Just remember, *Every time advocacy groups warn about tech/capitalism, believe them.* We don't make shit up, we use history of actions and facts to state our reasons to be against it.
If your instance isn't part of @FediPact please urge your admins to join or move to another instance who is.
And if you want proof, ask the general public what Jabber/XMPP was, and then ask what Google how they killed it.

Once people learn about that (or other abuses by Meta), they have the freedom to move off Meta's Chains server, while continuing to talk to their friends still on Chains. Unless the server they move to is blocking Chains that is.
If all fediverse servers supported the Anti-Fedi Meta Pact, those people would have to choose between losing most of their social network or staying on Chains. Making them more likely to stay.

thanks to feedback and help from peeps on here i've made some changes to https://fedipact.online to fix some accessibility issues with the previous version of the site
🖤 there's now a toggle button to swap the background and text (dark mode), and it respects the user's system preference on first load
🖤 there's another toggle button for the animated floating hearts, in addition to them being off if the user has "reduced motion" enabled
🖤 the heart bullet points are formatted properly now so each individual one isn't read out repetitively by screenreaders
🖤 links are now underlined to be obvious as links
if there's any other changes you can think of to make the fedipact experience better for everyone, feel free to send them my way 😁
@FediPact these people have likely not experienced the old days of geocities and MySpace. I think I still have some of their sites seared into my retina.

They began experimentally federating several of their staff accounts. I could read them directly on mastodon. I don’t THINK they could read any Mastodon data
December 2023 – A user will be able to opt in via the Threads app to have their posts visible to Mastodon clients. People would be able to reply and like those posts using their Mastodon clients, but those replies and likes would not be visible within the Threads application. Threads users would not be able to follow or see posts published across Mastodon servers, or reply to them or like then.
Early 2024 (Part One) – the Like counts on the Threads app would combine likes from Mastodon and Threads users
Early 2024 (Part Two) – replies posted on Mastodon servers would be visible in the Threads application
Late 2024 – A “mixed” Fediverse and Threads experience where you will be able to follow Mastodon users within Threads, and reply to them and like them
TBD – Full blended interoperability between Threads and Mastodon
Hi @onepict did you ever find a decent Pixelfed instance that was part of the #FediPact? I'll probably settle on one to switch to this week, as I had some options but didn't want to finalise without checking if I'd missed some info haha!
Squeaky.social does not federate with companies such as Meta. We will continue to support a free and transparent network safe from the aggressive and deceptive practices that these organizations use.
If I have to debunk the "There's no point #fediPact-ing Meta because they'll just scrape what's public" argument one more time I might have to pull out my own eyes.
Beyond the technicalities, or law, there is value in challenging what is wrong even if assholes will still try to do it. There is value in people expressing concerns and working together as a group to address them. There is value in showing those who didn't speak up or act because they thought they'd be alone that they are not.
Mastodon is become more a brand than a software. If one searches 'mastodon' one gets a bunch articles that pretty much treat M'don as a brand with scant lip service to Fediverse, and links to a couple of the biggest M'don instances that happen to be melding with Threats.
If a #NewYearsResolution is your thing, set out to say and write 'fediverse' — proudly and deliberately.
@skobkin have you ever run a social network? You're telling me I should individually ban each Nazi on the 141 million user social network instead of just defederating from the Nazi network all together? Sorry not sorry, but that's just not possible. Every Admin has a limited amount of time. If your instance isn't moderating discrimination it has no place interacting with our users.
Those were the rules for every other Fediverse instance, and we do not discriminate nor favor Threads in any way. They are to be treated like every other instance.
For me personally an instance's user's ability to not be harassed but protected is more important.
We have recently been advocating the activation of a function which is present but usually off in Mastodon and other fedi services called Authorized Fetch. As we plead with the major development projects to take safety more seriously and make it a default, we have learned that Meta itself didn't think twice about it and has activated it in their own ActivityPub implementation against us.
We know this because of news that a fascist has devised a way to evade it and force federation with Threads. They promise to then turn their technique upon us and coerce unblockable federation with fascist and cryptospam instances: https://soapbox.pub/blog/threads-server-blocking/
While Authorized Fetch remains important to activate, it is clear that even it - which remember, provides better defense than that currently implemented on most of our home servers - is inadequate to the threats facing us as the Zuckerberg incursion progresses. If we're serious about protecting our communities and expressions from absorption into surveillance capitalism and the accelerating miseries of fascism, we need to talk about a stronger grade of defensive weaponry.

True safety only awaits us in a transitive approach to defederation, and further on, in an intentional federation based on the allow-list.

Evan has seen fit to misappropriate the "small fedi" idea, then build a blog post around warping it into a smear, with a long list of patronizing and fictional mischaracterizations. But what is truly small is the thinking that the fedi's future is surveillance, algorithmic ingestion, centralized servers too big to moderate, and huge psychotic corporations like Meta. In fact, that is social media's catastrophic past, the one we're all here to reject.
