@Theblueone I remember reading an article in an April issue of Electronics Now in the late 90s which spoke of a drop-in replacement analog CPU. They claimed it was ridiculously faster than the Pentium 3 it replaced and I thought it was really some revolutionary thing. Only a few months later did I finally realize the whole thing was an April fools joke that went over my preteen head.

Anyone know where I can find one of these today, to install in our camper van?

Some months ago, i discovered there is an "abandoned" Darkroom near me.
Today i finally had some time to do a basic get-old-crap-out session. Starts to look nice and useable now

SrRochardBunson,

How does magnetic tape work?
:thinkSpin:
Specifically for recording sound?

I can use a light microscope to see how the stereo data is encoded into the grooves.

An SEM can show the individual magnetic particles that make-up the tape, but then what?

Stereo grooves on test record

@SrRochardBunson

You might do better with an optical microscope with polarized light and filtration. This patent describes the principles pretty well:

https://patents.google.com/patent/US5920538

It remains to be seen if you can get enough contrast to see the expected banding that would indicate the magnetic fields from recording.

Could also do it with Scanning SQUID microscopy, but that's less accessible, I think.

ErgonWolf,

@SrRochardBunson You got me curious. I found this video and this diagram. They should give you better information about how these things work.

I replaced the yellow legal pad on my desk with DSri’s “Emergent Task Planner”. I used an ETP almost daily from 2012-2018. If you’re a paper person, I recommend trying them.
