Don't get me wrong, the #instance thing matters. People didn't know what instances on #mastodon would welcome newcomers. It wasn't that "what the hell is an instance" confused them, but some of them ended up in the wrong neighborhood.
I think if people really want more of their friends in the #Fediverse we're going to need to establish a list of ambassador instances, instances that are stable and friendly to newcomers.
Something's come up on #kbin and #lemmy is the request for a FAQ or a wiki. If we could find a place for a #Fediverse wiki, for all I know someone already has one, we could maintain a list of friendly newcomer #instances for #Mastodon, #Calckey, #Misskey, #Friendica... well, any app on the Fediverse there.

Hey, I want to move #instances since mstdn.social (which is otherwise quite fine) has blocked democratic profiles from the EU parliament (why??) and blocks Threads.
I am looking for a new #instance that's big (I fear crumbling otherwise?), general (this profile posts about politics and hobbies), blocks spam and hardcore pornography, nazis etc., but is otherwise pretty relaxed and doesn't do much blocking. I post in German and English - please help me find my new home! 👀 🥰

Anyone have a recommendation on a larger #Mastodon instance with 1,000-character limits on toots? Would prefer something in the "general" or "social" category, and preferably a stable/consistent userbase.
I agree that a 500-character limit is good 99% of the time, but the inability to natively create threads in the main Mastodon UX has me occasionally yearning for more...

I personally think that segregation, gated communities, borders, walls are not good for the network itself, and that blocking should be an individual choice, not enforced by anyone.
But to grok me you'd need to understand coercive groups & cults toxicity / group thinking drifts.
hello all! i've been on #mastodon for almost a month apparently (wow, really?), and i'm happy to report that this is really starting to feel like it's my new online community. i like it here.
now when i registered, i was less familiar with how #instances work and what it really meant... i picked one that seemed relevant to my interests (techhub.social), and on the one hand, i feel like it doesn't matter a whole heck of a lot because of federation.
but people seem to have strong opinions about their instance! i don't have any issue with techhub, but this #instance itself isn't really what makes me feel like i'm part of the greater mastodon community, so to speak. it just happens to have "tech" in the name.
all this to say, does anyone have any insight on whether it's worth it for me to migrate to a different instance? pros/cons? suggestions for a particular instance?
or maybe i'm overthinking it, and i just stay on techhub since i can still see the rest of the #fediverse from here!

I am on mastodon.gardensoul.org, but the instance has been down for almost a full day now without any notice or status update. While I hope it'll come back, might be good to have a plan b.
