AI in space: Karpathy suggests AI chatbots as interstellar messengers to alien civilizations

Andrej Karpathy muses about sending a LLM binary that could "wake up" and answer questions.

Yes, travertine often has embedded fossils. But not usually hominin ones.

So I had a crazy idea... I want to try the "Pay What You Want" thing again when selling art, but offer people who can't decide on an amount a chance to "spin the wheel" and then decide if they want to pay the amount they spin.

It would be between $5 and $35 or something.

Is that too crazy or could it work?

I could always let them decide to walk away and not go through with the sale or something.

Around this time in 2020, roughly two thousand Americans were dying from covid every day and we were begging high school makerspaces to 3d print ventilator parts because Trump’s government completely dropped the ball on pandemic preparations and response.

Remember that in November.

I did WAY TOO MANY things last week (including long satellite pollution meeting, helped lead a workshop for the Canadian Astronomical Society, live radio interview, submitting abstracts, organizing and leading a "teaching climate change" workshop, 3 hour lecture/Q&A at local Science Centre, normal teaching/parenting/etc).

Today I stayed on my farm, harvested willows, and made the biggest basked I've made yet, and I feel very good about this very different kind of productivity.

A gloved hand holding a bundle of red osier dogwood shoots that are super bright red, in front of a snowy field.
A bunch of willow shoots (with a few fuzzy pussywillows showing on some) growing in a winter-killed weedy area, with snow and a bright blue sky in the background.

There are a lot of COVID nasal sprays for sale, but little data to show they work.

The appellate court gave him only 6 days to file something in the Supreme Court (I can't remember off hand what the usual time frame is but it is much longer.)

Generally nothing happens in 6 days.

Within 24 hours, the Supreme Court said that special counsel has a week to file a response. A week means they are not interested in delays.

Expect the DOJ to file early.

Why give the DOJ a chance to respond?

It makes their life easier because the opposing arguments are laid out for them.

@w7voa Good for Mike for hanging up the spikes now. He’s been mostly disappointing as a representative but at least he’s not a feral lunatic like some people we could name.

He’d make a far better senator than Ron Johnson— maybe his political career isn’t quite over yet.

He was one of the few GOPers who seemed genuinely upset on January 6.

I've decorated three denim jackets with LEDs to bring as an installation for the CETI institute in the #portlandwinterlightfestival . How do I sleep past 5am?

zheng3_jim,
@zheng3_jim@mastodon.social avatar

@rasterweb This was my problem too. Lunesta is prescription only, but it’s generic now (eszopiclone).

I usually take the pill around 9, go to bed at 10 and wake up briefly in a daze for about five minutes at around 2, and the fall back asleep. Between 6 and 7 i’m a little hazy, and the I’m out of bed by 7:15 and well rested.

Cant recommend it highly enough.
