Hello, I’m going to be getting a new computer soon and have thought about linux. Questions inside

With the new computer and the newer Microsoft Windows updates they have really jam packed their OS with bloat and spyware. That being said I have no idea what I’m doing with Linux, need help with where to start.? What are some general tips? I understand there’s a lot of prebuilt Linux distributions or something what are some...

First thing you do is get yourself a USB stick for booting, I know others suggest virtual machines for testing, but in my opinion you really want to run the distribution on real hardware and since you’re going to install the system anyway you might just get used to the booting process. The boot process has been complicated a bit by UEFI and that’s why I won’t recommend using minor distros to begin with, because you’ll want something that just boots and later installs nicely on a secureboot enabled system. The major distros have bootloaders and kernels signed and ready for secure boot systems.

It’s a simple as:

  • Go grab Rufus for writing the .iso files to a USB stick. You can also use any other tool that allow you to write the .iso in raw form to the USB stick.
  • Download fx. Linux Mint (pick a mirror from the list)
  • Run Rufus and select your USB device, then open the .iso file you’ve just downloaded
  • Click start and in the popup dialog choose to write as a raw DD image.
  • When done, reboot and choose to boot from the USB stick in your BIOS¹ menu.
  • You’ll now be running Linux on your PC from a USB stick.

1: How to enter a menu where you can select the device to boot is up to your motherboard manufacturer, so consult the manual. Usually you can press Escape on boot or one of the F keys.

I seem to be dealing with a troll website this morning. The downloads start really fast, then they slow down, then they slow down, then they slow down... rinse and repeat.

The end result is that the download will never complete.

I don't recall how we describe that mathematically.

Pro-tip: If someone claims a model is trained on "the entire internet" they don't actually know what they're talking about and don't understand a) data b) dataset documentation and therefore c) how to reason about the model they're describing.

The internet is not a single thing you can go and download somewhere.

Decent Linux Java launcher?

I’ve been playing on Linux using Sklauncher for a while now, but it’s feeling more and more like a scam. Every time there’s an update to the launcher, the old one is immediately disabled. You can only get the new one from their ad riddled site, often with inappropriate ads, and it ‘can’t’ handle the traffic. The...

Use MultiMC. They have Linux binaries and are arguably the most stable and easiest to manage launcher. Being able to sandbox separate instances for every version including modded installs is lovely.

Chrome just crashed, when I reopened it it was blue

I don't want it to be blue. I don't understand why it's blue. I looked at my "theme color" and it had "default color", which looks light gray, selected.

In an attempt to recover the old behavior, I set a custom color and selected pure white, 255 255 255. What pure white gives me is a very dark gray. The address entry bar is also a very dark gray.

I don't like this. I just want it to go back like it was before. Is this possible

Also appears that the download bar at the bottom has been replaced with a menu in the top right like Safari and Firefox use :/ So now the upper right of my Chrome window is a procession of eleven (11) cryptic black and white icons, at least five of which I will never, ever click on. This is not an A/B test thing, it's an officially announced change.

However, for now you can reverse this with:

Anyway to download an entire playlist through spotifymate without manually downloading each song?

It lets me paste the playlist link but everytime I have tried it, it makes you manually download each song in the playlist rather than automatically doing it. Am I missing the place that you download all or is this how the website is meant to be used?...

Maxy, to freemediaheckyeah in Anyway to download an entire playlist through spotifymate without manually downloading each song?

I personally use the “slav art” discord bot. It lets you paste links from Spotify, deezer, qobuz, tidal and a few more. Some of the music providers are down from time to time, and the server gets nuked by the mods sometimes, but when it works, it’s great.

PS: Reddit migrator here, is it still necessary to change the links and avoid directly linking?

Every of free releases saves a piece of that is safer on your hard drive than with a for-profit company. Plus, by listening to your local archive, you save a lot of energy that a streaming service consumes.

What a installing 14 b3 in a separate partition!

The documentation provided by (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208891) is simply wrong.
If you download the updater from the ugly System Settings, it will update the active running system, which is NOT what we need, ever.

So I had to separately the PKG Installer, but as Apple is not providing us with a link, I had to rely on this page here:

https://betaprofiles.dev/install/macos-14/

Dear Apple, is that the best you can do?
Why can't you simply give us the frickin' link to the Installer PKG?
