A while ago, a fellow translator here was looking for other translators to follow. It’s been 5 months since her post, so I thought I’d ask the same thing: translators, where are you? Boost if you know any translators or professionals working in the translation industry. I’d love to meet fellow translators here so we can get discuss our routines, our joys, CPD, and everything in between.
https://jointhefediverse.net is now available "po slovensky"! More languages are coming. Huge thanks to everyone who reached out and offered to provide translation!
Saw another list of "untranslatables" with the usual suspects (schadenfreude, hygge…). Couple of things:
—Funny how lists of untranslatable words always supply translations. The words usually just don't have precise, one-word translations—esp if they're culturally very specific
—Except sometimes they do. Schadenfreude has a little-known English equivalent, epicaricacy, borrowed from Greek & listed in some English dictionaries since the mid-18C
I am working on Russian translation of Kbin right now and I noticeed that many of Kbin terminology just sounds.. Like a bad translation (Maybe from Polish it was originally written on?..), and I am sure many of you can agree with me...
Between Twitter and Reddit imploding, and Meta soon launching their fediverse-compatible Project 92/Barcelona/Threads, there's a great need to make https://jointhefediverse.net available in more languages.
Would you join me and the rest of the volunteers and help out?
I’ve finally admitted defeat with the #transcription and #translation project I’m working on. this is the first time in nearly 20 years of doing this that I have reached this point. In short, it’s not worth continuing.
One of the things I love about #NodeCore is that, despite being conceptually in the #Infiniminer / #Minecraft genre, it has a very original and quirky take on it. This also reflects on a number of details down to the level of semantics —and that's where my love turns into hate when I want to translate it.
#Ebooks are available from the Blaft website, from Smashwords, or from the muchtoolarge retailers. Can we interest you in a #Tamil supernatural #thriller in English #translation? #Mythology from the state of #Mizoram on India's border with Myanmar? Bonkers slipstream short fiction from Kuzhali Manickavel? An encyclopedia of #ghosts and #cryptids?
Sadly, two of my Minetest contributions died recently. They would have added 2 helper scripts to update and syntax-check the #translation files for mods. This code was used successfully in production for a long time but still was rejected because it is not "on the roadmap". 😠
Apparently quality assurance is not a priority in #Minetest development. 🤪
Hold the British Museum accountable for copyright and moral rights infringement and the erasure of feminist poet Qiu Jin!
Recently, I discovered that the British Museum's "China's Hidden Century" exhibit used my published translations of Chinese feminist poet Qiu Jin's poetry without contacting me, and thus without any permission, credit, or payment.
Please donate to hold the British Museum accountable for the erasure of Chinese feminist poet Qiu Jin -
Today I want to talk about the importance of poetry in a Chinese cultural context and why this makes the removal of Qiu Jin's poetry especially problematic. Please share!
If you want to know what a future which uses Large Language Models extensively looks like, talk to a translator who uses a machine translation tool like Trados.
Everyone knows that the Reformation spurred a lot of translations of religious writings. I did not know that this included translations from High German to Low German. Luther wrote in High and was barely comprehensible to people in Northern Germany in his original form.
Jenny Erpenbeck opens #Spring 2024 with Sloughing Off One Skin, a haunting #ShortStory that explores truth and identity, translated by Michael Hofmann.
Update on the #NodeCore#translation situation. I've decided to take the plunge and get “creative” for Italian, fishing from ancient Greek for the names I was having troubles with. One of the problem is that some of the names actually exist in Italian, although with slightly different meanings.
Here's the situation as of now, with comments. The translations are still open for debate, so if anyone has comments or suggestions, I'm open.
OC Many of Kbin terms dont make sense.. Why not replace them?
I am working on Russian translation of Kbin right now and I noticeed that many of Kbin terminology just sounds.. Like a bad translation (Maybe from Polish it was originally written on?..), and I am sure many of you can agree with me...
