Oh my. As much as I don’t agree with mr. Fico’s pro-Russian politics, I definitely wouldn’t want to give him any extra sympathies.

Which is sure to happen, because I hope he survives the attempt on his life.

This is also perfect for radicalising the far right among his supporters. Show them a threat and they’ll organise street patrols ”to keep the peace”.

It’s the perfect storm, really. Really wish this didn’t happen!

@wscottwatson Nope. Me neither. But out of respect for the man fighting for his life, without evidence it’s too much my morals to pull at this point.

Definitely to be expected though, is (more) cash flow to far-right and pro-russia blocks, perhaps even militias in Slovakia.

Perfect storm for Russia to stick it’s fingers in.

This sort of thing has big security implications in that it is an Eastern European NATO and EU member state, although is considered a pro-Russian populist.

@sesivany I’m young, but even so I’m already sick and tired of trying to convince the greater half of our population that they are choosing thieves, mobsters and murderers over imaginary threats. Progress and liberalism has become swear words in the mouth of people vitally dependent on the money flowing from the EU. My only schadenfreude is that the idiotic mass will be the first to feel the negative consequences of their choices.

sesivany,
@sesivany@floss.social avatar

@tylnesh there is no rational way to convince them because it's all based on emotions. Only the way out of it is a long-term education, so that people are not easy targets of this in the future.

We share the same problem. Here a lot of people fall for the same shit, too. Just the degree of the problem is different. And we're not out of the woods with Babiš and his 30+% in polls either. Democracy requires a neverending fight for its protection.

Slovakia stopped production at its last coal-fired power plant this week. Its electricity will now come almost entirely from and sources. The Vojany power station, located in the Michalovce district in eastern Slovakia, opened in 1966. There’s now ongoing new narrative being unrolled by prime minister Robert Fico about “many countries considering sending their troops to ”, on which Fico builds his declared refusal.

This single statement is now being hyped on pro-Russian channels (including in Poland) who hysterically (in literal, not figurative sense) scream of “suicide”, “insanity”, presenting it as if NATO forces were already crossing into Belarus.

The problem is that apart from statement from Fico, a political obviously biased and pro-Russian, there’s no single other mention to that effect from anyone in NATO, not a hint.

zii_0,
@zii_0@corneill.es avatar

@kravietz
Not that this is a big statement saying troops will be sent, but I think that's the first time we hear that from a political leader, doesn't it?

kravietz,
@kravietz@agora.echelon.pl avatar

@zii_0

As I understand, Macron replied to a question regarding by Fico’s earlier statement.

Whose comment was vague enough on its own - “were considering sending troops” - which is quite normal, as NATO should be considering every possible scenario and discussing the worst case where Russia launches another full-scale invasion on all directions with the risk of collapse of Ukrainian front.

In this aspect someone asking “can we prevent this by sending NATO troops” is rather natural part of the discussion, especially as it was already discussed in 2022 when many people in the West called to “close Ukraine’s sky”. We don’t know what is the outcome of the discussion.

I personally don’t mind, because if Ukraine falls NATO troops will fight Russians in Lithuania and Poland anyway, except this time Russia will have 300’000 more manpower forcibly mobilized in Ukraine.

Fico presenting it as “NATO will send its troops to Ukraine and we’re all going to die” is an outright manipulation and replaying Russian narratives.
