As a lifelong pedant there’s one upside of Tesla laying off 10% of its workforce—the accurate use of “decimate”. https://boingboing.net/2024/04/15/tesla-decimates-global-workforce-rumors-suggest-numbers-much-higher.html

@overholt @rysiek hate to compete with you on pedanticism, but wouldn't they have to lay off 90%?

    @thestrangelet I'm hoping for a serious answer, but yes I get that the Left value empathy most and therefore must reject many conservative values such as loyalty. The question is not, why are conservatives offended by the Liberal rejection of their values, but what Liberal actions actually disgest them.
    (I have recently learned of the existence of the emotion, "elevation" discovered in positive psychology research to oppose the commonly known emotion, disgust.)

    If you see someone in need receiving public assistance, and your first thought is that you have to work hard and don't understand why you have to have your earnings taxed and used on people nobody cares about anyway and who should have made better decisions in life ...

    ... then you are a genuinely horrible person and I don't want to know you.

    Neither Vision Pro nor Humane's Ai Pin are 'the future’, but they’re both showcasing aspects that will /become/ the future. A pair of glasses, running an OS like visionOS, with advanced multimodal AI smarts. That's the next product that can truly change the world, something anybody and everybody can wear all day every day, and give the smartphone a run for its money; what we have now are science projects — really cool science projects — but science projects nonetheless

    @stroughtonsmith @blaise Rabbit looked like better designed software to me, though I like the pin form. Humane's AI Pin obviously needs tactile buttons! It's a pin; you need to feel for the button and get tactile feedback from pressing it. Fck apple for making capacitive touch so popular. Calling all ers: please design a tactile button to dethrone capacitive buttons in hardware?

    The primary reason the "Australian tech sector" is whining about the proposed merger laws, is it would require that sector to start businesses with the intent to produce goods and services that people buy, generating revenue in excess of expenses, which would equate to profit.

    "Hang on Geordie that's how business works" I hear you say.

    Sweet summer child.

    Enormous swathes of the Australian start-up sector has no real interest in long term profitability through the legacy "making shit and selling it to people that want to buy it" method. The idea is to get a group of people to make a product and show that they can make a good product, then rather than deal with the machinations of getting them to buy it, handling support of it, producing new versions, features, etc. you instead toss your hair provocatively at a large tech company or established sector for acquisition.

    travisfw,
    @travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

    @mpesce @geordie nobody is mentioning the exit strategy here. That's the issue. The exit strategy is necesary for most startups to get funding, because investment is driven by ROI. Without either getting bought by a company or going public, the shares will never be worth anything. Is Australia trying to force corps to give dividends to their shareholders?

    Can't beat some good old classic Warhammer product photography. There's so much great stuff hidden away in vintage magazine PDFs, never to be rediscovered

    travisfw,

    @stroughtonsmith I never played Warhammer because war is so repulsive, but as an excuse to paint and collect and arrange figurines and pretend what they can do, I very much appreciate Warhammer's cultural impact.

    I suppose it's a dollhouse type thing for boys, now that I think about it.

    Sometimes I like James Clear. But sometimes I read his advice & burst out, "Bwha ha ha ha! Could you even IMAGINE if a woman tried to do that?!"

    It's stuff like "focus on just one thing that you truly want to accomplish at the absolute expense of everything else." Society would FALL APART!

    This post is clearly a truncated thought and there is a lot to hash out. The gist of the complicated part is women are socialized to take care of everything, not just the things they want for themselves

    Sure, recruiter person, I'll just fabricate experience and put it on my resume because you asked me to... /s

    I don't understand these people. Is this a normal thing to ask someone to do? Like, I already said my experience with this particular skill is minimal, so why ask me to put "3 to 4 points" on my resume specifically mentioning it? I'm so not comfortable with that.

    travisfw,
    @travisfw@fosstodon.org avatar

    @hosford42 It is better to think of HR as robots. They are very literal and leave everything that actually matters wrt the work to the humans.

    Reach out to someone in the company that you might likely interview with? If you credit the recruiter, they'll get their commission and won't mind you going over their head.
