Anybody here into archery? I’m thinking of taking it up and wouldn’t mind some pointers for a beginner. No hunting, only targets for fun & exercise. Considering a recurve with 30-40 lbs draw. Anything beyond that, I’m clueless. Planning a trip to a semi-local archery shop that has a good reputation. Advice? #archery
I’m here to make friends and be part of a larger community.
I don’t view things as good vs bad. There’s not always a victim, villain, and savior. Life is much more complex than that. For that reason, I’m not one to assume ill-intent. I love to learn new things.
New bow came! #Alibow, Tibetan style, #60 at 29 inches and it's a beast to string! Unfortunately my neck is still sore from a few bad form pulls on my part so I'm going to heal up a bit before shooting it.
#archery Hi all, I am looking for a good sturdy arrow rest. I shoot recurve with carbon/alu arrows and I am open for suggestions.
I was thinking like something this:
@amunizp Yes, this one.
And yes: it seems to be best for barebow.
If you buy the Shibuya rest, please tell me how it works. Currently I have Decut Sius, and it sucks: magnet is very weak (or resistance is too big) and wire does not return to default position itselfs.
I'm interested in your #archery stories regarding how you got involved in the sport. What got you interested? What barriers for entry did you experience? What keeps you shooting? What caused you to lapse?
An update on my #archery adventure progress to see how far I can go at field archery with my ridiculously cheap $200 compound bow.
I discovered that the Chinese company who make my bow, make a thumb button release as well, so I had to try one. For science!
I've only used a wrist strap release before so this thing is... Interesting.
It costs $35. For comparison a Truball Hunter is around $150 and a Carter will set you back $350. There's no adjustment for tension or travel and, hoo boy, is there a lot of travel. Like, half a mile of travel. I had to rotate the thumb button upwards so I could press it all the way down with my big mitt and get it to fire. 😄
It's also very short, so I extended my draw length by about an inch and a half.
I missed at least six of the twenty targets completely in the second round which hurt my score severely. That's a potential one hundred and twenty points thrown away! 😬
The way the field #archery game is scored - three zones worth twenty, eighteen, and sixteen, with the sixteen zone being almost an outline of the entire animal, even dropping an arrow "somewhere" on the target would have gained me over eighty points more...
Looking back, this may be my all-time-best round. Twelve arrows at 20 yards. I have yet to match this consistency and accuracy in a single round. #barebow#archery
10 ends (sets of 6 arrows) with some test shots at the begining on a new target. The sights were not changed. #archery recurve Olympics style bow. Shooting for VAL http://www.virtualarchery.org.uk/ distance is 20 yards ~18.3 m
#TIL the further I pull back the more my arrows go to the right. I am right handed. I rediscovered at least one back muscle I had forgotten to use.
@amunizp yeah I’m on the list! No traditional recurve so I’m gonna try for Barebow 😛 usually shoot 40cm so I will need to get some scores for 60 when I’m at the club again. Still have some weeks though should be good 👍
Almost complete. This is a 70" pacific yew bow that I've carved, and it's currently pulling 40 pounds at a 25" draw.
It looks like it's doing what it's supposed to be doing.
I had a good idea whilst looking for other peoples lost #arrows at my clubs 3D #archery tournament. It was really hard finding #CarbonArrows. Most of them have a tiny pile and a minuscule pin nock. It was really hard to get a decent signal from the metal detector. Wooden arrows tend to have bigger piles but plastic taper nocks so you only get a hit from one end.
I started thinking. A metal detector doesn't actually pick up metal it picks up magnetic fields. One quick search on amazon and you can get 24 2mm diameter x 1mm thick neodymium magnets for 3 quid.
I just tried one of the #magnets with my clubs metal detectors. It works!
The next time I make some #arrows I will add a magnet at each end. There should be enough space at the very tip of the #taper for the pile and #nock. They weight next to nothing so they wont affect the arrow.
Woodman's Finest did a review of the new competition aimed longbow from Baltic Bowyers. It's not on their site yet but looks to be an interesting new option for longbow aficionados
