@SuitedUpDev
Once I turned 60, and especially after I no longer had a job to go to, I ceased caring what anyone else thinks about my appearance. I mean that in a healthy way. I think that's true for most men my age, unless you're a narcissist. 🤷♂️
I do remember taking my swim lessons as a very young kid but I don't remember what it feels like to not know how to swim. I have some adult friends who don't know how to swim and always wondered what it would feel like to learn as an adult. This video series is documenting just that. #swimming Learning How To Swim As An Adult | Episode 1
I’m the child of post war Greek migrants to Australia where urban legend has it, there’s one of us out there who knows how to swim. It’s not me or anyone I know.
@gyptazy Badezentrum Sindelfingen, am Wochenende wird da immer gut geheizt.
4.50€ Eintritt (unbegrenzt) :^)
Beim olympischen Leistungszentrum zu leben hat ein paar kleine Vorteile xD
Yeah, don't worry about trying to get pics and vids of yourself during training, @CodySimpson -- it's less about doing it for the cameras or for the glamour of it. As long as you can record some stories or talk about them after this extreme phase of your life has concluded, that will be more than enough. We do appreciate the glimpses you have shown us as they let us know you're doing everything to push as hard as you can. #AustralianOlympicTrials#Swimming#Dolphins
Cody makes lots of good points and comparisons to what he's going through right now to past events, most notably how his time on Broadway was the closest in terms of effort required.
Just so happens I had another vivid (nighttime) #VisionOfCody recently. It certainly didn't have the persistence of the one a while back where he details that plan he put together, and wanted my opinion on it. But, this latest one did also occur in that same Ford Falcon Wagon after a crazy day of surfing he got in, all before a powerful storm came. The two of us ended up getting stuck in that Falcon Wagon for a while, as we rode out the driving rains and winds outside.
@hankg Many articles online note her prior behaviors (which you noted) and the abuse allegation along with the certification issue. Why? Because it sells whether true or not. I have no reason to not believe her in any of the points. Even if she said something inappropriate about the guy that did the swim, it was her opinion and the context is unknown to anyone but her. I agree the story itself is quite inspirational and it was a great movie.
@shelenn Her embellishments are beyond that. For example she stated many times she was the first woman to swim around the island of Manhattan. She was not. Worse, in writings of hers back to the mid-1970s she wrote about those who did it before. So it wasn’t she wasn’t aware of it, corrected herself, and never spoke of it again.
At the very end of the movie there is a very touching scene where the real life Bonnie and Diane at some post-swim event. In it Bonnie kind of rubs her about her propensity for embellishment.
Why do some people who accomplish such amazing things feel the need to pump the PR to 11 to the point of bending facts or making things up? I don’t know. It appears she is one of them though.
I still think her accomplishments are amazing and noteworthy. So I’m not going to take that away from her.
@bodhipaksa You’ll feel better afterwards - and it is not ‘just’ like stopping banging your head against a wall. We do swim in wetsuits some of the year, but New Year is a (rapid) tradition
@Wen When I lived in Balqhuidder I used to swim in Loch Voil, but I found it too physically painful to go into very cold water. I didn't have much insulation on my body at that time of my life, and the pain in my feet in particular was agonizing.
My cousin used to do a collective New Year swim in the Tay. His wife wrote on his swimming cap, "Do Not Resuscitate!"
I forgot I bought a pair of Aquasphere Prescription lens swimming goggles in 2019. Just found them in a drawer while looking for something else.
My vision wearing them is remarkably similar to my normal glasses. I could certainly use them to watch TV from my living room chair. Obviously I won’t. That would be weird!
But I may sign up for a Better UK swimming pool subscription in January. Then I can go swimming without the risk of cracking my head open on the wall of the pool!
I thought I would be clever and count down from 40 laps--my watch drops laps, so I have to manually count. But it got me confused. I usually use rhyming to keep track (one and done, two for you, etc.) I lost count and did too much. I was trying to ease back up to a mile, but I jumped from 1220 yards to 1480 yards. Came home and took a nap!
@ellenmorrisprewitt Anything that encourages me to more is a good mistake. Congrats. BTW, my spouse (aka the merperson) loves pools they can swim in. Where is that?
Small thing but maybe the swimmers out there can relate. Discovered today that I've been doing breaststroke wrong for the past 40 years!! After realising that I have a very high stroke rate, I did a bit of reading. Tweaked my glide phase (quite radically) today and knocked 20 strokes and 30 seconds off my 100m. 🏊♀️ Would like to go back in time and have a word with my school PE teacher, who I've just found out wasn't just a mean bully, she was also very wrong. 🐬
#Copepods are one of the most numerous metazoans on the planet. They are also capable of insanely fast #swimming escape speeds (20 cm/s) and super sensitive to their environment through mechano- and chemosensors on their antennae. Something not as well known is that their nerves are coated in myelin (often thought found only in vertebrates). This gives them 3x faster reponses to predators. Very sophisticated for a 1-2 mm long #zooplankton. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/12518174_The_need_for_speed_II_Myelin_in_calanoid_copepods

Managed to squeeze in an easy run with some views of the city during the lunch break of the #swimming competition I am officiating today as the chief judge.
