So, came out to the lake after being away for a week and found this squatter sleeping in my living room.
Not sure how to deal with a bat. I'd hate to toss him out in the cold... its only about 2 C.

Any suggestions?

Where will all the microbats go when the NSW forests are logged and clear-felled?

Decline of rare UK bat linked to tree felling for British empire’s fleets
"Rife deforestation 500 years ago aligns with western barbastelle slump, finds study of bat DNA."

"The examples of flora and fauna disappearing because of human excesses over the past 50 years are manifold, but research has found that the decline of a characterful bat began in the UK when its trees were felled for shipbuilding 500 years ago."

"“These bats usually roost in mature oak and beech trees, and move around every few nights – so they benefit from areas with substantial woodland cover. Our findings reveal that the northern and southern British populations have declined over several centuries, beginning about 500 years ago. This coincides with a period of widespread tree-felling to supply wood for colonial shipbuilding. It is likely that the decline we found was triggered by this loss of woodland – which has continued since that period.”

The barbastelle are sparsely distributed in the landscape and absent from many areas of the country.

Bats are in trouble. That’s not good for anyone who likes mezcal, rice or avocado

If you’ve ever enjoyed coffee, tomatoes, corn, bananas, mangoes, walnuts, chocolate, tequila or mezcal, you may just owe bats a thank-you.

Not so silent Sunday here today. There were scuffling, scurrying noises from the attic, which I had to investigate because I just couldn’t enjoy my cuppa.

Turns out we had a starling in there, who very much didn’t want to be in there. They flew down from the hatch to a window, and I gently trapped them at the opening side using the curtain, got the window open, and they went out no bother.

And now, tea.

Bats: Fast, dark colored and come out at night.

Not easy to photograph. This is the best I got.

These are some of the bats of the Waugh bridge colony.

Great videos @sober_pirate - I like the fact that the way you film and edit them makes it so easy to follow. From music and the audio overall, or the cuts, you do a great job. People should be more aware of the so many volunteers out there doing good work.

Where they really 8 thousand bats there? Crazy...

Weighing between 0.05 and 0.07 ounces with a head-to-body length of 1.14 to 1.29 inches and a wingspan of 5.1 to 5.7 inches, the bumblebee bat (aka Kitti’s hog-nosed bat) is the world's smallest mammal.

Remember COVID and the coronavirus?

There is an interesting discussion about bats, pangolins, and SARS-CoV-2 in the Nature Communications paper "Evidence for SARS-CoV-2 related coronaviruses circulating in bats and pangolins in Southeast Asia" [1].

The paper is also discussed in some detail on TWiV 722 [2]. The discussion starts at about 00:19:20.

More cool research on bats and SARS-CoV-2.

How to reduce bird and bat kills from wind turbines, by

  • Turn off wind turbines at very low speeds when bats are around
If turbines are off at wind speeds below 6.5 m/s, bat kills are reduced by 93%.

  • Also, stop wind turbines when migratory birds pass by (which is very occasionally)

  • Don’t put wind farms in high-risk areas for birds and bats

  • Fewer larger turbines are better than many small ones

And more!

🧵 1/2 That's never happened to me before: My podcast script has taken on a life of its own. I had to read tonnes, dived into the sea instead of roaming through savannahs as I had intended. I tell you about bats that love cacti and plants that construct bat motels. I sing like Kermit and travel back in time to the first flowering plant thanks to a book. We meet the oldest clone organism on earth and cheerleaders that mop the seabed.

I'm changing it up a little with an article on how some bats do "it" without intromission. The erect male organ in this species is 22% of its body length. So best to keep it outside.

GUARD OLD-GROWTH FORESTS FROM LOGGING

Mature and old-growth #forests are a vital part of a healthy #planet. They fight #ClimateChange by storing massive amounts of #carbon; give a home to imperiled #species like #SpottedOwls, #wolverines and #bats; help support healthy #watersheds; and withstand #wildfire better than young forests.

Sadly, most old-growth forests have been logged. We need to save what's left.

Thousands of bats likely wiped out after soaring temperatures smash starving colonies

"A perfect storm of deadly events has seen bats die at every colony across NSW. High branches around NSW have been left littered with the bodies of dead grey-headed flying fox pups after soaring temperatures above 40 degrees coincided with a mass starvation event. While rescuers were able to capture dozens of dying animals and take them into care, hundreds, possibly thousands, are believed to have died.">>

Flying lemurs, aka colugos (more closely related to bats than lemurs).
Some species have cryptic patterns that are mottled or spotted fur that resemble bark or leaves. They're not able to change color like a chameleon. Endemic to rain forests of Southeast Asia and the Philippines.
