Where do you live and how do you feel about it?

Obviously, don't tell me exactly where you live, no actual addresses please! You can be as vague as you like.

I live in Central Missouri in the U.S.

Pros:

This is an absolutely beautiful place, green rolling hills, lots of rivers, lakes, ponds, and natural springs, cool caves to explore.

Lots of farming here, so great access to quality fruits, vegetables, meat, eggs, and dairy.

It's relatively inexpensive to live here compared with other states, because it's a "flyover".

I'm close enough to three major cities, that it's an easy day trip, and I'm about halfway to anywhere in the U.S.

We have one of the best Conservation departments in the U.S. and this is one of the few things that is a bipartisan issue. Lots of awesome nature programs that are free or cheap, state parks, conservation areas, bird watching, hunting, boating, foraging available to everyone.

Cons:

Yeah, it's a big one, it is a RED STATE, while a lot of the cities are blue, there is a large rural population, that votes red. Abortion is not legal here. People often vote against their own self interest.

While I'm not against responsible gun ownership, lots of people aren't responsible, and people have access to guns that definitely should not.

We have very few employee protections here, while the cost of living is relatively low compared with other places, it's taken years to get to a $12 minimum wage, and it's still not enough.

@RickiTarr I have lived all over but most recently fled Austin to Eugene Oregon and we absolutely love it here. Pros: absolutely beautiful, close to coast and hiking, not crowded, eclectic. Cons: little industry and wages are incredibly low, very expensive to fly out of. Lots of homeless and drug issues. We moved here for safety against red laws, but it’s rural and red encroaching. This is everywhere, I believe.

It is a mistake to treat any social media platform as a personal diary. Some thoughts should be kept for you - and you alone.

@Daojoan I love public diaries. I learned a lot from Anais Nin coming of age.

Every generation of kids wants to identify themselves in a new way, and yes, we've all been guilty of finding it funny or annoying, but the truth is we all did it. I'm happy for them that it's safer for them to really explore their identity, and sexuality in public, and not just little secret corners of the internet, or shadowy bars that people only whispered about. Maybe we are fine with words like Queer, Gay, or Ace, we fought for them to be fine, and maybe it feels strange that they would reject something so hard won. We should let them find their own identities though, it's what we wanted, right?! So, Cheers to all the new words and acronyms, I can never seem to keep up with, I hope each generation gets to be less scared to be themselves.

@RickiTarr isn’t it amazing how quickly we old ones forget? It’s so apparent to me the estrangement one seems to have for their younger selves even when they feel the same. I don’t understand it other than this: It’s slowly surrendering to the homogenizing forces and needing to protect oneself from the reality of this at all costs.

"Trump is worse!" And then I'm blocked.

People get so cranky at Black folk for pointing out the irrefutable evidence that Biden's Covid policies got a lot of people long Covid, and caused a lot of other people to die of Covid unnecessarily.

You can get mad at me. You can yell "Trump is worse!" until your voice gets hoarse. I'm not talking about Trump. I'm talking about pandemic decisions made during this administration.

Y'all know I'm right.

@mekkaokereke I don’t understand how people still think logical arguments work. If you are curious, if you are open… maybe. Also, I wish people would stop wanting ditto copies of themselves around them. We cannot agree on every single thing. It would be nice to have some sanity like ranked voting, then maybe this situation wouldn’t feel so dangerously fraught. I have a really bad feeling about this one.

It's strange to me when I see people get upset about people doing good deeds, and posting it online.

"They're just doing it for attention!"

Yeah, so what? I'd much rather see people doing nice things for attention, than the people who do mean pranks or wasting food. A good deed is still good, even if it's done for the wrong reasons.

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr there always has to be a term coined that everyone repeats ad nauseam like “virtue signaling”. I hate that one almost as much as I hate how “woke” got commandeered as a jeer.

mekkaokereke, (edited ) to random
@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io avatar

If Kendrick weren't rapping about insulting Drake, would you still be this interested?

Kendrick always raps like this. So why the sudden attention? Are you celebrating the lyrical skill? Or the fact that he's threatening another Black man's life?

What specifically are we celebrating?🤔

Everyone's celebrating "bars." I've been watching all day, haven't seen anyone talk about the bars where K Dot said he'd take the Draco to Drake. Or where he said he'd extort Drake next time he checks-in in LA.

@mekkaokereke I found my husband and 13 year old son talking about this battle this morning and was reminded of your post. So bringing it to the table. Thank you.

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke this fact is demonstrable to me and yet in my most recent experience on a jury panel, almost everyone questioned about police brutality said their biggest takeaway was that there is always more to the story than what is shown online. I was aghast at this. 2nd was about guns. But this is 2nd point which is tangentially connected. Because there is this irrational fear around “criminals” owning guns while “good citizens” not being able to protect themselves.

Have you tried peanut butter and cheese sandwiches? I’ve been eating them since I was a teenager, and got to wondering how common it is (I don't know anyone else that eats them).

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@Jaden3 if you are open to experiment, this is what I’ve been taught which sometimes help: What your mind wants is attention. It thinks it can help you solve something and it needs acknowledgement. So experiment with things to let it know you’ve heard it. Put the things in boxes that you “promise” to review in the morning and put them under your bed. Or something similar. Or invite everyone in for dinner and say “I’ve heard you, you are dismissed”…

My kid and their girlfriend moved in together. Movers overcharged by $500.00. Girlfriend called, left a message and didn’t hear back. She said she didn’t want to be “mean.” This morning, it was my kid’s turn. They left a polite and precise message at 8am explaining that the behavior of the company would force them to file a complaint with the AG’s office, BBB, their rep and they would stop payment on their credit card. They got a message within 30 minutes and refunded the $500.00. BE “MEAN."

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@StillIRise1963 assertive is the term that some people confuse with “mean”. Or they mostly assign that to women who are assertive.

Computers as tools for humans are so useful exactly because they can’t think and do tedious work like calculations or information storage and retrieval for humans in a deterministic way.

It took like nearly 90 years of digital computers to make them powerful enough to run a wasteful algorithm that pretends to think (but doesn’t) and to deliver bullshit non-deterministic results while using absurd amounts of computational and environmental resources.

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs I was having a conversation with someone who was amazed at AI’s ability to seemingly empathize with him and give him solutions to a personal problem. Why would I want a non-feeling machine to pretend to empathize with me?

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs I think that particular person was spreading hype and I’m sure there are a lot of people like you describe or who are desperately lonely who will benefit. But my question is why are we trying to replace what humans are best at with a machine. Like artistic expression and empathy. It’s so weird.

Okay, so last night I was on a date, and I asked hubs what he was up to at work, and he told me he learned Python, so he could write a program to help people troubleshoot computer problems on their own.

I ask him, "You're creating a program to replace yourself?"

Apparently, just the boring easy stuff he doesn't want to deal with, because he has better ideas about how he wants to use his time at work.

Is this what you smart people do all day?!

What is a little white lie you were told as a child, that you believed for too long?

Honest question for white people that don't consider themselves racist:

White nationalists have been vocal about their attacks on DEI. These are literally the same people that talk about Charlottesville, Jan 6th, and ethnic cleansing.

They've laid out exactly how they plan to destroy DEI.

  1. Make false claims that DEI is about giving unqualified Black people an unfair advantage

  2. Work with racist politicians to use this as a pretext to make all DEI programs illegal.

1/n

zannesan,
@zannesan@mastodon.social avatar

@mekkaokereke I am not employed at the moment and work for myself, but I’d be vocal if I was. My brothers who are republican do hold the belief they are somehow hurting because of DEI efforts. They both live in texas and Oklahoma. I have never understood this line of thought but it’s prevalent with white males especially in red states, unfortunately. Not speaking all, of course. I have many white male friends who do not think this way but they are fewer.

From a much broader perspective, I think more and more people are asking: “Are those who prioritize profit over people the ones we should trust to lead us into a future controlled by the technology they develop?” It’s not whether AI has the potential to change our lives for the better. It’s whether the people leading the charge will build the systems that focus on that goal. https://gohigherfrequency.com/trust-in-the-age-of-ai/
