#Matrix experience on the phone (iOS) is atrocious.
There are 3 clients total. Element seems to support all the features but has some horrendously bad UX. It's cryptic to the point where it's hard to figure how to navigate it. It also randomly doesn't show messages in the threads until very late after.
FluffyChat is clearly not a native app. You just feel it in how clunky the interactions are. Doesn't support threading either, which makes it useless for e.g. the slack bridge.
I remember Element X was actually a good experience, but it requires some specific protocol extension that's implemented with a proxy that doesn't work with Conduit
Now is a good time to become a Matrix Foundation member, because it will allow you to vote for members of the new Governing Board, who will support and guide Matrix.
Still thinking I am likely to stand for the Matrix Governing Board.
My top priority would be to help the foundation move to a place where Matrix is sustainable, and slowly but surely becomes a widely-adopted standard for instant messaging.
Liebe #Follower.
I expect the docker image would contain a GHC that stack would find and use; I am using the matching resolver for the tag (e.g.: 22.17). :blobfoxhappy:
In the past, I've used Matrix/element, and I can't say how many times better it worked. About 1.5 years ago, we decided migrate to MS 365 and I find it a pita.
Does anybody have a clue about the status of Teams<->Matrix integration? I remember, there were numerous attempts to do this using a bridge/puppet, but at least AFAIK that didn't work too well.
What is the status of this? Any insights appreciated 😎
So I'm just a few days into running my #Matrix server, and I have to say that doing any kind of public server that requires moderation seems like a very half-baked proposition right now.
Using any kind of bot for moderation—the only real option because bans do not propagate to all rooms in a "space,"—requires an encryption hall pass proxy that hasn't seen a commit in almost a year, despite several bugs. That's to say nothing of the awful state of documentation.
I'm soldiering on, but this is some classic open source nonsense. "Leave the easy proprietary platforms and just host your own thing! Here's no help at all, also this and that don't work. RTFM! Except the TFM isn't finished."
How do you feel about #Beeper, #Automattic and Automattic acquiring Beeper?
TBH credit is due where credit is due. Nobody can predict the real intentions of a company, least of all engineers, but Beeper has from day 1 built its product on top of #Matrix, it has made it much easier to install and configure messaging bridges (even to those less likely to go through the hassle of configuring a full Synapse server and install bridges with huge configuration files), and it has challenged Apple head-to-head with the iMessage bridge.
I feel that Beeper joining forces with Automattic will give the company both:
Stronger shoulders to defend themselves from lawsuits coming from the likes of Apple and anybody who has made it their business mission to oppose inter-operability as long as they can - Apple can’t simply take down a Github repo with a snap of their fingers if that Github repo is owned by the same company that also owns Wordpress, at least not without a lengthy legal battle on the blueprint of Epic v Apple. Moreover, sclerotic corporate scum with an outdated business model like Apple will just never understand how big of a favour they do to small companies like Beeper when they attack them. Beeper was in beta until recently. Then it got a lot of attention after Apple declared war to its iMessage bridge. Consequence: the largest company on earth suddenly put a relatively small product like Beeper under the spotlight, its user-base went up by an order of magnitude or so within a short time frame, they rushed their way out of beta, and now Automattic is acquiring them. There’s no better publicity than an aggressive rent-seeking parasite waging war against your product.
More opportunities to sit at a table with the likes of Google, Meta etc. and get them to actually build the open alternatives together, instead of reverse engineering their closed garden and play and endless catch-up game with them.
The timing of this announcement is also perfect, as the EU’s #DMA is just about to make inter-operability a requirement for messaging gatekeepers - and Beeper seems to be eager to capitalize on its opportunity of being at the right place at the right time.
Let’s keep an eye on how this product develops. I see a lot of potential for growth, and I’ll be looking for all the signals of early-exit/lock-in/enshittification.
While #Beeper is mentioning #Matrix among the supported chat networks, I don't see it on their "Main Chat App" page that appears after you save recovery code. I don't feel very secure trusting any of the other networks to act as sort of a entry gate, except maybe Signal.
What does picking main chat app even entail, I wonder? 🤔
Nevermind, I'm reminded that #Beeper uses its own #Matrix server and it's basically engrained in the app that none of the outside Matrix accounts can be connected...
Curious how none of the coverage of this launch mention that the app isn’t actually open-source (though they pretend to be an open-source project), which makes all of their claims of “end-to-end encryption” worthless...
@Samsy@arbocenc#XMPP can run bridges (called "Transports" or "Gateways" in XMPP terms) since the early ages. And nowadays, there are modern ones with tight integrations: #Slidge being a flagship (including a #Matrix gateway), and I'm myself working on ActivityPub gateway and soon a email one with #Libervia. #Cheogram is also working on SMTP gateway. And #Biboumi is the flagship #IRC gateway.
Automattic buys Beeper for $125MM, launches closed-source "privacy" app (techcrunch.com)
