Jesse #Barrett is a trial lawyer & managing partner at SouthBank Legal. He heads the firm’s Washington, DC, office, which opened after Justice Barrett joined the high court.
“The same goes for the flying of an #AppealToHeaven flag at Justice #Alito’s vacation house along the NJ shore. Like the #UpsideDown flag, this #flag is viewed by a great many people as a banner of allegiance on #partisan issues that are or could be before #SCOTUS.
The #SupremeCourt on Thurs allowed the use of a #SC congressional map that a lower court said “exiled” thousands of #BlackVoters to carve out a district safer for a #WhiteRepublican incumbent.
The decision was a victory for #Republicans not only because it clears the way for a map that is favorable to the #GOP. It also sets a high bar for determining when a map can be considered a #RacialGerrymander, rather than a #partisan one. #SCOTUS has previously found the #Constitution bars racial #gerrymandering but that federal courts cannot police partisan gerrymandering.
I continue to believe that no one should want to be #vicePresident this badly, but just as notably, it’s unsettling to see a congressional "leader" engage in such tactics. We are talking about an episodic campaign in which #EliseStefanik is targeting those who are engaged in administering #justice — not because they’ve done anything wrong, but because they might play a role in holding one of her #partisan allies accountable.
“The absence of a legitimate need for the audio recordings lays bare your likely goal—to chop them up, distort them, & use them for #partisan#political purposes,” the letter from Edward N. Siskel, counsel to the president, read. “Demanding such sensitive & constitutionally-protected #law enforcement materials from the Executive Branch because you want to manipulate them for potential political gain is inappropriate.”
Atesh, a #partisan group in occupied territories, reported that a #Russian division has refused to join the assault on #Kharkiv A soldier from the division said that the Ukrainian border defences were strong and that he had seen Russian #sabotage and reconnaissance missions fail.
As far-right contenders dominate the #GOP ticket in a state known for its flourishing #economy, the business community is bracing for potential fallout
The #NorthCarolina Chamber of #Commerce rebuked “#partisan ideologues that cause #division & create #controversy” in an unusually biting stmnt last month, saying the Mar primary results offer a “startling warning of the looming threats to NC’s #business climate.” Ofcls did not put an amt on projected losses.
…Michael Walden, an #economist at #NC State U, who tracked the damage in 2016 [said], “You lose #jobs. You lose #construction activity. You lose an additional tax base. You lose prestige.”
The accts signal a potential tactical shift in how #China aims to #influence American #politics, w/more of a willingness to target specific candidates & parties, including Biden.
In an echo of #Russia’s #influence campaign, #China appears to be trying to harness #partisan#divisions to undermine the #Biden admin’s policies, despite recent efforts by the 2 countries to lower the temperature in their relations.
Some of the #Chinese accounts impersonate fervent #Trump fans, including one [still allowed] on #X that purported to be “a father, husband & son” who was “#MAGA all the way!!”
#JosephLieberman, the doggedly independent 4-term #US#senator from #Connecticut who was the Democratic nominee for VP in 2000, becoming the first Jewish candidate on the national ticket of a major party, died March 27 in NYC. He was 82.
The cause was complications from a fall, his family said in a statement.
…in #JoeLieberman’s 2012 farewell #Senate speech. “The greatest obstacle I see standing between us & the brighter American future we all want is right here in Washington,” he told colleagues. “It is the #partisan#polarization of our #politics which prevents us from making the principled compromises on which #progress in a #democracy depends.”
[just take a look at the House of Representatives for confirmation. Not that I’d go along w/any of House Republicans inane performative policies.]
"According to preliminary data, about 20 Russian soldiers, two Kamaz trucks, and a UAZ Patriot pickup truck were at the epicenter of the explosions," Ukraine's military intelligence agency wrote on Telegram.
After failing in their first try last week, Republicans pushed through the charges over solid Democratic opposition, making the homeland security secretary the first sitting cabinet member to be impeached.
>> …story become the #censorship… [or] that looks #partisan. Let it all play out.
I let it all play out. I respect your views, but #Biden's original sin was choosing #Garland — to redeem, to rehabilitate, to #appease Republicans, & to appear non-partisan.
None of that worked because appeasement NEVER works.
When half of country still believe 2020 elections were stolen, there's NOTHING Biden could've done to appease them, instill confidence in them, & appear non-partisan.
#msnbc tonight Feb 12 2024 #arimelber had #ericholder on and he concluded that #roberthur at the worst,
(might of?) been hinking about his career and might of "shaded" the report (aka to be #partisan )
Notably, it also extends the #Ukraine#Security Assistance Initiative, the vehicle through which the #Biden admin has helped support Ukraine’s ongoing war w/ Russia, through fiscal 2027. However, the bulk of any future Ukraine #aid — part of Biden’s emergency national security funding request — remains mired in #partisan battles & appears unlikely to pass #Congress this year, if at all.
“This is part of a nat. trend that we’re seeing of predominantly #white often #gerrymandered state legis targeting prosecutors…often #black prosecutors & often prosecutors elected in cities & counties w/larger Black & brown pop. So the #partisan & #racial nature of this retaliation I think is something that’s really important to highlight.” #racism#justice#georgia
#gop want to convince us…our #vote doesn’t matter…it’s useless…Bll$ht!
A gen-Z told me today that his generation has largely accepted that they live in a plutocracy, everything is corrupt, and the Musks, Zuckerbergs, and Trumps are just a fact of existence. They accept it as SOP. It's pretty dark, and exactly what GOP wants them to feel: totally hopeless and disinterested in voting. If they let that despair keep them from voting in 2024, they will learn the hard way just how much more there was and is to lose. We need to change their minds. For their sakes.
@shoq if everything is corrupt the problem isn't the #GOP. The billionaires aren't all the same morally or politically. #Zuckerberg
is probably the most #partisan of the three.
Maybe #HarlanCrow thinks that, by dint of purchasing himself a #SCOTUS justice, he’s effectively President under the Mazars precedent.
Jay Willis:
Harlan Crow's lawyers fired off a pound-sand letter to the Judiciary Committee explaining why investigating Crow's patronge of Clarence Thomas "raises substantial separation of powers concerns," and all due respect to "Michael D. Bopp" but I don't think this is your call dude.
The #SCOTUS ruling is quite enlightening and not as #partisan as I had expected.
Regarding the #GiftGate issue, which are likely to encompass even more #Justices, I have pointed out that the #US's corresponding laws fall short of international benchmarks*:
"An injustice that is so glaring, so lawless, and such a betrayal to the democratic wrote a dissenting judge.
The ruling enables North Carolina Republicans to redraw state and U.S. congressional districts in a self-serving way. This has major national implications because it paves the way for the GOP to expand its narrow U.S. House majority in 2024 and potentially beyond.
