other similar communities (as you have) but see if you can do a bit of an 'exchange programme' Devs from your work visit others, others visit yours.
  • Broaden the scope of the audience and invite 'non devs' to engage.
  • Extend the subject scope and encourage folks to talk about non-dev interests.
  • Have some 'lightning' talks - Pecha Kucha is a nice format - it can help people to have a predefined structure to prepare.
toychicken,

@dgerard I mean, god forbid VCs did even the most basic due diligence. No, we'll use AI to tell if this good news is true or not!

Ok, Internet, let's start asking the important questions:

Who is the "Dennis Hopper Is King Koopa" of this upcoming Legend Of Zelda movie?

Make your case.

toychicken,

@mhoye this is tricky... Finding that sweet sweet balance between genius casting, and WTAF.

I'm going full Brit-cast here...

Impah - Olivia Coleman
Link - Tom Holland*
Ganandorf - Tom Hardy (full Bane mode)
Beedle - McKenzie Crook
Sidon - Paddy Considine
Purah - Anya Taylor-Joy

  • Strictly non-verbal.

I await my call from Nina Gold...

The worsening climate crisis means some tech bro is 100% going to “invent” the parasol again.

It’s gonna cost $1000 and every dude who microdoses will have one instead of just buying a fucking umbrella

toychicken,

@Daojoan Let me present XrAIn. A vertical, handheld column, made from organic materials* with a rotating laser on the top that uses quantum computing to predict the position of raindrops in advance so can accurately target them as they fall. Sure we still have to find a way to account for the position of the user, and the physical size of the quantum computer, but yeah, I need $6bazillion please.

Everything wrong with tech in 2023 (in no particular order)

  1. The obsession with short-term profits severely undermines long-term positive impact.

  2. The lack of diversity among founders and investors propagates harmful exclusion.

  3. The prevalence of poor work-life balance and burnout culture is inhumane and unsustainable.

  4. Too many products optimized for addiction show callous disregard for user well-being.

…And more.

The Negative Impact of Mobile-First Web Design on Desktop

https://www.nngroup.com/articles/content-dispersion/

“We conducted 13 qualitative usability tests. We looked at two types of layouts (condensed and dispersed) on two different types of web pages (homepage and product page), for a total of four different prototypes corresponding to all combinations of these variables.”

toychicken,

@assaf I'm so glad someone has finally articulated what has been itching my brain for a while.
Mobile first design isn't a panacea for responsiveness woes.
Put the work in folks, use the tools we have available, and make great sites that work for everyone.
NB This is not carte blanche to go back to the bad old days of desktop first or adaptive web.

I love this quote from @pluralistic because it reminds me of me - we're both of the generation which was convinced that there was literally no future, because nuclear war was certain to happen before we got old.

https://www.newyorker.com/culture/the-new-yorker-interview/cory-doctorow-wants-you-to-know-what-computers-can-and-cant-do?utm_source=pocket_saves

toychicken,

@cstross @JonSparks @alexanderdyas @ianbetteridge @pluralistic Was going to invoke Threads on this, err, thread. Also, growing up in Leeds, we had this helpful pamphlet to visualise exactly how we'd die.
My mates and I worked out that if we heard the sirens, we'd have enough time to run into the blast zone, so we'd burn, rather than die of radiation poisoning.
Not a great feeling when you're 12.
Sorry. Did you say PTSD? Perhaps.
You can download it here...

toychicken,

@cstross @JonSparks @alexanderdyas @ianbetteridge @pluralistic Yep, me too. Lived in Woodhouse, school was City of Leeds (now council offices I think)
I always thought the town hall seemed like an odd choice of target. Perhaps the university might've been an option?
I read a discussion with the guy who wrote it, and he was really keen to be as objective as possible about it. Leeds council also wrote to the leaders of US and USSR to encourage nuclear disarmament!

I've been asked by a digital publication to do a regular column on forgotten or overlooked bits of tech and business history that changed stuff forever.

So what's your favourite weird nugget of obscure history or people in tech or business?

This is LITERALLY your chance to make me write about it 😄

toychicken,

@garius BBC micro! Invented by Acorn, took the UK education sector by storm, then Acorn morphed into Acorn RISC machines, now somewhat better known as ARM
(For pedants, I know this is a very simplified timeline)
ARM chips now in the majority of mobile tech I think.
