My pastel sketch of during yesterday's . I wasn't there to see it in person this time, but I used the amazing photo shared by Tom Kerss (with permission) as a reference image. The looked so different yesterday than it did when we saw the 2017 eclipse because we were in solar minimum then and near solar maximum now. There were several lovely visible too

@MaryMcIntyreAstro nice work! It was absolutely stunning to see totality in person and this is a beautiful representation!

@MaryMcIntyreAstro the views were lovely, but the traffic was brutal! Totally worth it.

Classic New England spring. It has been sleeting/raining/snowing/icing for the past 24 hours while the early spring flowers go about their business in full bloom. Taken outside the town library with my Pixel 4a 5G.

Stress testing the battery I'm borrowing from my dad for imaging the eclipse. I'm feeling confident I can capture the partial aspects of the eclipse, but totality is a bit of a wildcard for me.

I'll be capturing 50-frame videos every 60 seconds from start to finish with the solar filter on. During totality, I'm thinking I'll just pull the solar filter off and run the video for the whole duration without fiddling so I can just enjoy it. I'll bring my DSLR to snap some images too.

I feel like I just accidentally invented the perfect gadget for doing daytime polar alignment.

I mean, I guarantee someone has done something like this. I just figured I would have to make a custom 3d printed mount, not literally attach two random things with a screw.

@malcircuit nice! I definitely have both of those things laying around too.

We finally got another break in the weather and jumped on it. Surface conditions were great with small waves and comfortable air temperatures, but once we got down, viz was just OK and there was significant surge. Maybe the weather is going to turn soon? Maybe? Please?

I presented some photos at our local Photo Society meeting last week! The theme was The Philippines, so we had several presenters show images from different places around the country.

The link starts off at the beginning of my presentation, but the other presenters also showed some awesome photos and techniques so definitely check out the rest of the video too. Enjoy!

@Brandi_Buchman would it be correct to say that the settlement is basically both sides drop all the legal action and get back to actually negotiating?

Throwing it back to my visit to Oslob in The Philiippines! This place was crazy with huge crowds and a long wait, but wow was it worth it. When it was our turn, we boarded a long boat and they paddled us out to take our place in the long line. I hopped over the side and in 3 seconds was nose to nose with a whale shark! SO FUN!

I wasn't planning to do any solar imaging yesterday, but I changed my mind once I saw what the sunspots were up to! That large sunspot region is cranking out solar flares at an impressive rate. Hopefully I'll get another chance to image on a clearer day before they disappear around the side.

It was not a good day for solar imaging, but I pointed my scope (with solar filter, of course) at the sun and waited for a break in the clouds. I finally got a bit of one and captured 2000 frames of video. Normally, I tell the software to pick the top 25%, but that stack had weird artifacts. Lowering to 5% produced a really nice image, which might be my favorite yet.

It's the time of year when widefield imagers like myself get extra jealous of those long scopes and ponder what to image until the big stuff pops back up. I captured this data in one session last year and never did anything with it. I decided I'd take a swing at processing it, complete with 2x drizzle, heavy crop, and some BlurX tossed at it.

Oh hey, it's my 10 year scubaversary! I got certified at Mosquito Pier in Vieques and then promptly did a night dive for my very first certified dive. Little did I realize, night dives would become my favorite diving! I also hit dive a couple weeks ago in Turks & Caicos. 🥳

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@Brandi_Buchman Thanks for the write-up! I've been trying to figure this out from reading the opinion and reporting - there's no suggestion about what Congress would do to enforce Section 3, right? Just that they would need to do something?

thomasfuchs, to random
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io avatar

The Supreme Court rules 9-0 that a dictatorship would be good actually to bring down polarization in public discourse (by outlawing public discourse)

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Letting random secretaries of state decide who participated in an insurrection seems also bad? That said, I don't understand how enforcement of Section 3 for federal officials would actually ever work. I guess Congress would have to pass a law with the process for how to disqualify someone for insurrection? That's certainly not gonna happen.

(To be crystal clear, Trump is awful and must never hold public office again)

Added some new friends to our saltwater tank this weekend! We added a turbo snail, a white sabae anemone, and a pygmy angelfish. I put the anemone on top of the rocks and so far it has enjoyed that spot. The pygmy angelfish has been pestered by the yellowtail damselfish we already had, but I think it has found a safe spot.

Anyone out there in my friendiverse have an LG front loading washer? Ours is throwing an "IE" error, which means that it's unable to fill the drum with water in a timely fashion. I believe my inlet valve needs to be replaced - it is filling the washer, but I suspect there's not as much water coming in as there should be. If someone could share a video of their functional washer filling, that would be greatly helpful!

(Instructions in the thread)

webcubus,
@webcubus@astrodon.social avatar

Instructions:

  1. Pull the detergent drawer out and push down the portion in the middle that says "Push" - this will let you pull the drawer totally out.
  2. Turn the machine on and select a mode that defaults to "Cold"
  3. Press the "Rinse + Spin" button
  4. Take a video of the water flow in through the open drawer compartment

Following the same procedure for any other brand of front loader could be helpful as well. Thanks in advance!
