Hey friends, does anyone know what either of these objects are?
(They were found in a deceased relative's jewelry box.)
Please boost for added eyes, thanks! 😊

The lettering on the object on the left says:
Hadley Made in USA
Both ends open up to 90⁰ and the main body expands and contracts about a centimetre.

A clever person has said that the object in the right is a Writescope telescoping mechanical pencil. Thanks!

I'm failing trying mitxela's trick of wrapping a wire around an ironbit for SMD soldering, any one got any ideas? This is a traditional 25W Antex iron it's wrapped on, but it's not getting hot enough on the wire, it boils off flux, melts low-melting point paste but doesn't do anything to existing components:

@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@penguin42
The wire is a bit thin, do you happen to have a ~1.5mm copper wire?

Those who write such pearls will not even understand what is wrong here.
These are the same ones who draw pictures of Trump against the backdrop of devastation - they do not realize that the shit they are in is the result of 4 years of rule by a completely different party😉

I just spent way too long photoshopping up a diagram for the 1 bit computer...

BUT IT WAS FUN!

yrabbit,

@RueNahcMohr

There was once such a simple program as Dia. But it didn’t know how to rotate an already installed primitive, which infuriated me a little🤣

A fully soldered board, three dozen wires later, worked from the first launch.
Not very surprising - I’m usually precise and methodical :) But I won’t show the other side, it’s very difficult to neatly solder all these wires.

Fully soldered player board plays C.C.Catch disc on CDROM drive

yrabbit,
@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

What's next? firmware? No!
Next I will design and print the enclosure for this thing. Well, because I haven’t printed in a while and because the last thing I want is to touch and damage one of this pile of wires🙃

yrabbit,
@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Enclosure will be simple, but I'll try something new: I've never used heat inserts before🙃
I just need to figure out what diameter the holes should be.

yrabbit,
@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@aeberbach
It turned out well!
Yes, I understand that usually these inserts are made on the other side, but I don’t really trust them yet, and in this way the mechanical strength increases many times over.

I'll have to sort out this drawing around the edges - apparently Linear Advance is playing pranks.

@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@aeberbach
Yes, you're right, it's an M3. Thanks, I'll try to design holes like this👍

yrabbit,
@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@aeberbach
The upper half of the player enclosure.
A disgrace, although readable.
I can't smudge the PLA well on the first layer (let's say a line width of 0.6) because then the letters become unreadable.
It's probably worth doing such things on the last layer.
Or change the nozzle to a smaller diameter.

The top half of the box with inscriptions. Lots of shortcomings.

and now Youtube teardown channels are getting remains of Russian missiles sent in by Ukrainians to tear down

This thing burned out after being unable to withstand a couple of CDROM activations - and it’s not like it was working with a laser and so on - I haven’t learned how to give such commands yet.
So now a 600W computer power supply is used.
Just a note - these little power supplies are a joke.

I don't mean Meanwell and Co - but it's hard to find a 5/12 combo model there

I have come to the conclusion that dealing with such gems is a highly inefficient waste of my time. I'd rather test and improve support for the chip series I have, and CMake-something will make someone smarter than me.

@yrabbit@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

PET-G is strong, but it lacks flexibility - snap fasteners made of it must be planned to work at an offset of less than 1 mm, otherwise these things just break off.😕

I could have used PLA, but... it's near the engine and the last thing I want is to get something melted.

I found a fresh Marlin for the Aquila printer, it's flashed and apparently works - that's good news.

However, turning on Linear Advance still makes the stepper motors squeak like an unlubricated cart, which is bad news.
