The Washington State Senate today passed SB 5729, legislation to ensure that Washingtonians with diabetes would continue to pay no more than $35 a month for insulin. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Karen Keiser (D-Des Moines) and passed unanimously.
"The looming effects mean more than just the loss of the night sky. ... It is not alarmist to suggest light pollution is going to result in increased rates of hospitalizations, and even the emergence of new diseases."
Some news coverage in Axios today of last week’s light pollution papers in Science, among other recent developments, with particular emphasis on health concerns.

Last Friday I was released from the hospital and rehab after 40 days. I am at home doing personal rehab and building my strength back up. It’s been quite the journey.

Withings Body Smart Review: A Connected Scale For the Masses that includes baby/pet weight
I like devices that are not locked into an OS ecosystem (Apple, I’m looking at you!) and although I already have a Fitbit Aria scale, it gets thrown out when my wife stands on the scale with a pet, to get the pet’s weight (you weigh yourself, hold the pet, an ...continues
The United Kingdom is crisscrossed with public footpaths where the public holds a legal right to traverse.
Many of these paths are centuries old. Many of them are probably even older, dating back thousands of years to the Neolithic or older.
They predate virtually every extant property claim that could be leveraged against them. They have belonged in common to the community that uses them since before there was a British state.
And yet, the British state is in the process of handing over thousands of miles of public footpaths to private owners because these paths—older than the state—have not been registered with the state. In James Scott’s terms, they are not legible to the state.
But carefully surveyed, delineated, discrete parcels of private property linked to individual owners—the state’s favorite—are legible to the state. So over they go.
@HeavenlyPossum This is appalling. Everyone knows (especially an ex health minister) that walking, particularly in green spaces, is good for health, especially mental health, which is in crisis. Once again this terrible government is putting the interests of a few rich pals before the welfare of the rest of us. Simply shameful. #walking#health#mentalhealth#tories
In a typical supermarket, one dollar could buy 1200 calories of potato chips and cookies. The same dollar could only buy 250 calories of carrots and other whole vegetables. On the beverage aisle, you can buy 875 calories of soda for a dollar, but a dollar will only buy you 170 calories of fruit juice from concentrate. These numbers show why people with limited money to spend on food spend it on the cheapest calories.
I've spent the past 13 years on a ketogenic diet of some form. When I started, I weighed 270 lbs and it was the heaviest I had ever been in my life. I felt gross, demotivated, and stuck. When I smashed off 50 lbs in the first few months without really knowing what I was doing, it was a godsend. The next 30 lbs took me over a...
I'll admit to having more than my fair share of struggles with body dysmorphia even if it never lead to health endangering behaviors. As I continue to keep my health and fitness dialed in I've been watching a lot more health and fitness YouTube videos too. For anyone struggling with body image issues I would say do not under any circumstances watch videos where body builders critique physiques. For example take these two images of Michael B. Jordan that one YouTuber was using as part of answering a question about what he thought his routine was and if he was using performance enhancing drugs. The physique on the left he described as "You wouldn't think much of his physique...kind of lean...no appreciable muscle definition." The one on the right, "Looks the same...maybe with a bit more fat packed on...not much more muscle...probably 4-5 pounds of pure extra fat." If I was in a negative body image headspace that could probably get me in a bit of a funk. Someone really struggling with it, especially with a goal of getting extra muscle would easily have very negative psychological repurcussions of hearing something like that about a legitimately good physique. Perhaps it is appropriate for competition critiquing but I doubt most listening to it, especially someone with body dysmorphia, would take it that way. #BodyBuilding#fitness#health#longevity#BodyPositivity
There really should be a: ‘So your body is changing’ guide at 40…
-hairs where you previously had none?
-sudden changes in metabolism?
-new type of hair that you never had before appearing?
-need for naps suddenly changing?…
And as long as you have two-factor authentication on your Apple ID (enabled by default for most people), not even Apple can read your synced health and activity data.
Don't prejudge able-looking people using parking spots for disabled. Especially if they have a disabled sticker. There are many invisible disabilities that cause pain, mobility issues, balance problems, bad lungs and other issues that make walking across a parking lot difficult.
I'm posting this for a family member who is not on Mastodon. She is 32 with an invisible disability. She has #scleraderma -- a degenerative #chronic condition. A lot of pain, on a lot of meds making her immunocompromised and other issues. Her mother also has disabilities. Neither has a wheelchair but they do have mobility issues.
She wrote "Please do not immediately assume due to age and not looking disabled on the outside that they are not truly disabled and faking it, and start yelling, screaming, swearing and degrading them. There are many disabilities which are not visible such as chronic pain, chronic fatigue, MS, arthritis, Scleroderma, lung disease, etc. Just because you cannot see the disability of a person does not mean it is not there. I have been treated like this many times, and it hurts a lot and is insulting and embarrassing. The pain of our #disabilities is enough to deal with day to day, we do not need to be treated horribly on top of it. Before acting, please find out what is going on with that person you assume is not #disabled. We are more than willing to explain, but not be treated horrible right away without asking us."
I just wrapped up Phase 6 of my Goal Accountability scoring my first A- for the entire phase since early 2020. Continuing to keep things dialed in for a whole four weeks more was very confidence boosting. So I'm going to be ramping up some of those goal score requirements going into Phase 7. Full details of how Phase 6 went and what I'm aiming for for Phase 7 is in the attached closeout/kickoff post. #GoalAccountability#health#fitness#longevity 2023 Goal Accountability Phase 6 Closeout/Phase 7 Kickoff
