Okay I'm really starting to love #Beeper! I finally got Facebook hooked up to it, so I can get Messenger messages in it, and already have iMessage hooked into it. Also it does have sound effects, they're just not enabled. And the settings option is hidden in a menu button near your chats. Yeah it needs some accessibility work, but I think I'm really gonna get some use out of this.
Apple’s "commitment to privacy" is much more a commitment to walled gardens and Apple’s bottom line, rather than the privacy of Apple’s users. and their attack on Beeper is proof of this, Beeper which simply brings full iMessage compatibility to Android is being attacked and sued by apple.
Beeper users say Apple is now blocking their Macs from using iMessage entirely. This is likely the final nail in the coffin for what Beeper has been trying to accomplish.
US Senator Elizabeth Warren:
"“Green bubble texts are less secure. So why would Apple block a new app allowing Android users to chat with iPhone users on iMessage?"
A lot to unpack here. At the very least, this feels like foreshadowing of political trouble coming for Apple.
It is crazy that in the conversation around #imessage on #android with #beeper was the unspoken assumption that #apple would be happy to foot the bill for android users to use their service for free and let a third party company charge a subscription for using Apple resources.
Why would that ever work? What company would ever agree to that?
Honestly, I don't think there is a better way to read your morning news than in Links on a memory LCD. This is how the internet is meant to be consumed
Feels like this whole problem of Blue bubble/Green bubble is so American? I don't know anywhere else in the world its such a big problem?
Sure people will tell me, I'm very wrong :)
I’m excited to announce that Beeper has been acquired by Automattic. This acquisition marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter as we continue our mission to create the best chat app on earth.
Just got suspended by #Facebook after less than 24 hours of creating an account. Only reason could be, I said in my bio I won't be posting there as I now have the #Beeper app to handle messaging on my phone without the metadata tracking...
It doesn't pay being honest sometimes ;-) but no ways I'd actually install an app like WhatsApp or Facebook on my phone...
Beeper is awesome. I have now all my instant messaging in the same app including Telegram, Matrix, Signal, WhatsApp, Instagram DM, LinkedIn DM and even IRC. https://www.beeper.com
(For all other sublapidians: messenger supporting 15 other messenger protocols, including WhatsApp, Signal, Discord, Matrix. Actually built on top of Matrix, with bridges they are open-sourcing).
So, any opinions on that yet? Security, UX? Pain of self-hosting? Because not really looking for a subscription for "larger chat history backup, access to unlimited network connections, and more."
• I've actually had an easier time keeping up with Slack than in Slack itself
• Initially I ran clients side by side but Beeper updates just as fast and I've since stopped running most except for Discord which I use for calls
• Even so, it's great to run it in parallel to Discord, because it's easier to text chat in Beeper while in a video call
