This week, there’s Ghost of Tsushima news, Twitter making normal words slurs, and people really think Microsoft cares about the Xbox numbers.

We're working on a piece about darlings — those pieces of that refuse to die because of communities that have sprung up around them to keep them alive. We're looking at / @rebble, , , and various retro and , as well as numerous platforms — what are some other beloved devices and dedicated folks and communities that should be on our radar? 🤘💾🤘

People should really, stop speculating and giving too much value on rumors.
Wait till uncle Phil clears things out.
In the meantime... enjoy gaming, no matter what platform you're using 🎮

The more people tell the same story, the more real it will start to sound. There is absolutely no need to spread chaos.

Whatever the outcome may be, it is exceedingly unlikely that you'll be negatively affected (you can keep playing).

I love game consoles, but they don't really make much sense anymore.

The PS5 and XsX are practically identical hardware, and also effectively the same as an x86_64 gaming PC. But then on the software side, you get a simplified OS that's arbitrarily limited and locked down compared to Windows and especially Linux. They're computers, just held back by crappy restrictions.

What's the point when almost all the same games are coming to PC anyway?

@emmetoneill@mas.to avatar

And listen, I know they've always just been locked down computers.

But back in the day they were at least different from eachother in how they handled input, graphics and sound, and with sometimes radically different controllers and architecture. On top of that they used to have their own library of games. Which is why Nintendo will continue to be fine as long as they can keep unique doing things with their hardware and exclusive software.

I'm not sure if it will pan out this way, but it feels like the is one of the most important devices of late for and when you think about the AAA process.

So historically it's easier to develop for as you have a common spec to develop against so you know if it's going to run well. The deck easily could become the PCs common spec, giving a single lowest denominator that also can be used to verify compatibility as well.

It seems many who are into don't really seem to know that is basically a problem that largely doesn't exist in . Shader Compilation Stutter occurs because shaders need to be compiled from source for every computer on the CPU itself, which takes real-world time. It's a "nine women can't make a baby in 1 month" problem, where the brute strength of your CPU doesn't matter, it'll still take time.

GabeMoralesVR,
@GabeMoralesVR@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

The reason you have to compile shaders from source, is because shaders can be programmatic, which is to say, they can take into account system variables, like framerate, resolution, etc. There is no one-fit solution for the shader binary which is run on your computer, there are millions of permutations depending on your hardware. So game developers can't simply bundle pre-compiled shaders with the game, like they can on the fixed hardware of . Hence the stuttering.

Personally I’m not sure why anyone is shocked by the RT implementation in Forza. The reality is current gen consoles simply are not powerful enough to produce true ray tracing. Heck most gaming pcs still can’t! I look at the marketing for Ray Tracing on modern consoles like the marketing for HD on 7th gen consoles. Few games hit 720p even fewer hit 1080p. PS4 and Xbox one hit those targets better. Personally I think 4k 60 was good enough for now.

I wish people would stop giving console gaming the cultural capital that it has.

These are proprietary locked down machines that you can’t upgrade, nor can you mod them without running afoul of Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo.

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@atomicpoet #Consoles are also fairly self-contained appliances with a fixed cost designed for shared living spaces. A successful console platform can play compatible #games for its entire life without upgrades and the tinkering that comes with a general-purpose platform. That’s a compelling value for many people.

And I say this as someone for whom tinkering is the #game sometimes.

#gaming #VideoGames #ConsoleGaming

mjgardner,
@mjgardner@social.sdf.org avatar

@atomicpoet My point is that it’s okay for people to choose from multiple paths to the same ends (of enjoying #VideoGames). And your initial statement that #ConsoleGaming should not have so much “cultural capital” (https://atomicpoet.org/objects/3e8d5eb7-4971-40f9-8781-e88a0248e7da) is just a fancy way of saying others’ choices you disagree with are wrong.

I’m really sorry that your #NintendoSwitch repair was so expensive. But it’s a vast leap generalizing that to a condemnation of all #consoles for everyone.
