Blenderheads who would like to get a taste of SDF 3D modeling, here's a Blender Geometry Nodes scene that turns meshes into pseudo-SDFs by beveling Boolean intersections…

@daniel 👍 I'll have a quick look, be right back. 🙂

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@daniel Had a quick look, and the procedure is entirely executed via Geometry Nodes.

To use your own meshes, just add the mesh to the scene, copy the Geometry Nodes modifier from one of the meshes to your object, and assign a target object in the modifier.

It even works with Suzanne. 🐵

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@daniel Hahaha, you really are a Blender noob if you don't know Suzanne. 😜

Suzanne is the Blender mascot: a monkey head you can add as a primitive to a Blender scene. It is often used for testing purposes, like the famous Utah teapot.

Geometry Nodes is a relatively new node-based scripting system that allows you to generate meshes and effects, automate mass effects like scattering of objects on another object, and much more.

@ephtracy Did you know this online SDF experiment? It's simple but smooth.

@ephtracy The info page mentions it is an "experiment with raymarched signed distance fields"…

There's also a Shadertoy import/export option.

I like the different transition shapes and the non-destructive repetitions.

Just used Glaze for the first time. It's hilarious. You upload an image and then they email you a glazed file a few minutes later. Definitely wasn't expecting it to work that way!

to "invest" $3.2bn in in , "drawing on the country's green energy"

When you read that "AI consumes as much energy as a small country", that country is now Sweden.

And this basically means the country's public power infrastructure is being sold out to private interests.

Shit like this makes me livid.

🧵 Punk vs Prog

Another cultural pundit on TV last night dragging out the threadbare 'Punk was a response to Prog Rock' chestnut. When TV documentaries repeat this punk/prog cliche they always cherrypick Prog's most ludicrous moments (that many prog fans don't like either) to support the claim...
At the time, John Lydon, wore a 'I hate Pink Floyd' t-shirt. Punks also wore swastikas but were far from nazis. Lydon says it was a performative gesture...

Popie is a clone of the arcade game of Popeye, created for the in 1984 and discovered on an old tape at Ocean Software by @MarkRJones1970. It was preserved by Mark in 2015, so you can play and check out the game for yourself:

Straks naar de tandarts, en hoewel er niks aan de hand is, en ik een fijne tandarts heb, en ik zelfs een methode heb om me rustiger te voelen (er overheen kijken in plaats van er tegenop) heb ik de zenuwen zoals toen ik op de middelbare school zat en het laatste uur zwemles was.

metin,
@metin@graphics.social avatar

@edgeofeurope Sterkte.

Decided to start creating something in Womp today, a free online SDF modeler (subscription = more features).

Although MagicaCSG wins in terms of speed, versatility and UI / UX, Womp has got some nice features too.

Updates will follow.

Want to try Womp yourself?

Zomboy, final rendering. 🧟

Exploring Womp was informative. I won't revisit it soon though. The free version is very laggy, because of the constantly streaming nature of the online tool.

Also, the more interesting features, such as textures, are paid-only. The free features are very basic.

#MagicaCSG is the go-to tool if you'd like to enter the world of SDF modeling.

@ephtracy It's possible to create organic characters with NURBS, but it's harder than when using SDF modeling, mainly because the underlying surface structures of NURBS restrict the possibilities. Blends, fillets and chamfers can fail because of surface edges, iso lines, poles, etcetera. Also, coloring is always hard-edged with NURBS, no smooth transitions.

I'll check my archive for some characters I made using NURBS, then post them here.

In early 1993, Commodore hadn't released hardware specs for the new AGA Amiga computers. So me and my game dev partners decided to create a demo trilogy, using self-discovered AGA chipset features.

The second demo was called 'Mindwarp', and I still love to listen to our music composer Ramon Braumuller's 4-channel soundtrack.

More info in the "Team Hoi game devs" section of https://linksta.cc/@seven

Check the hashtag for more tunes.
