i cannot get over how good this piece of writing by @neauoire is. this is (i think) the first time i've been brought to tears while reading about technology
Random thoughts: There's really the dire need for a platform with the cultural impact of Wikipedia, but for collecting knowledge about creating physical things, and about repairing them.
Today I tried to repair a piece of technology and for the first time I utterly destroyed it while doing so. Not a great feeling 😞 , but damn these Apple watches are delicate… #applewatch#repairability#ifixit
I bought a #Fairphone5 late last year. I went through all sorts of reviews. My favourite was likely #LouisRossmann just going through all the documentation supplied by #Fairphone.
The review which really convinced me was some person going through everything and concluding that you could get a phone with better specs for a lower price. The fact that they couldn't wrap their head around the appeal of #repairability and parts made to last made me buy one.
It's sad when you buy a piece of #hardware (also) because of its #repairability, only to find out later that the manufacturer is super hard to reach and apparently doesn't offer #spare parts. 🫤️ Happened to me with the NS900 Live #headphones from Nocs, where in my case the #earpads disintegrated and the cable on the #proprietary connector broke. 🤔️ But who knows, maybe this will have a happy ending after all as I have contacted them again to ask for spare parts. #positivethinking
So torn with #Fairphone. Really like all that is stands for... which is why I really hate what seems to me like gaslight reasoning for dropping it and then selling bluetooth headphones.
I am also not very confident in overall device security, compared to the usual options (Samsung, Google, Apple).
> Here, we compare the iFixit Repairability Score with the French Repairability Index to shed light on their commonalities and differences, and reflect on what each scoring method signifies and its potential best use. We’ll take a look at the goals, scope, criteria, and methodology for each of the systems.
Didn’t seem like any big surprises at Apple's event today. Honestly, my biggest takeaway is that it was the worst presentation Apple has done in a long time. Yet another "you will die in a car crash without our products” segment, coupled with a whole lot of greenwashing.
Anyway, I’ll be pre-ordering the base iPhone 15 because I want USB-C and the screen on my SE is now too small for most apps and websites. I will miss small phones. #AppleEvent
It's purposefully designed to make #repair economically unviable!
This shit should be made illegal by @EU_Commission because not even ATEX-certified radios and diving computers have that level of designed-in #unrepairability, and they even have fecking valid reasons to not be easy to be opened.
Because anything else will affirm said manufacturers that are #AntiRepair that you are okay with them denying you this essential #ConsumerRight to #DIY and #fix products you bought...
@Hawkwinter#Repairability even helps those that can't #DIY, as parts are cheap and even if technicians that fix it were way more expensive, they'd need far less time to turnover repairs and would have easy access to parts if not have them in stock!
For example, some cars until @EU_Commission mandated toolfree-swappable bulbs on newer models literally required uninstalling basically the entire front bodykit and sometimes even the radiator just to swap a faulty light bulb.
Is anybody else deeply suspicious of the big tech companies like Tesla and Apple suddenly deciding that they're in favour of Right To Repair laws (that they've been bitterly fighting for years)? Maybe it's just surrender, but I worry that there's deviousness at work, like they've spotted a loophole.
The #fairphone 5 is what all new phones should offer - a 5 year warranty, guaranteed software support until at least 2031, totally modular and repairable. The only reason not to get one is that I have just repaired my Fairphone 3 myself with a bit of help from their support team (screwdriver and everything - go me!) so hopefully won't need one yet. 4 years old and still going strong! All phones should be made to last and made repairable. #repairability#durability#sustainability#fairtrade
Fairphone 5 sets a new standard with 8-10 years of Android support and a 5-year warranty
Fairphone is not trying to compete on bleeding edge specifications. It can be more likened to a mid-range phone, with long support, ethically sourced components, and easily repairable (screwed not glued) modules. For example, you could swap out the main 50MP ...continues
Also related is that genz is getting older than 25, their parents insurance won’t cover them anymore and the minimum wage is still not livable. But sure, spin it however you want.
@codekoan Also people demand #Repairable devices not only because they like #repairability and hate avoidable #eWaste but most people in the #USA can't even afford a surprise $400 expense.
So it makes total sense to choose something cheaper that if it breaks can be repaired cost-effectively - like a @Fairphone ...
