Sheril, There’s a lot of commentary about the film The Idea of You bc Anne Hathaway plays a 40 year old mom who is attractive.
I have not seen the movie, but as a mom of 2 who is also older than Anne Hathaway, the seemingly widespread surprise(?) that women of a certain age can still be engaging & lovely seems so silly.

joesteel, What a curiously dispassionate post on The Verge about their parent company signing a deal with OpenAI. It’s interesting that they posted about it in a way that lumps it together with the other deals and there’s no statement from The Verge’s famously opinionated leadership about what this deal means for publishing, journalism, and the open web.

ProPublica, This week, the Wall Street Journal opinion section published an op-ed about our #tax coverage.
We don't typically comment on our newsgathering process, but this opinion essay has factual errors in the headline and in the essay that should be corrected.
We've submitted this to their editors:
dave, @ProPublica Once again, the Wall St. Journal’s editorial page proves itself to be the home of unrecondite scoundrels, liars and thin-skinned oligarchs who squeal like stuck pigs at any possible encroachment on their perceived privilege

louis, The Mastodon developers started to implement telemetry for everything you search for: Posts, Accounts, Tags
https://github.com/glitch-soc/mastodon/commit/acc77c3836974473e7c6a423cbd1138479ae197a
I'm not so sure if I like what I see in this commit. But we all knew it would be coming eventually.
So important that we build Mastodon-compatible server alternatives.

Please stop sending money to this evil company.
mickymorse, @dangillmor The BBC has banned fux news. Why not the US?
silkester, @dangillmor I can't say I'm happy about the word choices. True. Fox Trash Propaganda not only lies daily, it also distorts perception by disproportionate coverage of true stories of violence whenever a minority is involved and ignoring or downplaying violence by perceived privileged groups and as such pitting people against people in effort to establish minority rule by the owner class and locking in the working class in their "proper place" as the subservient wage slaves to the owner class.

evilcookies98, I don’t know why this just popped into my head. OK, so Apple removed the physical Sim cards from their new phones. That kind of destroys the dual Sim functionality they bragged about.
we_are_spc, @evilcookies98 Can you not add multiple eSims?
Mendi_Tech, @evilcookies98 Actually, it doesn't. You can have two ESims at the same time.

Marsmaedchen, German @melly_maeh Ganz ehrlich? Nirgendwo.

RickiTarr, Maybe I try to look for the sunny side of the street too often, but this is just funny to me. Many of the January 6th Insurrectionists now have felony records, and can no longer own a firearm. THEY TOOK AWAY THEIR OWN GUNS! LOL

Melissabeartrix,
Teri_Kanefield, It looks like the jury instructions in the Trump Manhattan case will soon be available in transcript form. When they are available I plan to analyze them.
Jury instructions are key. Not everything bad or immoral is a crime. To be convicted of a crime, the prosecution has to present evidence beyond a reasonable doubt to prove each element of a specific crime.
Because of how complicated this charging document is (predicate crimes for predicate crimes) the jury instructions will give the roadmap.
WhiteCatTamer, @mattblaze @godzero @Teri_Kanefield Hmmm.
On the one hand, I understand the argument that poor physical notes could, by their being physical, confer a greater sense of authority to the notetaker/other jurors, and a disagreement on the facts could lead to more hung juries.
On the other hand, that strikes me as, by default, lending more weight to the confident juror in place of the meticulous and attentive one, and leaving all at a bit of a loss.
mattblaze, @WhiteCatTamer @godzero @Teri_Kanefield Well, your argument is now the prevailing wisdom pretty much everywhere (including NY), where notes are permitted.
drq, Alright, I've been thinking. As we know, the default model of conversation on the Fediverse is a tree. Threads are directed graphs, each node is allowed multiple children and only one parent. Kinda like a filesystem. There are also (hash-)tags, but they are a bit meta and work across all conversations.
What if we upgrade it a little bit? What if we allow multiple parents to each node? What if you can reply to multiple posts? I miss this feature because sometimes, when I post something, I get similar replies from different people, and I'm forced to either answer both of them (which sucks, because duplication of effort) or reply to only one and leave all others unanswered, which spawns an offshoot conversation that is basically already over. This way, conversation may feel more like putting out little fires at times. So, instead I can just add all of those in one reply, and add more as they appear.
And it's not that hard to do. Just make in-reply-to a list, not a string.
dotterian, @drq also thought about this. Even bought a domain for it and started coding, but then dropped, since developing for Fedi has many caveats which I'm just too scared to solve.
Depression and constant lack of free time also don't help.
drq, Russian @dotterian I know that feel, bro.
adrianhon, What are the websites that make reading 10,000+ words a delight?
Hit me up with your best examples of online longform reading experiences! I don't mean NYT-style Snowfall things, I'm more interested in books/blog posts.
Bonus points if they do interesting things with footnotes, links, and all that!
adrianhon, This is research for something I want to build, so individual features from sites are also useful!
barberousse_bin, IMO, simple text on a plain background with little to no clutter makes for the best reading experience. Especially when it comes to longer content

RickiTarr, This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:
Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.
NickGates, @RickiTarr backyard deer are more closely related to dolphins than to horses
markwyner, @wouldinotcallmyselfahumanbeing @RickiTarr no apology necessary. I can easily see how anyone could connect those dots. I mean, you could probably debate it as a larger concept in that context.
