thought through my head recently: what to use or make which is minimally scented... as a I find are extremely sensitive to perfumes in hair/soaps/etc. and it's better to minimize scented soaps, etc. The "whatever random stuff is on sale" default here (I am not the shopper, typically) is not ideal. (Update: Looks like I am going to try to make Castile soap, which is made out of olive oil. I have all the supplies and ingredients needed here, LOL).

Bees (that are not our bees) took over the shed. My daughter (a beekeeper) had to remove them. As she was working, a small child passing on a trike looked terrified and shouted 'Bee Men!'.

Bee women too, my little Dude. Bee women too.

Over on tiktok user @nomadicpancakes has observed a group of that have learned to turn on the sensor on a water bottle filling station by walking over the target.

This is just the kind of thing bees are made to learn, they love targets and need to follow them when dealing with flowers all the time.

The interesting thing is that the bee who hits the target produces water for her sisters, herself less so. But these girls seem to have that worked out!

We inspected today. We have concluded we just don't know enough. The in the original hive were practically lethargic and haven't gotten anything done (i.e. no new frames drawn out) despite having been fed a couple of weeks ago. /1

I've not seen a bee so completely black and white before. Anyone know if this a particular type (a quick search suggests b&w bees exist) or is this an aged, usually black and yellow bee (an OAB, if you will)?

You: You haven't spent your Sunday chasing bees round the garden with your camera then drawing on the photos have you?

Me: What?! That sounds like a foolish way to waste an afternoon!

Also me: Yes, yes I have.

Fer cryin' out loud. We moved a bee swarm to a ranch this morning and walked outside and a new swarm showed up just a few minutes ago.

Okay folks as we seem to be heading in to some warm dry weather we need to talk about and .

Please pass this on to provide bees a helping hand. Thanks.

BEES NEED WATER!

Given that they can collect water, their nectar based diet and their ability to generate…

Not sure who needs to hear this... but... honey bees throughout the world are an invasive species. They are only native to Europe. Stop trying to save invasive species!

New study reveals unexpected benefit of solar farms — here’s what it could mean for farmers

"The study involved seeding the land underneath the solar panels with 66 different species of native plants and flowers.

They found that after five years, populations of native had risen to 20 times their initial levels."

Hmm, it appears we have 3 or 4 virgin queens out mating willy nilly today (or getting eaten by birds). (ps. talking about , not people).

Things I learnt today:

  1. If I decide to "take 5" at my computer after doing some strenuous garden work, with the intention of grabbing a shower & making myself presentable after those 5 minutes, I should not

a) open Mastodon

b) open PhotoShop

  1. If you put a human mouth on a bee while it's poking at pollen it looks a little like it has a hipster goatee beard.

Anyhow, I really need a shower.

Doh! I grew up in and somebody just pointed out to me (today) that "Deseret" means "honeybee" (from the Book of Mormon -- the religious book, not the Broadway play). 🤷

I'm disappointed that the (what seemed to me) extremely loud buzzing from loads of bees can't really be heard on my video.
Out on my walk with Arthur this morning I was fascinated by them busying around on the ivy flowers.

This weekend I managed to take some ok pictures of bees with my new camera :)

This is also how I learned that bees don't just wait for a flower to bloom, they WILL force it open to dive in for some sweet sweet pollen.
