nblr, German @normanposselt @zwangseinweisung
Schon. Nutze ich hier auch, sind aber für Lagerhaltung einfach preislich nicht tragbar. Die Auer-Boxen sind prima für Dinge aus dem eigenen Euroboxen-Lager, die man gelegentlich mal mitnimmt.
baldur, “Google won’t comment on a potentially massive leak of its search algorithm documentation - The Verge”

> suggests that Google hasn’t been entirely truthful about it for years
So this is what the SEO types have been shouting about
yatil, @baldur The article reads a little like a nothingburger… Google extracts author information but there is no evidence that it influences ranking. That’s not exactly new, since schema.org is a Google-led project which helps you to explicitly provide metadata like authors.
smallcircles, HN also mentions another article with more of a deep-dive on what is in the leaked docs:
chrisgeidner, BREAKING: Justice Sam Alito refuses to recuse himself from Jan. 6 cases or Trump cases in letter to Congress.
"My wife is fond of flying flags. I am not," he writes.

Unless, of course, that decision is whether to carry a fetus to term or not. 🙄
lin11c, @chrisgeidner
So force him! Jeez. He's not POTUS. Congress can immediately start an investigation and subpoena him. In your court Dems.

aeva, I've been aware of the idea since my late teens or early twenties or so, but I've really come to appreciate in the last couple of years to what degree the information your senses tell you is subjective to the point of approaching total fiction.
aeva, This all creates a strange problem I do not have an answer for. As your ability to perceive the world and yourself on a very fundamental level is both subjective and malleable, why is it that being intentional about it considered to be sole purview of eccentrics (artists, kinky people, game developers, body modification, and so on)? Why would you choose to reject having such agency? I can't understand it.
aeva, @esther_alter I love driving manual transmission cars because of how it feels once you have the mental model needed to operate it

fabrice, @gabrielesvelto take care, and don't be surprised by a slow recovery. I got it in September (from a visiting parent who was not careful enough...) and it took me months to get back to my regular physical shape on a bike. yetiinabox, Just to throw a bit more gloom on the fire...
The environmental crisis accelerating in leaps, not steadily, and the shift in politics worldwide towards extremism, are not unrelated. Sociology of religion says that cognitive dissonance in general life drives people to adopt highly coherent, unchallengeable ideologies, and extremist politicians (and their marketing teams) know this. "Pragmatist" politics based on slow, steady, market-friendly changes are not able to cope with either (1) the actual changes happening or (2) the appeal of hateful, fearful politics.

kev, My wife and I recently bought an "Emma Mattress". It one of those fancy pants memory foam mattresses. It hasn't been delivered yet, but I'm very excited about it. I think that officially makes me old, right?
adamsdesk, @kev This in deed is a sign, though there is nothing wrong with enjoying the simple things in life.
mike, @kev Nope. My wife and I bought our first foam mattress almost twenty years ago. I was so excited for that thing. It was awesome! I might be old now, but I wasn't then!
christianselig, Random SwiftUI question: is there a way to force SwiftUI's TabView to create all its views' bodies immediately? Say tab 3 kicks off a network request when a subview is created and it'd be great if it started immediately
In UIKitLand
loadViewIfNeeded()
worked well for this, but I can't figure out how to get SwiftUI to create the viewI could manually cycle between them (and it persists obviously), but that feels hacky
christianselig, @ilter The issue is that the network request is kicked off BY the view :p (WKWebView)

chefraven, I had 4 citronella tea lights (you know, the little metal cups) on my back patio table yesterday and they're GONE. Husband didn't touch them. btp, @404mediaco is the most important tech media outlet right now.
btp, @joel This looks like the union is concerned with LLMs and generative AI overall and are openly against the partnership. lol this statement doesn't mention anything about "getting rich" or any compensation or revenue at all.
btp, @joel Look, my only point is that it seems to be the case that people are taking this story, pointing at it aggressively, and yelling about how much they hate OpenAI and LLMs. Which is fine, but it's a little like seeing a story headlined "AI Developer Shits on a Puppy" and then yelling "SEE AI IS EVIL, LOOK AT THIS IT'S ALL EVIL OMG LLMS ARE SO BAD."

ChrisMayLA6, Here is the (two dimensional) political placing of the parties in the forthcoming UK election from Political Compass....
If you thought you didn't have an awful lot of choice, the fact that all major parties are (on this assessment) siting in the blue (Right/Authoritarian) quadrant will confirm that suspicion
simon_brooke, @ChrisMayLA6 @melanie @PoliceStateUK It really irritates and annoys me to hear London journalists refer to #Labour and the #LibDems as 'centre left'. Objectively, of course, they're nothing of the sort -- but in the perversely distorted context of English politics, there is some (relative) truth to it.
But it's also really sad, from a Scottish context, so see how far right the #SNP are these days.

sim, Why do so many people have bad takes about cars?
sim, @sun @grillchen I don't know why this suggestion amuses me so much. I think it has been a thing. On saying this, you can't have them being female-only because of trans women rights now. Even if this is abused by criminals.
grillchen, @sim @sun it would be great if taxis would be affordable again in the west. or car renting more prominent. well it changes. there are some areas/communities where u have to be part of the local car renting thingie to buy a appartment/house.
average car lies still for pber 23h per day. it makes sense 500 people to have less than 500 cars.
how many though is a diffferent topic.
also it is wild how much space streets, parking lots and co take up.
imo a good city needs parking lots at the outskirts and REALLY good public transportation from parking lot to everything else.
so if u visit the city u leave ur car outside.
though as long that is not the case i dont blame people for using their car.
danilo, As both incumbents and investors rush to do Everything With "AI," their singular focus ignores multiple areas that are ripe for building something new.
Here I argue that the rise of LLMs is converging with larger social issues that provoke demand for:
- Better engines of discovery
- Greater reliance on video
- More underground internet
- Expanded privacy software
Sevoris, @danilo basically, reveal the sources under the probability mass that‘s used to estimate the answer.
I wonder how well such a system that suggests a connected smattering of sources off of a possible way a human might glue them together, would actually work pretty well to discover information clusters you can then read on from (i.e. about obscure features of a language and its implications)
danilo, @Sevoris I suspect there's something of the cyborg waiting here
The problem with an LLM right now is the lack of judgement. If it were possible to combine its efficiency and summarization gifts with human signaling, that could go somewhere
In other words, where are the human curation supports that only the machine can do at scale
tubetime, I'm tinkering with some old hard drives, like this ST-251.
